Windows 10 black screen starting watchdog initialization

My Windows 10 Pro 64 bit system has crashed after the most recent Windows update. When the computer first booted after the update everything seemed in order except the computer had no internet connectivity although it could still see resources on the local network. Windows diagnosed the issue potentially as a problem with the firewall. I noted that the AVG software did not seem to be running in the tray so I started it from the start menu. The program started but immediately reported problems with the firewall and that the problem had been fixed and needed a restart to complete the repairs.

Now when the computer starts it will not boot rather ends with the following on a black screen:

PHASE 0
- starting watch dog initialization
- loading configuration( root kernel, set up)
- pre initialization events
- creating watch dog dynamic key list
- sub systems initialization
- finished

Phase 1:
- Initialize Components
- starting reactor
- starting components
- starting internal subsystems
- starting command channels
-  Srm start actions
- starting external subsystems
- finished

The computer hangs at this point.

Attempts to boot into safe mode fail with the same Watchdog screen. Attempts to do the non destructive repairs from the Windows recovery disk have failed.

Information from my AVG installation is:

Any assistance would be appreciated.

Leo,
We are sorry to hear about the inconvenience caused. We would suggest you to try pressing “Esc” or “F8” key to check whether it skips to boot screen. Also, please be sure that you have unplugged all the USB cables (eg: Printer, Scanner, HDD) then try to reboot the computer. Kindly let us know if you have any other alternate device currently in use. Thank you!

Ranjani,
Thank you for the suggestion of removing the USB devices. I have a Dymo label printer and a Logitech wireless keyboard/mouse receiver in use. Removing only the printer resulted in the same Watchdog screen. Removing the keyboard/mouse, as expected, generated a keyboard error but then the machine booted to the login screen where, after replugging the keyboard, I was able to login. Everything appeared to be working including the internet connectivity. After a very long shut down and restart the machine booted with the keyboard/mouse attached. Another normal shutdown and restart now seems to have everything back in order. (Even with the USB label printer plugged in). The AVG software reports everything up to date and functioning. It shows the last update as of this morning.

I guess I'll let you know if anything changes but for now I'm back and working. Thank you for your time and assistance.

I just had the same thing happen here.  Called my computer shop and was told there is an issue between AVG and Logitech wireless devices on Windows 10 computers

They had me disconnect the Logitech USB dongle, shut down the computer and restart.  They said I would have to do this procedure each time the problem occurred until Logitech and AVG got together and solved their problem.

We had the same issue on my folks computer last week as they have a Logitech wireless keyboard and mouse. Unfortunately removing AVG was the only option unless they were to go buy a different branded keyboard. Since removing AVG their computer boots up fine but I had to use a different antivirus but I would really like to put AVG back on there for them.Is there a chance the glitch will be resolved soon with the Logitech USB devices?

Hello Shawn,

We can understand your concern but the issue will get resolved even if you remove or uninstall the particular Logitech device driver software.
The permanent solution should be found by Logitech.
If you have the Logitech drivers software uninstall or device removed then you can very well use the AVG antivirus program without any issues.

I have the same problem with trhe screen, but it occurs when the computer is booted up and just not being used.  I can't shut down,  I have to press the on/off button and shut off.  Then I can boot up again and it works fine.

I've had this happen occasionally and it's an annoyance more than anything.  I simply press the power button until my machine shuts off and I restart and everything is fine.  I always wondered what was causing it but a quick Google search brought me here so I at least know what it's for.  It really only happens a few times a year so I'm not really worried by it.
-980888528-980888528 (Avast)
Thank you for your better understanding, Sean.

We appreciate your efforts. The issue is caused by outdated Logitech drivers and is unconnected with our software. This has been confirmed by Microsoft. They informed that it will get fixed in the upcoming windows update. Please feel free to get back to us for any issues with AVG. We work round the clock, thank you!

Im having this problem now too and as far as I know there are no logitech drivers installed on my laptop norndo I own any logitech devices. Ive so far not been successful in bypassing this screen either. I'm currently at a loss on what to do.

I too had this problem this morning. I had a few program updates Microsoft 360, dell update, Dropbox to name a few and then started having the problem.   The black screen would appear as mentioned in the first post....the computer would load fine, internet would connect and look ok, but no internet.  Webpages won't load, email won't check etc...  going to try uninstalling AVG.

Unfortunately I`ve got the same **** problem...

I`ve tried to follow the posted instructions but I can`t enter safe mode (Win10). So I´m not able to run the remover tool :(
If the issue is a result of using AVG I better remove the prog from my other computers....

I had the same problem, and after a long while, I think I have it figured out. I had just used a new USB drive for the first time when Watch Dog first appeared, so naturally I thought that had something to do with it. I chased that idea around for quite a while before I realized that it didn't Something I read along the way about Logitech bluetooth devices and Windows 10 kept haunting me.

Finally, I realized that I had moved the dongle for my Logitech keyboard and mouse from a USB port on the computer to one on a USB hub, so that I could connect my new 2TB drive directly to the computer. Seemed like a good idea at the time.

As it turned out, the solution to the Watch Dog issue was as simple as putting the Logitech dongle back where it came from. It's been a couple of days not, as I experiment with creating a bootable and persistent Linux system on my USB drive, and Watch Dog has not shown up again.

There may be other reasons that bring it up, but for me, it was just that the Logitech dongle didn't like living on a hub. I suspect that the problem may have been cause by some kind of latency due to the data path from the external hub being slower than a direct connection. Maybe not.

I also suspect that some other USB devices, especially bluetooth, may experience similar problems to the Logitech devices.

In the end, all's well that end's well, and for me, it has. Thanks to whoever brought the Win10/Logitech connection into my mind. It really helped a lot.

Have a nice day!

So how about if you've never plugged a logitech or ANY USB device into the laptop?
e.g., brand new laptop, out of the box. install AVG. reboot. WATCHDOG!

Obviously not JUST a logitech dongle issue.
Melecot GMelecot G
Hey, just ran into the same issue, screen got black and followed up with some types of phases with "watchdog" and wouldn't let me log in then after a few shutdowns voila! Freedom, but I'm still worried that something's wrong, and it happened after I upgraded my Microsoft office 2013 to 2016, coincidence??
AvinashAvinash (Avast)
Melecot, as you can see in the above comments of other customers, this is caused by Logitech USB mouse or keyboard. If you encounter this issue again, unplug all USB devices and boot your PC.
