I Have a windows 7 PC with AVG Internet security. Since one week always when i start windows it falls into a scan by watchDog and cannot be stopped. ITh scan goes over more than 4 hoursand doesn't end. I cannnot use windows. What to do?

There is no messagebox. I am having the same problem as Hans described above. I have used AVG (Free) for many years on all my Computers with no problems, including running on two Windows 10 systems for the last few months. Yesterday AVG did an update on one system and asked to reboot Windows. When I did, I got the AVG 'Watchdog' messages as described by Hans above & Windows hangs up without loading. AVG has now done it's update on this Windows 10 system and wants to reboot, but I think that might be a very bad idea! Suggestions please on how to recover the other one.

Downloaded AVG_Remover.exe and copied onto CD. Manged to get the Laptop to run up a Command prompt. Attempt to run AVG_Remover gives an error 'The subsystem needed to support the image type is not present'. Is this a self-extracting zip?

Apparently, Windows will not run 32bit code without enabling the feature using DISM /online. But the Command prompt runs as windows PE which doesn't support the /online option. Don't forget that Windows 10 cannot load while this problem exists. Getting increasingly worried about whether this Computer (also Windows 10) will survive a reboot! Going to try and uninstall AVG on here for now.

I tried copying the AVG Remover tool onto the Hard Drive, but Windows 10 will only allow 32 bit code to run if it has been 'enabled' by DISM - which it cannot do under the 'Emergency' Command Prompt. I found another AVG Support note which suggested renaming files in C:\Windows\System32\Drivers called avgXXXX.sys as avgXXXX.old. That wasn't successful either, don't get the AVG messages now, but Windows fails to laod up.
I'm experiencign the same problem as Hans and Graham (also using Windows 10 and AVG Antivirus Free). I tried using AVG Rescue CD via USB drive but, when i click on the "removable drive" link, the computer simply restarts. After that I did the same as Graham (command prompt and all) and ended with the same message.
In the end I think I'll have to format my HDD but, on a positive note, I found a way to save the files that had no backup. Using the command prompt, you can open the notepad. After that you go to file>open and than you can just copy any file stored into your computer to some USB drive or external HD connected to your computer. (If you can't see your files, just change the type of file box to all files or something like that.)
Is it a bodge? Yes. But saved all the work I did during the past 2 weeks.
Still I'll keep following this thread to see if anyone finds a better solution.
I just had this happen to my main desktop unit today (9.21 pm EST), more than 8 hrs of work lost. Are you saying I'm going to have to reinstall the rest of the stuff? I certainly am removing AVG from all my other devices, you guys don't seem to even UNDERSTAND the kind of pain in the ass this is.

I have the same problem. My screen is frozen. On boot up, I get a command line string going from Phase 0: Starting Watch Dog Initialization to Phase I:Finished. Then it just hangs there fronzen. After 30 min I hard restarted my HP laptop Windows 10. The machine would perform the same action. I can't Shift-F8, F8 or any other function to get it to Safe Mode. How long will I be frozen? Will I have to find a way to get the data off and wipe out my Hard Drive? Are there any other tools? Please help!
I'm facing similar issue. My screen was frozen upon phase 1: finished. I entered safe mode to download AVG remover and run it. Seems successful and a window pop out to reboot my computer. After rebooting, my computer never did enter back into its windows 10 OS again. 4 hours of downtime so far. Please help!

Computer finally responded. Went in to check if all the AVG components are there and was happy for a moment that it is gone. Nonetheless I notice my computer was running a lot slower than usual. Brought it to my friend who works as an IT support. Failed to reset the computer twice only to find out windows 10 was corrupted beyond repair. Had no choice but to reformat the whole computer. Although supposingly successful, my friend feedback that the motherboard is behaving strangely and the temperature of my laptop is unusually high. Till now, I'm still having problems even to going into the OS!
After AVG update couple days ago, watch dog inititialization shows up and freezs after phase 1: fnished. Tried to load from AVG rescue CD (USB), but it goes back starting watch dog again and freezes. My PC ihas windoes 10 and 64 bits. Please help. I can not use my PC last 5 days. I have many files have not been backed up.

I started again and downloaded it. This time I got the message 'reboot is enabled' on the usb or something to tha effect but when i plug my usb into my computer it makes zero difference, I still end up on watchdog initilization page. I gave up and tried to reset my computer but even that has made no difference! I'm at my wits end! I have tried everything but whatever I do it comes back to your damn watchdog intilization thing.
I tried opening the file from the usb in command prompt and i copied the files to my destop and tried to open them again using the command prompt, all resulted in the message 'the subsystem needed to support the image type is not present'.

Press the SPACE key repeatedly during the computer bootup to make sure you skip the disk check. 3.Download the following tool: http://www.avg.com/filedir/util/CheckDisk_mod.exe 4.Run the downloaded tool, and then click Continue. 5.Message Work done will be shown shortly. I don't think you understand. There is nothing I can do, no button I can press repeatedly, that allows me to skip the watchdog initialization thing. I'm going to now go and PAY for someone to fix what your software has ruined. Thanks AVG!

I created Rescue USB and set BIOS to boot from usb, but it does not load rescue tool and starts watch dog initialization all over again and freezes after "2016-08-29 19:23:29.553 Phase 1: finished" message. Your software has BRICKED alot of people computers. BRICKED meaning can not be used.
AVG Rescue cant be run as AVG Watchdog wont allow it. I cant boot to safe mode or boot to CD.
I work in IT and ive had alot of people call me about this issue. Im having a hard time getting past the black AVG Watchdog screen.
Ive changed Boot options on BIOS to boot from CD and ive created a AVG Rescue CD. Still just runs AVG Watchdog & nothing works.
The only outcome i see at this point is alot of people having to pay to have there computers whiped clean and start fresh.
THIS wont be easy, as you need to boot from disk or usb to restore Operating System and AVG doesnt seem to let the pc do anything but run watchdog.
For alot of people this is going to be hell. And all AVG can say it USE WINDOWS DISK? So what about the people with no restore points in windows?
Also most laptops and computers these days dont come with Windows Disks anymore.
So basically for everyone that doesnt understand AVGs responses, they are saying you need to have your computer totally whiped clean.
This includes removing the hdd to possibly save files / photos. Then formatting disk and then hopefullly with your fingers corossed when you re-install the formatted drive you will be able to re-install windows.

Hello, I've been having the exact same problems as everyone else here, but I managed to bypass the Watchdog and access the AVG Rescue CD. While the computer is closed, hold down the f2 button, then press the power button. Don't let go of f2 until a bunch of options pop up, then click on Troubleshoot>Advanced Options>UEFI Settings. Now the BIOS will pop up, and under the Boot options, change UEFI to Legacy BIOS, then save your settings.
Just reboot your computer, and AVG Rescue CD should open!

Caelan - The F2 screen is the first thing I have been able to do, so thank you! However, I do not see 'troubleshoot' or anything with 'UEFI.' There is a Boot menu at the top, but with none of the options you listed. In the System Configuration menu under the Advanced tab, I found "Boot Mode ... [UEFI Boot]" but it is black and I am not able to select it.... Can you provide any further wisdom?

Karthikeyan, As you may not understand (which I find surprising considering the above commentary) but Microsoft offers a reinstall option, BUT that doesn't do ANYTHING. Caelan, I did as you suggested and like Gwen did not get the same screen. I am now doing the system check.
Gwen and Rocco, the AVG Rescue CD successfully deleted AVG Watchdog from my system, but had the unfortunate side-effect of corrupting Windows at the same time. However, thanks to the Windows Media Creation Tool, which I downloaded and installed onto a USB, I was able to open cmd, and Notepad, where I was able to back up my hard drive and reinstall Windows from scratch.
Whatever the case, what I did was open the UEFI Firmware settings which replaces the traditional BIOS from earlier Windows versions, then change the settings to boot up with BIOS like the older versions because AVG Rescue CD is probably not compatible with newer UEFI Boot (I'm just taking a calculated guess here, though I may be wrong). Another possible way to open it up and follow the steps I mentioned is to quickly open and close your computer two or three times, before any message pops up, by holding the power button down. Twas a shame, AVG lost a customer. I was lucky enough to already have a second computer, a USB, and a backup drive at my disposal, which helped immensely for the next part of recovering my computer.
If you're okay with reinstalling Windows, I'll post again giving step-by-step instructions of what I did. I couldn't come up with any other solution because of the corruption.
I have since 3 hours the same problem. My two Windows 10-sytems dont started. Only I see the Blacksceen with AVG Watchdog! The Pc`s doesn`t starting, even not with CD! A very hard crash I had never been before! Bad AVG!
I am experiencing similar problems on a new insatll of Windows 7, HP, x86. All works well until the latest version of AVG_Antivirus_Free 2016.101.7752 x86_694 is installed. After AVG is installed on boot up, Windows Explorer can NOT acess most files, Windows hangs, Wireless Icon locks at a Blue Circle. I try to activate services.msc. This can take 5~10 min and I find that AVG Watchdog is is stalled at 'Starting". It can NOT be started manually, "Access Denied". Tried AVG Repair no solution. Started in Safe mode to disable AVG on startup but AVG insists on starting. The only thing that restores the machine is a uninstall of AVG free and use of AVG Remover. You must use AVG Remover at least twice. Even after this Registry Checker still find residual AVG entries and in appropriate Windows Firewall settings related to AVG. I have now gone through THREE clean installs of Windows 7 and AVG Free with same results. AVG has now been removed from this laptop and I will NOT be installing AVG on anymore computers.

I assume it will just load the current AVG_Antivirus_Free_694 which I have already wasted a considerable amount of time installing, removing and cleaning up the damage created. I will be doing no more AVG installs until there is some indication that AVG has adressed this widespread problem.

Method : I suggest you to download an ISO image file of Windows 10 and you can try running a Startup Repair from the OS disc.Startup Repair is a Windows recovery tool that can fix certain system problems that might prevent Windows from starting. 1. Boot from the Windows 10 disc. 2. Once selecting your language, time and keyboard settings, click Next to load the next window, then click on the Repair your computer link on the bottom left corner of the window. 3. You should then be presented with a Choose an Option screen, with Troubleshoot as an option to select.
4. In the Troubleshoot screen, select Advanced options. 5. Select Startup Repair from the Advanced options screen and then select the target operating system to repair, which would be Windows 10 in this case. All I've got to say is that this is a bunch of BULL CRAP! I pay good money for something to protect my computer and it destroys my computer and upsets my way of life! I'm not as computer savvy as most on this site so I don't know and understand most of this stuff. All I know is all this watchdog stuff keeps my computer from doing ANYTHING! Thought I was doing right by PAYING for an anti-virus, boy was I wrong! AVG, you are ruining people's lives here! Shame on you!

You have confirmed that I am using the latest version of AVG_Antivirus_Free 2016.101.7752 x86_694. There is no point in trying a reinstall, I have done three of them already with a clean install of Windows 7. You suggestion with the Microsoft link to a Windows 10 problem is some what hopeless and a waste of time. This thread is about a Windows 7 problem with the AVG Watchdog not starting. Since AVG has not fixed their problem . I will stay with my current solution and uninstall AVG free from my computers and those of my clients. It is not easy to remove AVG. After the normal uninstall form the control panel you MUST use the AVG Revover at least twice. Each time you use the AVG Remover it will shutdown and restart up your computer a number of times. On completion of that there are still many AVG related entries in the registry and you need to use a Registry Cleaner to get it all cleaned out. I have moved on to another anti-virus programs.

Gwen- From what I understand, you may not be able to change your computer setting into Legacy BIOS..
However, I'll let you know what I did anyways. Before you start, you will need a backup drive, and a USB or CD with a Windows Installation Program of whichever Windows version you have. 1) Hold down f2 to go into the UEFI Menu. 2)Click on Troubleshoot>Advanced Options>UEFI Firmware Settings, and click on the "Restart", after you plug in the USB or the CD with the Windows 10 installation program. 3)Follow Balsubramanian's instructions, but instead of the Startup Repair, start cmd Boot. 4)Plug your backup drive into the computer, and type in "notepad" (without the " symbols) 5)Back up your hard drive by following the steps on this link: http://www.ampercent.com/backup-files-folders-windows-boot-failure/9325/ 6)Start a fresh install of your Windows version, by clearing out your hard drive completely, with the USB or CD, instead of just repairing it, which may cause issues or not fix yours.
Your problem should be fixed! Take note that, depending on how many files is on your hard drive, it may take up to a few hours for the files to copy from one hard drive to your backup hard drive. During this period, it may say that Notepad is "Not Responding". However, it is in the middle of copying the files, and will function again once the files are all copied! Also take note that, once in a while, an error message may pop up with options to "Retry", "Skip", or "Cancel". Always choose "Skip"!
So, I have the same fucking problem for the last 5 days. But I managed to fix it. Tried a lot of things. Nothing works. And the most annoying thing is that Safe Mode isn't working/not available. But suddenly I found a way to get into Safe Mode. * When Watch Dog initialization finished, hold down SHIFT button and hold powerbutton for shutting down the PC. * KEEP HOLDING THE SHIFT-button and reboot again * Windows 10 should automatically start in the recovery environment with a message similar to ‘Recovery. It looks like Windows didn't load correctly'. * Choose for "See advanced repair options" * In the next menu click on "Advanced options" * Click on "Startup settings" -> It will ask to restart and will enable/change some Windows settings * Choose the option "Start up in Safe Mode" (press F5), it will reboot in Safe Mode * When trying to uninstall AVG in the Settings app it gave me a error. * Downloaded the tool "AVG remover" and it succesfully removed AVG. * Reboot and Windows works again. No more AVG for me...

I have been plagued with this issue all week and had reached out to AVG and Microsoft - they blame each other for the issue - Microsoft says AVG blocked the update and AVG just blames Microsoft for the update. I was also left completely unable to connect to the internet so any issues relating to connectivity were not an option for me. I was able to boot in safe mode on some days and other days I was able to boot NOT in safe mode (sorry, I'm not a 'computer' person). I resolved this issue by going to the latest windows update in add/remove programs and uninstalling the one that was updated on the day this issue started. I simply restarted my computer once it was uninstalled and it performed updates while rebooting and everything has been restored - thank God! Hope this helps someone!

Contributor R C has the solution, thanks mate. An alternative way to get into safe mode is to keep powering off while the computer is re-booting, after the 3rd time Windows 10 knows something is up and offers the dialogue that gets you to safe mode and then you can remove AVG completely. After the constant pop-ups, (and I have the Pro, purchased, version) this Watchdog fiasco is the last straw. You won't get your money back, no surprise there, but remember you have signed their “Continuing Protection Service” which means if you don't cancel they take your money automatically. Check this (http://www.avg.com/gb-en/how-to-cancel-avg-subscription) It is a shame as I've used AVG for many years but they have become increasingly aggressive, and greedy, in their prompts to buy more features from them, and then this happens, as R C said 'No more AVG for me...'

After spending more than 8 hours trying different things, I was finally able to get the AVG Remover and use it in Safe Mode (same saga as many above, but finally figured out how to get to it in Windows 10). The AVG Remover says it has removed everything but I am still not able to reboot normally. I can only get in through Safe Mode. Otherwise, it just keeps spinning the little ferris wheel on a black screen...
It is very disappointing that AVG has done something that completely trashes computers now. And your recommendations are all well and good if a person has more than one computer, but those whose main box gets "bricked" won't find any comfort in your "sorry that AVG product did not meet your expectations."
I hope you figure out how to get rid of this stupid Watch Dog thing: it is a travesty!

Thank you so much, RC & Shy Tot! After following your advice, I was able to get into Safe Mode and download and run the AVG removal tool. I then reverted to the previous version of Windows, downloaded the latest updates, ran the Windows Update repair tool and then ran the installation again. I have to say that the inane responses from AVG "support" on this thread, indicate a total lack of any customer service ethos. I feel so sorry for those people who installed this tool, thinking they were protecting their computers and who do not have the technical ability to untangle this mess. I note that this problem has been flagged as "Solved". When a vendor is happy to promote the removal of their product as the "solution" to a major problem, it really tells you everything you need to know.

After "successfully" removing AVG Free, I am now no longer able to boot even into Safe Mode. I get an error screen telling me that Windows cannot start because it is missing a critical file: avgboota.sys
Why is an avg* file critical when I have removed the program?
Is there anyway to get it onto my "dead" laptop? (I have the file from my desktop; if I get the laptop up and running I will definitely by removing AVG from it!) The only thing I can do is boot into System Recovery. This does not allow me to "recover" though because I am missing AVGBOOTA.SYS...

You are seriously suggesting I go through a 9 step process to disable AVG and an 11 step process to build a rescue USB including changing BIOS options and manually deleting files.
Are you serious? I'm confident with PCs, but you are making software for consumers.
Why should any end user not confident with computers ever buy anything from you ever again? Most people will be without a working computer or will have to pay to get their computer fixed because your programmers write faulty software.
You are making a complete disaster of fixing this.
1. This question is not "answered". Please unmark it as answered and leave it as unanswered until the problem is fixed.
2. We need a software solution, when's it coming? People have bricked PCs and cannot wait indefinitely.
3. We need a clear interim solution. This thread has a number of solutions. Which one are you suggesting we do now?
In the meantime, I have fixed the issue as follows
1. Keep restarting PC and pressing F11. With enough attempts, it does seem to finally boot. Wait about 30 seconds once the Watchdog black screen appears and if nothing seems to be happening then force reboot with the power button. No need for "rescue CDs" which is difficult as I don't have a built in or external CD player and no need for downloads which is also a bit difficult without a working laptop.
2. When booted, use the AVG removal tool. Remove AVG.

Another dissatisfied customer here. I too killed the avg*.sys files as per "https://support.avg.com/SupportArticleView?l=en_US&urlName=Disabling-AVG-when-Windows-cannot-start" and am now locked in a boot cycle where the system is looking for the avgboota.sys file. I'm entirely unimpressed with the support I'm seeing. This is a known issue for *months* and you still haven't fixed the initial problem. I have always had high regard for AVG but this is truly sad.
I have tried every suggestion here and still cannot boot up normally on Windows 10 Lenovo laptop. I have removed AVG free using AVG remover twice, reinstalled AVG and removed again using windows uninstall and can only boot up in safe mode by turning laptop on and off three times in a row, F8 doesn't work or any other key for that matter. Have also backed out the latest windows update, still no luck. I don't want to wipe out my laptop, is there a fix yet for this problem?
I could not get the USB or DVD drive to boot. That may be an issue with this machine or it may be something to do with the issue. I tried an external DVD as well, without success.
Then I tried using F8 to go into safe mode but in Win 10 it defaults to ignore that. I went online and found out how to change that to a legacy configuration. That allowed me to get to F8. Safe mode didn't work but I noticed at the bottom of the list there are some new options (at least since I last needed F8) and one of them is Disable Early Launch Anti-Malware Driver. I used that to get the computer back and then was able to get to a running system. Then I was able to remove AVG.
During the troubleshooting, I also went in to the Windows\System32\Drivers and renamed all the avg*.sys to avg*.old. That changed my ability to get to the Advanced items because it kept failing with a missing avgboota.sys file. I'm not sure how this affected my final solution.

Please select the AVG products which are shown in the remover tool window and then start removal process. 2. After the remover tool process is successfully finished, restart your computer. 3. After the restart please enter into the normal mode and manually delete the AVG Remover folder in the C drive of My computer.
4. Once uninstalled download the installation file using the link : http://www.avg.com/download to reinstall your AVG program. 5. Run the downloaded file to start the installation process. 6. Follow the instructions on your screen. 7. Complete the installation and restart your computer.
I have also tried the restart with Disable Early Launch Anti-Malware Driver but all it does is give me the blank screen with the white circle spinning and never restarts. I have tried a clean boot in Windows 10, same result, nothing but white circle spinning. Any solutions from AVG would be much appreciated, it has been three days and I haven't made any progress at all.
This is such a joke. I've wasted my entire saturday on this. Don't bother calling tech support, they are just as useless as the posts on here. I have followed the instructions of other posters, and entered safe mode and ran avg remover (3 times). Now all I get upon booting up is a white spinning circle on a black screen.
Since I didn't get a response from AVG I searched 'black screen on windows 10 issue' and found several suggestions: 1) remove logitech mouse dongle before rebooting. 2) if you have a touchscreen swipe left when you boot up and see the black screen with the white dots circling endlessly. I did both of these things together, and after swiping left and clicking the mousepad I was able to see the mouse pointer and amazingly enough a normal bootup. As soon as I got into my account the AVG remover screen popped up and said it was working and required a reboot when done. I have rebooted and again had to swipe left, but at least I can get into my laptop with full functionality. I checked my windows updates and saw that they had failed several days in a row, so instead of trying to update again I disabled automatic windows updates to give me some time to figure out what caused the problem in the first place. There are lots of other possibilities to try in this article, so I hope it will help someone else who is stuck. It's been six days of trial and error to get to this point, and what I have learned is that this problem is not just with AVG and third party virus checkers, but with the actual windows 10 anniversary update itself.
@ Carol Baird: You are awesome! I went from nearly crying (thinking about all the photos I hadn't backed up in the last 5 years) to overjoyed after your advide worked. Taking out the logitech mouse dongle did it for me. It booted up normally and then I quickly uninstalled AVG. I was a little worried to complete the uninstall because it wanted to restart the computer, but I did it and it booted back up normally. I turned the computer on and off again for good measure and it seems to be working fine now. Thanks, Carol. I'd give you a hug if I could.
The problem here is A bad windows 10 build update. To resolve this, as the machine is booting past the post screen hold shift and keep tapping f8. Once inside the eufi menu all you have to do is navigate to restore computer to previous windows build and accept all the prompts and let it do its thing. Bam problem solved. It's a shame a company doesn't even know how to resolve a problem with their own software, and a random IT guy here with no certifications was able o figure this out in five minutes as I had the same problem. Avg you guys suck at customer support stop telling people to wipe and reload their machines and make ISO boot images to fix the problem. It's actually you and microsofts fault. Their fault for constantly creatin bad windows 10 build upgrades. And avg fault for not properly troubleshooting the issue locally in their offices. If this is the companies idea of technical support you guys need major reform!!!
I've tried the AVG removal tool, holding the shift key while booting, hitting F8 and the windows 10 image. Nothing will work. It just keeps loading Watchdog and then locking up. I'm at my wits end. I didn't have to do anything for it to get screwed up so why is it so damn difficult to fix?????Also tried the shift+F8. No luck:-(
To get my laptop to boot up I had to turn it off with the power button three times: Turn it off, turn it back on and immediately turn it off again, turn it back on and again turn it off, the third time it should come up with the message that computer has a problem and it is in recovery mode, then you can boot it into safe mode. Look at the post from R.C. above to see what the screens look like and how to boot into safe mode.
I had the same issue as all those above. After several hours of trying everything, what finally worked is to restart the computer (you need to wait till after the bios loads) during the early startup three times. The computer will enter options and follow the instuctions that R C provide above, entering safe mode. I then used the AVG removal tool to remove it. Computer was then able to boot up regularly. Also refer to Carol Baird post above, this is what I did and it worked.
I tried all of the steps above; and after many hours of trial and error this is what worked for me- I used the steps Carol Baird and R.C. described to get into safe mode (restart 3x quickly enables recovery options). In safemode I uninstalled AVG.. however I could not remove AVG tuneup.. even with the AVG removal tool. I made sure to disable it from start up option...(alt,ctrl,delete) select Task Manager- Startup and disabled everything that said AVG at startup.. I restarted my laptop (3x) went back into Recovery Mode.. Advanced Options.. System Restore- I went through the system restore process and was fortunate enough to find a restore point that was before my last windows update.. my laptop was restored to about a week ago and working fine, however AVG was back on my machine. It took me many hours to get to this point and I understand that the watchdog problem is an incompatibility between a windows update and an AVG update- so I promptly uninstalled anything and everything that said AVG.. I'm not a computer tech or anything, but I've owned/ used computers since Windows 98 and I never had to deal with legitimate software that put any of my computers out of commission like this... AVG will not be reinstalled on anything I own. I hope this helps others.. (FYI I have an hp running Windows 10)
For anyone else having this issue!!!!! The man half way through this forum named "R C" is the correct way to get this horseshit off your computer! Karma will bite AVG in the ass for destroying our computers! Dont forget once you get into safe mode that you have a CD BURNED from another computer. That tool that will be burned on the CD is called (AVG REMOVE TOOL) Once you slide that in when your in safe mode. It will pop up click remove and bye bye :)
Darryl Brashier post appears I have same issue. Could you provide us some more details how you change to legacy configuration to enter Safe mode/ viewing new option using F8?
My fairly new All-In-One desktop has been bricked since August (my original post). I created AVG rescue DVD/USB and Windows 10 installation media DVD, but problem was that my pc would not start up from external media after I changed BIOS boot sequence and go straight to annoying watch dog loading black screen. It might be something to do with changing back to LEGACY BIOS as one of post. It sounds like several people were able to load into safe mode using physically restarting windwos 3 times using power buttons. Hopefully I can access my hard drive to back up picture and personal files before trying to fix. Carol, Colin and Darryl's posts have been most helpful. AVG, please figure this out before you loose more customers.
not sure if this will help anyone , i had the same issue yesterday the pc had updated windows during the night and it wouldnt start and was just showing the avg watchdog black screen and couldnt do anything with it , after searching the internet had a plan when i got back from work on what to try and resolve this issue and while waiting for my partners laptop to power on remembered that carol baird had mentioned something about removing the logitech mouse usb dongle so thought worth a go , didnt turn pc off before doing it just pulled it out and in a split second it went from the black screen to a blue screen saying windows is updating it went through the update process restarted and has worked fine ever since , have tried restarting it a few times and has worked fine
SUCCESS I have had one Win10 pc stuck with the windows update for nearly a week. I was too busy to do much about it. Then another similar pc that seemed to have accepted the win10 anniversary update got stuck at startup with this AVG watchdog business. I have AVG for business on both. Despite the frustrations of those above, I don't think this is to do with AVG, and more to do with Microsoft. I am very greatful to Carol Baird for the tip about the Logitech dongle for keyboard and mouse. With both computers, removing this, restarting the pcs and letting them restart/ continue windows10 update process has led to success. Like Dr Hell, I've done a couple of restarts and all seems well. Fingers crossed...
Many thanks to Carol Baird and Dr Hell. The logitech mouse dongle trick did it for me. I had to do it a couple of times because I lost my cursor and couldn't get to the control panel The third time did the trick so I could reset my computor to an earlier build and remove the AVG.
Thanks to the post from RC up above, I was able to get my laptop up and running. Even with AVG Remover I can't get stupid AVG Web Tuneup off though. I lost two business days of work. Two. I run my own business from my laptop--to lose TWO days is a HUGE loss for me at this stage of my career. I called AVG support and was on the phone for a half hour of failed attempt after failed attempt.
What upsets me the most, though, is that people have been having this issues for months. Months, AVG people. You knew about this issue, clearly, as you attempted to respond to each post here and even said the issue had been sent to a higher up team. So why was I asked to update a few days ago if you knew people were having conflicts months ago? And for that reason, I'm out. Researching other companies and putting my money elsewhere.
Trying RC's advise above unfortunately did not work to get me into safe mode. Still brings me into the Phase 0 / Phase 1 screen. So far I'm stuck and nothing seems to be able to get me to safe more so I can run the AVG Remover? What can I do to fix this?

After much research I think I have found the answer to everyone's problem and how to fix it. This issue is something with the new Windows 10 Anniversary Update and AVG (I have had the same problem with AVG Cloudcare and AVG Free). The best way to go is remove AVG and use something else. Booting to Safe Mode You will have to get your computer to boot to the preboot menu for Windows 10. To do this I had to physically turn the computer off 3 times when it showed the windows 10 logo. The third time it should say something like "Preparing to Run Automatic Repair". Once it is done with trying to repair it will fail and give you the option to restart or advanced repair. Click advanced repair then troubleshoot then advanced options then startup settings. It should give you the option to reboot the computer. Go ahead and reboot and let it get to the boot menu screen (times like this I miss the old f8 on boot that they had). Once the menu comes up select Safe Mode with Networking. Remove AVG Once it boots into safe mode run the AVG Remover (I tried to run the uninstaller but it just gave me an error the remover seemed to work so just use that). This will uninstall AVG from the computer. Seeing as they haven't figured out how to fix this since the update this is the ONLY way I can confirm that it works and will stay working.
One more note, the first time it goes into repair mode, it does a total scan of the hard drive. I went to bed at that point. When I came back, the dreaded black screen with the internet watchdog was there. BUT . . . stopping it at the windows logo a few more times, put it back into repair, and it skipped the drive scan the second time.
Also, Microsoft, it would be wonderful if the repair disk had the option to do a safe start with networking! I ran that bleeping thing 10 times, and could not restore anything. That option would have been GREAT. Thanks, all – have a great day.

I have tried the AVG remover tool from a USB, twice. When I restart each time I have to reboot x3 in order to have safe mode...going through all the menu, etc. Now, I get the black screen with the circling dots and end up with a slightly different watch dog initialization Phase 0 and Phase 3, which takes even longer to materialize on the black screen! I have not tried the rescue disk as some other posts describe Windows as corrupted and losing everything...I have alread lost 7-1/2 hours of time, cannot risk losing my files, data, etc. As per AVG Technologies posters: Aug. 12 "escalated to senior team;" Sept. 4 "techs going to update;" Sept. 10 "contact Microsoft support and they will fix this issue for you;" Sept. 18 (and this is a beauty!): "happy that the issue is resolved..." It is not resolved. Almost two months and there is no definitive solution, step-by-step, posted by a Senior Team

Using the methods described in this support thread I have managed to uninstall my AVG products to mitigate the watchdog issue. I have paid for AVG Internet Security and AVG TuneUp and neither can be installed without causing this watchdog issue (I have confimed by uninstalling and reinstalling both seperately). The AVG uninstaller also render Windows Defender useless as Windows Defender cannot be enabled as it still thinks AVG is installed. I now have Avast free installed to cover me while I am without AVG but would like an answer on when this issue will be corrected as my AVG subscriptions are still being depleted even though I cannot use the software. Thanks.

Just for your info please note that with the introduction of Win 8 Windows Defender was re-classified as an AntiVirus prog which could conflict with AVG so it's disabled when AVG is installed. [Windows Defender is a software product that attempts to detect and remove malware. It was first released as a free antispyware program download for Windows XP, shipped with Windows Vista and Windows 7 and made into a full antivirus program replacing Microsoft Security Essentials as part of Windows 8 and later versions]. I am using Windows 10. Understood regarding the Windows Defender but it appears that the AVG removal tool does not fully uninstall AVG and so Windows Defender cannot be enabled as it thinks AVG is still there. I guess installing Avast brute forced it somehow and it was able to install. If I now uninstall AVAST will it clear whatever setting out it needs to and I can enable Windows Defender ?

I just wanted to let you know how frustrated I am. My company paid a high price to get 3 years of service from you. An enterprise level of assistance should of been provided. We've had problems before but nothing like this. Over the past 2 months, I have encountered so many problems which I believed were to be from microsoft windows 10. They were not, they were from AVG's watchdog / reactor software that controls the boot startup of windows. I'm not entirely blaming AVG, it should of been better tested at microsoft as well. However you have tainted your name at my company. I will be uninstalling all 50 licenses you provide, and be going with some other software. If this issue was this big, the littlest you could have done was notify your enterprise users explaining to them. Not once have I seen an email or anything. I will not be reccomending AVG to anyone, this is still causing at least 20 computers a day in our company to seize on boot up. After uninstallation of AVG, the problem is resolved, and the updates go fine.
You have a lot of work to do to rectify yourselves. I can't believe you have let this issue go for this long.

Well, Thanks to Carl S. I was able to get my computer back and uninstall AVG and restarted my computer multiple times no problem. I then Installed Panda Security and then restarted my computer..... oh boy.... now I am in a Black Screen with a perpectual spinning circle dots for 25 min now... I am running Windows 10 with the F'd Up Update. What do I do now?
Well I have Carol Baird to thank as she has succeeded where these other muppets just keep saying We apologize for the inconvenience. As soon as I removed the Logitech dongle it booted up fine and now removed AVG. AVGs response to this is issue is very very poor. Hopefully many others will leave too.
Oh and as an aside, after removing AVG and with the Logitech dongle back in my PC has booted up perfectly.
I am also an IT Tech and have the same problem today with one of our company Windows 10 computers. We have a paid Business version of the AVG. I have repeatedly rebooted the computer and tried to enter Safe Mode and cannot. It just goes back to the Watch Dog initializing screen. I see now the mention of a mouse dongle. I will try removing it and see if the computer boots. Thanks for those, other than AVG, to post some possible solutions than apologies. Apologies don't fix the computers.

After reading the disaster stories here, I feel lucky that my fix was relatively easy. As stated above, I rebooted Windows 10 in safe mode by holding down the power 3x during the bootup process and following the options on the screen. I downloaded the AVG uninstall tool and ran it from a USB drive and everything removed successfully. When I rebooted, it went back to a black screen with those circling dots while I pooped my pants, but after waiting about 20 minutes, I rebooted and everything has come back up normally. Whew!
It does seem ironic that a number of people experiencing this problem have a Logitech dongle, including me (mouse only). I didn't have to remove the dongle, just used the software tool as above. Best of luck to everyone!

I took Carol Baird's advice and simply unplugged the Logitech mouse USB dongle and everything was fine. It booted up no problem. I then restarted (which took several minutes, maybe 10-12) and logged in again. I shut down properly and rebooted, all is well. I shut it down again and reinserted the USB dongle for the mouse, again all is well. I'm using AVG AV Free version 16.111.7797, Framework and Setup version is 1.132.2.38575.
After reading all these posts, is this really an AVG problem? Looks more to me like MS missed something during their latest and ever ongoing patches/updates. Either way, I hope others have such a simple fix. I spent more time lamenting it and reading vs actually doing anything. Also, I had no trouble getting into Safe Mode by simply using Advanced options under the boot menu. The particular computer is some HP something or other and I simply used the ESC button to pause boot up and select from there.
Okay, I need you guys to idiot-proof this for me. I know next to nothing about computers except how to turn it on and use basic functions (e.g. Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.). After updating Windows 10, my Toshiba laptop is giving me the watchdog error reported above in the thread. I tried booting in safe-mode, following the instructions above (from RC, I believe); however, I can never actually start in safe-mode (I never get that final screen that he shows where you select to operate in safe-mode). I have also tried removing my logitech dongles, but that did not seem to help either. I don't have a CD that I can use to download the AVG remover or the Windows ISO (whatever that is). Can I do those with a flashdrive instead? If so, how? And how do I use that when I can't even boot up in safe-mode? What are the steps to solve this for my particular problem (not a pretend gerneral one-size-fits-all solution)? Please help. My computer is bricked and I rely on my computer for work. I would also like for someone to explain to my why no one warned us about this problem if it's been going on this long? This isn't something that should continue to be happening if AVG and Microsoft are aware of the problem. That's like having a bridge that's out and not putting up signs to warn people. Shame on both companies for doing this to thier customers and ruining their computers. This has cost me both time and money. I need a fix for this now (and a fix that doesn't require that I have a computer engeneering degree to understand). Please, please, please help me.

Karthikeyan, I've already tried that. The problem is that when I hit restart after going through the procedure the blue screen with the option to go into safe mode never appears. Windows just repeats an attempted repair.

Hi, yesterday I was communicating with Karthikeyan about my inability to access Windows. Karthikeyan suggested that I create the AVG Rescue CD. I was successful at doing so, and even figured out how to get my computer to boot from the USB flashdrive. However, The AVG Rescue CD has a whole host of options to select from and I don't know what I'm supposed to do with it. What selections am I supposed to make while running the Rescue CD? And how is it supposed to fix my computer so that I can access Windows? I need a detailed description for this particular problem if possible. Directing me to another web page with general facts regarding the Rescue CD does not tell me how to use if for my particular problem. I don't even know what any of those options on the rescue CD mean. So far it looks like all I've done is to run a virus scan. Please help. I desperately need my computer up and running again.
Thank you Ranjani, I actually looked at that yesterday. It wasn't as detailed as I would have hoped because it doesn't cover all of the options in the user interface. For instance, there is quick scan and scan. When you select scan there are some options of what to run the scan on. I'm not sure what those selections refer to. However, yesterday I did run a scan so maybe if I restart the computer it will work? Am I guessing correctly then that all this Repair CD does then is run a virus scan? Also, if the Repair CD does not solve my problem (does not let me access Windows - or even use safe mode), what would be my next step to solving the problem?

We do have an option in the rescue CD to change the value of AVG files that will allow your computer to boot into windows without any issue. If you do not see that option, then we suggest you to try this step and check if you are able to boot into your computer. Please unplug all the USB cables (eg: Printer, Scanner, HDD) then try to reboot the computer. After the computer reboots try pressing “Esc” or “F8” key to check whether it skips to boot screen. Karhikeyan, I can't seem to find where on the AVG Rescue CD it says "Change the value of AVG files". Could you perhaps walk me through those steps? An example with screenshots would be nice if possible. Now as to your suggestion about unplugging USB cables, I've already unplugged everything from my computer (even my logitech dongles). The only thing that was hooked up to my computer was the USB AVG Rescue CD. Still the computer will not boot into safe mode (to the best of my knowledge, F8 does not work with Windows 10; instead, you have to get to the safe mode settings from the Windows Repair option - as described by RC in one of the earlier threads). What other options do I have? This is an unnecessarily complicated problem. Why is there no real solution to this? I desperately need my computer back up and running. Is there any other way to contact AVG instead of this insanely slow discussion board? At this rate, even if there is a solution to this problem, it will take weeks to solve in this trial and error process. I'm really frustrated.

Please follow this steps to rename the AVG folders * Launch AVG Rescue CD. * Select Utilities, and then select File Manager. * Browse to /mnt/sda1/Windows/System32/drivers * Note: If you have more hard drives in your computer, the Windows folder may be available in /sda2/, /sda3/, etc. instead of /sda1/.
* Scroll down to view files starting with "avg" in their name, such as avgldx86.sys, avgmfx86.sys, avgtdix.sys, etc. * Select each file starting with "avg", and then press the keys SHIFT+F6 on your keyboard to open the file rename dialogue. * Change the "sys" part of the name to "old" in the to: line, and then press ENTER to confirm the change. The name of the file will then be e.g. "avgmfx86.old". * When all AVG files are renamed, remove the AVG Rescue CD CD or USB drive from the computer, and then restart the computer (press CTRL+ALT+DELETE keys simultaneously). * Once your computer starts, uninstall AVG by following the steps in the article Uninstall AVG. Ranjani, Why would you suggest that I contact my local technician? What do you suspect is wrong with my computer and why would they be able to fix it when AVG cannot? I've been reading up on the forums and this is apparently an issue between Microsoft and AVG. Why should I have to pay someone to fix a problem that AVG created? My computer worked perfectly fine until the most recent update and now AVG has bricked my computer. AVG should be responsible for fixing the problem.

Just out of curiosity, the directions provided earlier were to go into: /mnt/sda1/Windows/System32/drivers and to change the file extentions to .old. Would it help to also go into other areas and rename those files as well (for example: /mnt/sda2/Program Files (x86)/AVG/Av/Drivers)? Or would doing so make the problem worse?
I'm having same problem on my Win 10 laptop after windows update, now after 2nd reboot back screen was stuck on watchdog and I hit return after a few minutes and it rebooted...during this 3rd reboot I removed my USB mouse and all of the sudden I am into boot mode and now back to normal...i'm hoping that between the numbnuts at Microsoft & the good people at AVG that there is a built in fix for this, because if I lose my Hard Drive there will be hell to pay. Should I uninstall avg or is the fix going to work on avg update?

AVG team, It would be helpful to know anything about progress on a solution. This thread was started sometime in May 2015 (not a typing error on the year). I have used your Antivirus for years. The response I received from above (October 9 and 10) was that you could not find my account...what is that? In case this will assist anyone else: I removed the wireless mouse dongle as per Carol Baird (thank you Carol!) and had to reboot my laptop several times, meticulously searching for any AVG file, delete, empty recycle bin, and repeat. I could attach my mouse dongle after fully booted to the desktop, remove dongle, reboot, etc. I have now removed AVG from the rest of the computers in the house as preventative as 19 months is too long of a wait for resolution. Yesterday (October 30) I tried to install AVG Free and ran into the same problem as everyone here – The WatchDog Inferno. After a couple of hours I managed to get rid of it, and I must agree with Sandy PJ – "...19 months is too long of a wait for resolution...". For many years I have advised people to use AVG Free but now I must say: no more AVG for me and I won't advise anyone to use it. Sorry.

sorry to bring this up again, but my laptop has just started with this Watchdog message. Its a Windows 10 Lenovo z50-75 laptop and doesnt have anything Logitech on there. has a fix come out yet or is backing up the files on the computer, and then resetting the laptop the only way?

Wow, this problem first appeared over a year ago? I encountered it in October. Curiously, it behaves a little differently on my HP Pavilion laptop. After the black screen locked up I had to pull the battery and do a cold boot. Shift-F8 didn't go into the boot options or boot in safe mode, instead it allowed Win10 to boot normally. I was very competent back in the NT/XP days, but Win10 is beyond my ken. What things I was able to check seem OK. I haven't seen any of the secondary problems others have reported. For example, I use a logitech wireless mouse but the usb dongle doesn't interfere.

Balasubramanian, It was indeed watchdog. I think I had to use shift-f8 to kick it past watchdog startup on a second occasion, in Nov. My laptop had no difficulties since... until today. AVG updated while my back was turned, and it rebooted into the text screen with the watchdog progress count. shift-f8 would no longer kick past the lockup. Removing the Logitech usb link worked.
Now I can again leave the usb link in place when hibernating, sleeping, or cold boot after normal shutdown. However, warm boot with Logitech link in place results in watchdog lockup, and after pulling the battery to force stop it will lock up as long as usb link is in place. Logitech link can be replaced anytime after successfully getting past watchdog progress screen.
I have had the above described problem on my PC. I contacted AVG who, by accessing my PC removed and reinstalled my products, which didn't solve the problem. I have a logitech wireless keyboard and mouse so taking the advice in this forum, I removed the dongles during boot up and have been able to use my PC. Now, here's the thing. About a week ago I forgot to remove the dongles, yet my PC booted up normally, and has been fine ever since. So someone appears to have fixed this problem with an update. But who? I've seen no updates from logitech or Windows 10, but my AVG has had an update. So have AVG fixed this problem but don't want to admit their initial liability? Dear AVG for starters im hoping this site is safe to be on and wont lock up my phone with some AVG error. I have been locked out of my compaq notebook for many months having tried everything to get out of this watchdog problem. i have spent money in a computor shop to have it diagnosed and as myself they also found the removal tools to be of no affect. so i gave in trying despite having much information and recordings that i needed and cannot afford to lose or be wiped out. so i may start from scratch and try the revomendations of some of the more succesful outcomes on this blog/forum however that said, if it still fails (and ive even tried all formats of avg removal tool by usb drive/smart card and cd to no avail) then i will be escalating complaints for pursuing compensation, which i am more than amazed ive not seen mentioned once on many blogs and forums, and at least an offer for a free instalation of avg pro for those affected by this now very long term problem. do yourselves have no liability to the general public because some are the free versions? however your product is in breach of terms and conditions as it has not provided what it says it will do, but moreso the emensity of problems it has created for your customers who downloaded or bought your product in good faith. I will not spend too long on going round the vicious circle of trying the AVG removal tool scenario again, before escalating serious complaints with yourselves and furthermore the ombuseman. Cant really thank you AVG because this is such a bad failure in product research, that arnt even beta products, but more that your failure to respond with a succesful remedy has fallen short of research also. And i cant believe you have offered a link to reinstal avg (at people own cost) if they finally remove avg/watchdog and access thier machines again. maybe you dont understand the nature of trust.

I have used AVG (Free) for many years on all my Computers with no problems, including running on two Windows 10 systems for the last few months. Yesterday AVG did an update on one system and asked to reboot Windows. When I did, I got the AVG 'Watchdog' messages as described by Hans above & Windows hangs up without loading. AVG has now done it's update on this Windows 10 system and wants to reboot, but I think that might be a very bad idea! Suggestions please on how to recover the other one.

I found another AVG Support note which suggested renaming files in C:\Windows\System32\Drivers called avgXXXX.sys as avgXXXX.old. That wasn't successful either, don't get the AVG messages now, but Windows fails to laod up.
I tried using AVG Rescue CD via USB drive but, when i click on the "removable drive" link, the computer simply restarts.
After that I did the same as Graham (command prompt and all) and ended with the same message.
In the end I think I'll have to format my HDD but, on a positive note, I found a way to save the files that had no backup.
Using the command prompt, you can open the notepad. After that you go to file>open and than you can just copy any file stored into your computer to some USB drive or external HD connected to your computer.
(If you can't see your files, just change the type of file box to all files or something like that.)
Is it a bodge? Yes. But saved all the work I did during the past 2 weeks.
Still I'll keep following this thread to see if anyone finds a better solution.

Your software has BRICKED alot of people computers. BRICKED meaning can not be used.
AVG Rescue cant be run as AVG Watchdog wont allow it. I cant boot to safe mode or boot to CD.
I work in IT and ive had alot of people call me about this issue. Im having a hard time getting past the black AVG Watchdog screen.
Ive changed Boot options on BIOS to boot from CD and ive created a AVG Rescue CD. Still just runs AVG Watchdog & nothing works.
The only outcome i see at this point is alot of people having to pay to have there computers whiped clean and start fresh.
THIS wont be easy, as you need to boot from disk or usb to restore Operating System and AVG doesnt seem to let the pc do anything but run watchdog.
For alot of people this is going to be hell. And all AVG can say it USE WINDOWS DISK? So what about the people with no restore points in windows?
Also most laptops and computers these days dont come with Windows Disks anymore.
So basically for everyone that doesnt understand AVGs responses, they are saying you need to have your computer totally whiped clean.
This includes removing the hdd to possibly save files / photos. Then formatting disk and then hopefullly with your fingers corossed when you re-install the formatted drive you will be able to re-install windows.

I've been having the exact same problems as everyone else here, but I managed to bypass the Watchdog and access the AVG Rescue CD.
While the computer is closed, hold down the f2 button, then press the power button. Don't let go of f2 until a bunch of options pop up, then click on Troubleshoot>Advanced Options>UEFI Settings.
Now the BIOS will pop up, and under the Boot options, change UEFI to Legacy BIOS, then save your settings.
Just reboot your computer, and AVG Rescue CD should open!
Currently, I am scanning my hardrive, which I assume won't do much, but I'll keep you updated on the progress. Good luck!

The F2 screen is the first thing I have been able to do, so thank you! However, I do not see 'troubleshoot' or anything with 'UEFI.' There is a Boot menu at the top, but with none of the options you listed. In the System Configuration menu under the Advanced tab, I found "Boot Mode ... [UEFI Boot]" but it is black and I am not able to select it....

As you may not understand (which I find surprising considering the above commentary) but Microsoft offers a reinstall option, BUT that doesn't do ANYTHING. Caelan, I did as you suggested and like Gwen did not get the same screen. I am now doing the system check.
Whatever the case, what I did was open the UEFI Firmware settings which replaces the traditional BIOS from earlier Windows versions, then change the settings to boot up with BIOS like the older versions because AVG Rescue CD is probably not compatible with newer UEFI Boot (I'm just taking a calculated guess here, though I may be wrong). Another possible way to open it up and follow the steps I mentioned is to quickly open and close your computer two or three times, before any message pops up, by holding the power button down.
Twas a shame, AVG lost a customer.
I was lucky enough to already have a second computer, a USB, and a backup drive at my disposal, which helped immensely for the next part of recovering my computer.
If you're okay with reinstalling Windows, I'll post again giving step-by-step instructions of what I did. I couldn't come up with any other solution because of the corruption.

Windows Explorer can NOT acess most files, Windows hangs, Wireless Icon locks at a Blue Circle.
I try to activate services.msc. This can take 5~10 min and I find that AVG Watchdog is is stalled at 'Starting". It can NOT be started manually, "Access Denied". Tried AVG Repair no solution.
Started in Safe mode to disable AVG on startup but AVG insists on starting.
The only thing that restores the machine is a uninstall of AVG free and use of AVG Remover. You must use AVG Remover at least twice. Even after this Registry Checker still find residual AVG entries and in appropriate Windows Firewall settings related to AVG.
I have now gone through THREE clean installs of Windows 7 and AVG Free with same results. AVG has now been removed from this laptop and I will NOT be installing AVG on anymore computers.

I suggest you to download an ISO image file of Windows 10 and you can try running a Startup Repair from the OS disc.Startup Repair is a Windows recovery tool that can fix certain system problems that might prevent Windows from starting.
1. Boot from the Windows 10 disc.
2. Once selecting your language, time and keyboard settings, click Next to load the next window, then click on the Repair your computer link on the bottom left corner of the window.
3. You should then be presented with a Choose an Option screen, with Troubleshoot as an option to select.
5. Select Startup Repair from the Advanced options screen and then select the target operating system to repair, which would be Windows 10 in this case.

There is no point in trying a reinstall, I have done three of them already with a clean install of Windows 7.
You suggestion with the Microsoft link to a Windows 10 problem is some what hopeless and a waste of time. This thread is about a Windows 7 problem with the AVG Watchdog not starting.
Since AVG has not fixed their problem . I will stay with my current solution and uninstall AVG free from my computers and those of my clients. It is not easy to remove AVG. After the normal uninstall form the control panel you MUST use the AVG Revover at least twice. Each time you use the AVG Remover it will shutdown and restart up your computer a number of times. On completion of that there are still many AVG related entries in the registry and you need to use a Registry Cleaner to get it all cleaned out. I have moved on to another anti-virus programs.

From what I understand, you may not be able to change your computer setting into Legacy BIOS..
However, I'll let you know what I did anyways. Before you start, you will need a backup drive, and a USB or CD with a Windows Installation Program of whichever Windows version you have.
1) Hold down f2 to go into the UEFI Menu.
2)Click on Troubleshoot>Advanced Options>UEFI Firmware Settings, and click on the "Restart", after you plug in the USB or the CD with the Windows 10 installation program.
3)Follow Balsubramanian's instructions, but instead of the Startup Repair, start cmd Boot.
4)Plug your backup drive into the computer, and type in "notepad" (without the " symbols)
5)Back up your hard drive by following the steps on this link: http://www.ampercent.com/backup-files-folders-windows-boot-failure/9325/
6)Start a fresh install of your Windows version, by clearing out your hard drive completely, with the USB or CD, instead of just repairing it, which may cause issues or not fix yours.
Your problem should be fixed!
Take note that, depending on how many files is on your hard drive, it may take up to a few hours for the files to copy from one hard drive to your backup hard drive. During this period, it may say that Notepad is "Not Responding". However, it is in the middle of copying the files, and will function again once the files are all copied! Also take note that, once in a while, an error message may pop up with options to "Retry", "Skip", or "Cancel". Always choose "Skip"!

Tried a lot of things. Nothing works. And the most annoying thing is that Safe Mode isn't working/not available.
But suddenly I found a way to get into Safe Mode.
* When Watch Dog initialization finished, hold down SHIFT button and hold powerbutton for shutting down the PC.
* KEEP HOLDING THE SHIFT-button and reboot again
* Windows 10 should automatically start in the recovery environment with a message similar to ‘Recovery. It looks like Windows didn't load correctly'.
* Choose for "See advanced repair options"
* In the next menu click on "Advanced options"
* Click on "Startup settings" -> It will ask to restart and will enable/change some Windows settings
* Choose the option "Start up in Safe Mode" (press F5), it will reboot in Safe Mode
* When trying to uninstall AVG in the Settings app it gave me a error.
* Downloaded the tool "AVG remover" and it succesfully removed AVG.
* Reboot and Windows works again.
No more AVG for me...

After the constant pop-ups, (and I have the Pro, purchased, version) this Watchdog fiasco is the last straw.
You won't get your money back, no surprise there, but remember you have signed their “Continuing Protection Service” which means if you don't cancel they take your money automatically.

Why is an avg* file critical when I have removed the program?
Is there anyway to get it onto my "dead" laptop? (I have the file from my desktop; if I get the laptop up and running I will definitely by removing AVG from it!) The only thing I can do is boot into System Recovery. This does not allow me to "recover" though because I am missing AVGBOOTA.SYS...

Why should any end user not confident with computers ever buy anything from you ever again? Most people will be without a working computer or will have to pay to get their computer fixed because your programmers write faulty software.
When is the bug getting fixed?
You are making a complete disaster of fixing this.
1. This question is not "answered". Please unmark it as answered and leave it as unanswered until the problem is fixed.
2. We need a software solution, when's it coming? People have bricked PCs and cannot wait indefinitely.
3. We need a clear interim solution. This thread has a number of solutions. Which one are you suggesting we do now?
In the meantime, I have fixed the issue as follows
1. Keep restarting PC and pressing F11. With enough attempts, it does seem to finally boot. Wait about 30 seconds once the Watchdog black screen appears and if nothing seems to be happening then force reboot with the power button. No need for "rescue CDs" which is difficult as I don't have a built in or external CD player and no need for downloads which is also a bit difficult without a working laptop.
2. When booted, use the AVG removal tool. Remove AVG.
3. PC boots successfully.

In order to get my system back up:
I could not get the USB or DVD drive to boot. That may be an issue with this machine or it may be something to do with the issue. I tried an external DVD as well, without success.
Then I tried using F8 to go into safe mode but in Win 10 it defaults to ignore that. I went online and found out how to change that to a legacy configuration. That allowed me to get to F8. Safe mode didn't work but I noticed at the bottom of the list there are some new options (at least since I last needed F8) and one of them is Disable Early Launch Anti-Malware Driver. I used that to get the computer back and then was able to get to a running system. Then I was able to remove AVG.
During the troubleshooting, I also went in to the Windows\System32\Drivers and renamed all the avg*.sys to avg*.old. That changed my ability to get to the Advanced items because it kept failing with a missing avgboota.sys file. I'm not sure how this affected my final solution.
We would request you to run AVG remover tool to completely remove AVG and then re install it once you enter into the normal mode.

My fairly new All-In-One desktop has been bricked since August (my original post). I created AVG rescue DVD/USB and Windows 10 installation media DVD, but problem was that my pc would not start up from external media after I changed BIOS boot sequence and go straight to annoying watch dog loading black screen. It might be something to do with changing back to LEGACY BIOS as one of post.
It sounds like several people were able to load into safe mode using physically restarting windwos 3 times using power buttons. Hopefully I can access my hard drive to back up picture and personal files before trying to fix. Carol, Colin and Darryl's posts have been most helpful. AVG, please figure this out before you loose more customers.
I have had one Win10 pc stuck with the windows update for nearly a week. I was too busy to do much about it. Then another similar pc that seemed to have accepted the win10 anniversary update got stuck at startup with this AVG watchdog business. I have AVG for business on both. Despite the frustrations of those above, I don't think this is to do with AVG, and more to do with Microsoft. I am very greatful to Carol Baird for the tip about the Logitech dongle for keyboard and mouse. With both computers, removing this, restarting the pcs and letting them restart/ continue windows10 update process has led to success.
Like Dr Hell, I've done a couple of restarts and all seems well. Fingers crossed...
What upsets me the most, though, is that people have been having this issues for months. Months, AVG people. You knew about this issue, clearly, as you attempted to respond to each post here and even said the issue had been sent to a higher up team. So why was I asked to update a few days ago if you knew people were having conflicts months ago? And for that reason, I'm out. Researching other companies and putting my money elsewhere.

After much research I think I have found the answer to everyone's problem and how to fix it. This issue is something with the new Windows 10 Anniversary Update and AVG (I have had the same problem with AVG Cloudcare and AVG Free). The best way to go is remove AVG and use something else.
Booting to Safe Mode
You will have to get your computer to boot to the preboot menu for Windows 10. To do this I had to physically turn the computer off 3 times when it showed the windows 10 logo. The third time it should say something like "Preparing to Run Automatic Repair". Once it is done with trying to repair it will fail and give you the option to restart or advanced repair. Click advanced repair then troubleshoot then advanced options then startup settings. It should give you the option to reboot the computer. Go ahead and reboot and let it get to the boot menu screen (times like this I miss the old f8 on boot that they had). Once the menu comes up select Safe Mode with Networking.
Remove AVG
Once it boots into safe mode run the AVG Remover (I tried to run the uninstaller but it just gave me an error the remover seemed to work so just use that). This will uninstall AVG from the computer. Seeing as they haven't figured out how to fix this since the update this is the ONLY way I can confirm that it works and will stay working.
One more note, the first time it goes into repair mode, it does a total scan of the hard drive. I went to bed at that point. When I came back, the dreaded black screen with the internet watchdog was there. BUT . . . stopping it at the windows logo a few more times, put it back into repair, and it skipped the drive scan the second time.
Also, Microsoft, it would be wonderful if the repair disk had the option to do a safe start with networking! I ran that bleeping thing 10 times, and could not restore anything. That option would have been GREAT. Thanks, all – have a great day.

I have not tried the rescue disk as some other posts describe Windows as corrupted and losing everything...I have alread lost 7-1/2 hours of time, cannot risk losing my files, data, etc.
As per AVG Technologies posters: Aug. 12 "escalated to senior team;" Sept. 4 "techs going to update;" Sept. 10 "contact Microsoft support and they will fix this issue for you;" Sept. 18 (and this is a beauty!): "happy that the issue is resolved..."

I have paid for AVG Internet Security and AVG TuneUp and neither can be installed without causing this watchdog issue (I have confimed by uninstalling and reinstalling both seperately).
The AVG uninstaller also render Windows Defender useless as Windows Defender cannot be enabled as it still thinks AVG is installed.
I now have Avast free installed to cover me while I am without AVG but would like an answer on when this issue will be corrected as my AVG subscriptions are still being depleted even though I cannot use the software.

Richard, What's your Win OS?. Just for your info please note that with the introduction of Win 8 Windows Defender was re-classified as an AntiVirus prog which could conflict with AVG so it's disabled when AVG is installed.

Understood regarding the Windows Defender but it appears that the AVG removal tool does not fully uninstall AVG and so Windows Defender cannot be enabled as it thinks AVG is still there.
I guess installing Avast brute forced it somehow and it was able to install.
If I now uninstall AVAST will it clear whatever setting out it needs to and I can enable Windows Defender ?

But going back to my original question. When will AVG be fixed so that I can reinstall and continue to use what I paid for?

I just wanted to let you know how frustrated I am. My company paid a high price to get 3 years of service from you. An enterprise level of assistance should of been provided. We've had problems before but nothing like this. Over the past 2 months, I have encountered so many problems which I believed were to be from microsoft windows 10. They were not, they were from AVG's watchdog / reactor software that controls the boot startup of windows. I'm not entirely blaming AVG, it should of been better tested at microsoft as well. However you have tainted your name at my company. I will be uninstalling all 50 licenses you provide, and be going with some other software. If this issue was this big, the littlest you could have done was notify your enterprise users explaining to them. Not once have I seen an email or anything. I will not be reccomending AVG to anyone, this is still causing at least 20 computers a day in our company to seize on boot up. After uninstallation of AVG, the problem is resolved, and the updates go fine.
You have a lot of work to do to rectify yourselves. I can't believe you have let this issue go for this long.

I then Installed Panda Security and then restarted my computer..... oh boy.... now I am in a Black Screen with a perpectual spinning circle dots for 25 min now... I am running Windows 10 with the F'd Up Update. What do I do now?

After reading the disaster stories here, I feel lucky that my fix was relatively easy. As stated above, I rebooted Windows 10 in safe mode by holding down the power 3x during the bootup process and following the options on the screen. I downloaded the AVG uninstall tool and ran it from a USB drive and everything removed successfully. When I rebooted, it went back to a black screen with those circling dots while I pooped my pants, but after waiting about 20 minutes, I rebooted and everything has come back up normally. Whew!
It does seem ironic that a number of people experiencing this problem have a Logitech dongle, including me (mouse only). I didn't have to remove the dongle, just used the software tool as above. Best of luck to everyone!
After reading all these posts, is this really an AVG problem? Looks more to me like MS missed something during their latest and ever ongoing patches/updates. Either way, I hope others have such a simple fix. I spent more time lamenting it and reading vs actually doing anything. Also, I had no trouble getting into Safe Mode by simply using Advanced options under the boot menu. The particular computer is some HP something or other and I simply used the ESC button to pause boot up and select from there.

I've already tried that. The problem is that when I hit restart after going through the procedure the blue screen with the option to go into safe mode never appears. Windows just repeats an attempted repair.

* Launch AVG Rescue CD.
* Select Utilities, and then select File Manager.
* Browse to /mnt/sda1/Windows/System32/drivers
* Note: If you have more hard drives in your computer, the Windows folder may be available in /sda2/, /sda3/, etc. instead of /sda1/.
* Select each file starting with "avg", and then press the keys SHIFT+F6 on your keyboard to open the file rename dialogue.
* Change the "sys" part of the name to "old" in the to: line, and then press ENTER to confirm the change. The name of the file will then be e.g. "avgmfx86.old".
* When all AVG files are renamed, remove the AVG Rescue CD CD or USB drive from the computer, and then restart the computer (press CTRL+ALT+DELETE keys simultaneously).
* Once your computer starts, uninstall AVG by following the steps in the article Uninstall AVG. After which you can do a clean installation.

I have tried your suggestions and have renamed the AVG files to ".old"; however, this did not produce any effect. I am still unable to access Windows (I still can't even get safe mode). I also ensured that I had no USB drives plugged in (no printer, no USB's, no dongles, etc.). However, the computer will still not boot up Windows. What would you suggest as a next step?

Kindly follow the below suggested steps after rebooted your device in safe mode.
Press windows key and r key simultaneously to open a run command. Type " devmgmt.msc ", press enter , search for "Universal Serial Bus Controller" and it will give the some list of options. Right click on each list and delete all.

Why would you suggest that I contact my local technician? What do you suspect is wrong with my computer and why would they be able to fix it when AVG cannot? I've been reading up on the forums and this is apparently an issue between Microsoft and AVG. Why should I have to pay someone to fix a problem that AVG created? My computer worked perfectly fine until the most recent update and now AVG has bricked my computer. AVG should be responsible for fixing the problem.

It would be helpful to know anything about progress on a solution. This thread was started sometime in May 2015 (not a typing error on the year). I have used your Antivirus for years. The response I received from above (October 9 and 10) was that you could not find my account...what is that?
In case this will assist anyone else:
I removed the wireless mouse dongle as per Carol Baird (thank you Carol!) and had to reboot my laptop several times, meticulously searching for any AVG file, delete, empty recycle bin, and repeat. I could attach my mouse dongle after fully booted to the desktop, remove dongle, reboot, etc. I have now removed AVG from the rest of the computers in the house as preventative as 19 months is too long of a wait for resolution. Yesterday (October 30) I tried to install AVG Free and ran into the same problem as everyone here – The WatchDog Inferno. After a couple of hours I managed to get rid of it, and I must agree with Sandy PJ – "...19 months is too long of a wait for resolution...".
For many years I have advised people to use AVG Free but now I must say: no more AVG for me and I won't advise anyone to use it.

Its a Windows 10 Lenovo z50-75 laptop and doesnt have anything Logitech on there.

If the screen shows as AVG Watchdog then it means that you are facing the same issue as discussed in this post.

It was indeed watchdog. I think I had to use shift-f8 to kick it past watchdog startup on a second occasion, in Nov. My laptop had no difficulties since... until today. AVG updated while my back was turned, and it rebooted into the text screen with the watchdog progress count. shift-f8 would no longer kick past the lockup. Removing the Logitech usb link worked.
Now I can again leave the usb link in place when hibernating, sleeping, or cold boot after normal shutdown. However, warm boot with Logitech link in place results in watchdog lockup, and after pulling the battery to force stop it will lock up as long as usb link is in place. Logitech link can be replaced anytime after successfully getting past watchdog progress screen.
I have a logitech wireless keyboard and mouse so taking the advice in this forum, I removed the dongles during boot up and have been able to use my PC.
Now, here's the thing. About a week ago I forgot to remove the dongles, yet my PC booted up normally, and has been fine ever since. So someone appears to have fixed this problem with an update. But who? I've seen no updates from logitech or Windows 10, but my AVG has had an update.
So have AVG fixed this problem but don't want to admit their initial liability? I can find no mention anywhere of a fix anywhere, so, AVG, did you fix it?
for starters im hoping this site is safe to be on and wont lock up my phone with some AVG error.
I have been locked out of my compaq notebook for many months having tried everything to get out of this watchdog problem.
i have spent money in a computor shop to have it diagnosed and as myself they also found the removal tools to be of no affect.
so i gave in trying despite having much information and recordings that i needed and cannot afford to lose or be wiped out.
so i may start from scratch and try the revomendations of some of the more succesful outcomes on this blog/forum
however that said, if it still fails (and ive even tried all formats of avg removal tool by usb drive/smart card and cd to no avail) then i will be escalating complaints for pursuing compensation, which i am more than amazed ive not seen mentioned once on many blogs and forums, and at least an offer for a free instalation of avg pro for those affected by this now very long term problem.

however your product is in breach of terms and conditions as it has not provided what it says it will do, but moreso the emensity of problems it has created for your customers who downloaded or bought your product in good faith.
I will not spend too long on going round the vicious circle of trying the AVG removal tool scenario again, before escalating serious complaints with yourselves and furthermore the ombuseman.
Cant really thank you AVG because this is such a bad failure in product research, that arnt even beta products, but more that your failure to respond with a succesful remedy has fallen short of research also.
And i cant believe you have offered a link to reinstal avg (at people own cost) if they finally remove avg/watchdog and access thier machines again.

I uninstalled the software from my laptop but the problem is not still fixed. I even used avg remover and another program but it did not solve anything. I also dont have any logitech drivers kind of stiuff. Please help me
