AVG Protection Pro is not working with MacType

Hello AVG Support,

A short time ago, I renewed my license -- and at the same time, upgraded from AVG Internet Security 2015 to AVG Protection Pro 2016.  Since this time, I have run into the issue where I can no longer use MacType -- a font-rendering application that improves Windows’ text quality to that of Mac.  When both software are running together on my system (see the System Details section below the error message), the majority of the other applications -- e.g., Internet Explorer, Firefox, Notepad++, and others  -- crash only seconds after I try to launch them with the following error message:

However, if I temporarily disable AVG, everything works perfectly fine without crashes / errors.  For this reason, I added the C:\Program Files\MacType\mactray.exe application to AVG’s exception list, but that did not make any difference at all.  In addition, I even tried adding the entire C:\Program Files\MacType folder to the exception list, but still the same behavior.

I am not a developer by any means, but I believe that both MacType and AVG inject DLLs -- i.e., EasyHK64.dll and avghookx.dll -- into all new processes; and thus, I suspect that the two DLLs are not playing well together.  With that said, do you have any ideas of what I can try and/or do?  Or, is there something that can be tweaked in the AVG code to correct this behavior?

Right now, I obviously want to keep my PC safe from threats so I do not dare disable AVG, but sadly, that means that I am stuck with ugly fonts and hard-to-read text, which is not good for someone who wears corrective lenses. :-(  In short, I truly hope that you can help me.

Thanks and regards,
Bernard

Hello Balasubramanian,

Thanks for your quick response on this issue.  I appreciate the offer of remote support, but to be honest, I was really hoping that one of the AVG Technicians would independently work on this easily reproducible issue, which I why I provided all the needed information; and then, come back with a possible solution to test.  I have quickly performed this exact scenario on a test system, where MacType is installed; after installing AVG Protection, I immediately began getting the application crashes relating to avghookx.dll .

I myself work long hours staring at computer screens and resolving issues, so despite this remote service’s 24x7 availability, the last thing I want to do is come home and spend even more time sitting at a computer and staring at the screen. :-(  With that said, would it be possible for an AVG Technician or Developer to simply reproduce this in-house, analyse it, and attempt to provide a possible solution or workaround for testing?

Thanks and regards,
Bernard
