AVG blocks QNAP QFinder Pro from accessing NAS

Hello,

Along with an increasing number of AVG customers who have reported this issue, I am unable to get QNAP QFinder Pro to access my QNAP NAS ... unless I totally disable AVG's firewall.

I have completed the following but in vain:
- Created a new rule for "C:\Program Files (x86)\QNAP\Qfinder\Qfinder.exe" and set it up to "Allow";
- Included the "C:\Program Files (x86)\QNAP\Qfinder" path as an exception;
- Added the NAS' static IP to the list of IP addresses whitelist in AVG;
- Repaired AVG;

I have a MS Windows 10 x64 notebook with patch 1607 and a paid AVG Internet Security v16.141.7998 application installed.

Could you please let me know the steps to follow to remedy this situation?

Thank you.

Michael

Hello Michael,
We are sorry that you are unable to use QFinder Pro to access your QNAP NAS. Please try to reset the AVG firewall mode to automatic using the instructions given below:
1. Open AVG
2. Go to the Firewall component
3. Click Reset to default
4. Wait until the operation is finished
This will reset the settings of AVG Firewall component to default state and set the Firewall mode to automatic.
Please check if the issue persists, after resetting the firewall mode.
Thank you.

Hi Abirami,

Thank you for your suggestion but it alas did not resolve my issue.

Given that this issue has been happening for other users for over a year now, I would have expected that AVG and its Support personnel would have come up with a reliable solution to rectify this by now.

So what reliable suggestions would you have to resolve this issue?

Hi Kishore,

Thank you for the offer to connect remotely to my computer. I am actually unwilling to have any 3rd party applications installed on my notebook so I searched and managed to get a workable solution.

For everyone's future benefit, the steps I followed to resolve this issue are as follows:
1. Launch AVG and from the AVG Zen dialog box, click on Internet Security then on Firewall;
2. Against Firewall mode, click on Change;
3. A new dialog will then open up;
4. Click on Expert mode;
5. A new dialog box will then open up;
6. Click on System Services in the LH navigation pane;
7. Click on Manage or add your own system rules;
8. A new dialog box will then open up;
9. Click on Add;
10. Create a new rule with the following settings:
- protocol: UDP
- direction: In
- local port(s): 8097
- remote port(s): 8097
- remote address(es): Local network
11. Ensure Allow is displayed;
12. Add a description in the Rule Detail Name field;
13. Click OK to save the new rule;
14. Repeat steps 9-13 for port 3483;
15. Once completed, you should have 2 rules to allow traffic in via ports 8097 and 3483 in that order;
16. Click on OK to close each and every opened dialog boxes;
17. Launch Qfinder Pro and refresh the list to see any QNAP NAS boxes on the local network;

The above worked for the following configuration:
- Operating system version: MS Windows 10 x64 patch 1607
- QNAP server model and firmware version: TS-409 with 3.3.3 (1003T)
- Qfinder Pro version: 6.0.0.1415

All the best.

Hello Balasubramanian,

Thank you for your response. Perhaps there should be a How-To document created which lists the steps mentioned above, for the benefit of all AVG users who have one\more QNAP servers on their respective networks.

Anyway, in addition to the steps listed above, I should point out that it is also important to enable File and Printer Sharing option in AVG.

Lastly, I believe that you can now mark this question as answered.

Cheers,
Michael

Hi Michael, many thanks for creating that rule. I run Win 10 Pro 64 bit and have AVG installed. Even though I tried to specifically allow the qfinderpro.exe file to run and be allowed to pass through the AVG firewall, the qfinderpro.exe does not allow the NAS to be dispayed. Very frustrating and time wasting. Also if one tries to get AVG to ork interactively, it still does not let QfinderPro to access the NAS. So AVG is not really use friendly, and some elements of their user interface don't actually allow one to discover what is stopping the program to work!
You solution worked perfectly for me. Thanks again . How did you know which ports were being blocked by AVG?
What is frustrating is that AVG has not fixed this problem despite it being highlighted. It is the very problem that causes users to uninstall AVG and move to Avast or another program.

Struggling with non-AVG technology? We can fix that, too!
