AVG using more than 90% CPU ????

AVG is using over 90% CPU...why is this???
AVG Antivirus 20%; AVG Service (32-bits) 32,3%
AVG Software Analyzer 14,5 %
AVG Watchdog service 30,4 %

This makes it virtually impossible to do anything at all on my computer...

Any ideas on how to solve this please??

Thanks!

Hello Swa,
We regret for the inconvenience caused. Please try to repair the AVG program and check whether it resolves the issue. Please follow the instructions on the article avgclick.me/RepairAVG to repair your AVG program.
Thank you.
Swa StassijnsSwa Stassijns
Hi,

I did as you suggested: did the AVG Repair... No difference! AVG keeps eating almost all CPU resources.
AVG Antivirus 20,5%
AVG Service (32-bits) 22,3%
AVG Software Analyzer 26,2 %
AVG Watchdog service 22,9 %

Any other ideas please?
KishoreKishore (Avast)
Hello Swa,
In that case we kindly request you to reinstall the AVG program using the instructions on the article http://avgclick.me/howtoreinstallAVG and check whether it resolves the issue.
Thank you.
Swa StassijnsSwa Stassijns

Hi,

I did. Nothing changed ... AVG is still eating almost all CPU resources. Another strange thing is that after removing AVG (following the instructions you refered to) task manager is still refering to AVG services (but CPU usage is 0%). After reinstalling AVG the CPU usage rockets again causing the CPU to be used above 95% ... Which leaves max. 5% for doing productive work... :-(

Any further suggestions?

Swa StassijnsSwa Stassijns
Hi,

I did as you requested. The problem stays the same !  Guess I will have to start looking for an alternative? I hope you people from AVG understand that rendering a PC virtually unusable by claiming almost all its resources is not really a good solution to protect a PC? What is the logic behind this?

I am really disappointed... I liked AVG till now...

Hi Swa,

Thank you for providing us the information. We request you to try repairing your AVG Anti Virus once and check the issue.

Thank you.
Swa StassijnsSwa Stassijns
Hi,

as you can see, that was the first suggestion made by one of your colleagues (Karthikeyan): see first comment on my question. As you can read: that did not help at all... so why should I try this again now? Why would it make a difference now? It seems like we are going in circles here or am I missing some point?

Hello Swa,
We regret for the inconvenience caused.
We have sent you an email with instructions to collect the diagnostic information and analyze this issue.
Please let us know once you have uploaded the info to AVG server.
Thank you.
Swa StassijnsSwa Stassijns
Hi,

yes, and I did everything mentioned in that email: the diagnostic information has been sent to you as requested...last week. I did nog get any response or reaction after that ... none at all... unbelievable. You really keep people busy ... but for what purpose actually? Problem not solved so far...took a lot of my time. Your 'FREE' AVG -version is not free at all if you look at it that way...
Can I still expect some analysis/conclusions based on the diagnostic information that I have sent please??

Swa StassijnsSwa Stassijns
And then... silence from AVG Technologies ... as if I didn't sent any diagnostic information... Nothing... Should I start a new Question??
Lizzy WoodsLizzy Woods
Swa, I had the same issue. The problem for me was solved by a silly Windows 10 setting. AVG needed a restart to complete some process and until that would happen it ate all my CPU power, similar like yours.
However, Windows 10 uses a 'fast startup' that fakes a restart but actually leaves the computer on. Either use a restart or disable the fast boot in Windows 10 (search for disable fast boot windows 10).

That will force a restart on your computer and kill the high resources. I had to do an AVG repair afterwards. Now my system is back up and running normally.

Hope this helps (probably you already have another anti-virus by now :) )

I had this problem too and when I began the process of repairing AVG, I noticed it was showing up twice in Add or Remove Programs.

I uninstalled the oldest one and after a restart, my CPU usage has dropped from 80% to 3% !

Perhaps this can help someone also experiencing high CPU usage
Dmitry -Dmitry -
In my case, there was an AVG Update (to v. 17.4.3014) and after it AVG started to consume enormous CPU resources

Quad-core-CPU at more than 50%:

AVG High CPU

That was awful. I was in the middle of my work when it happened and it annoyed so much, so I had to search for a solution. I've tried to deactivate as much as I could from AVG settings/components and finally the deactivation of 'Settings->Troubleshooting->Enable AVG Self Protection Mode' helped. After that CPU went into normal usage and I've enabled all AVG components again. Even that flag returned back to enabled state, but AVG runs OK now.

I had a couple of problems after AVG Update (17.4.3014), what happened was the older version of AVG was not uninstalled with the update.  My CPU usage was constantly around 99% every time i rebooted, disabling and enabling Self Protection was a temp fix. What happened was the older versoin of AVG was not removed with the update, so there were 2 versions of AVG running on my machine.  I contacted AVG support who advised me to remove an re-install AVG. I had to download 2 removal tools, one for 2016 and 2017. Since i reinstalled everything runs fine, CPU usage is back to normal.

Hello Joshua,

Thank you for your kind post. The solution you have shared will be helpful to most of our customers. We appreciate your time and co-operation. Feel free to contact us for further query regarding AVG.

Ever since my last update (17.4.3014)  AVG is using 75% of my CPU resources.   I have used AVG since 2007 without a problem; now in the last few days it has rendered my computer almost unusable.   My computer is at 75% usage even when it is just sitting idle, with no browsers or windows open.

I'm guessing I may have the same problem as Joshua Levy above.  How do I determine how many versions are running on my computer?  And where do I find the removal tools for 2016 and 2017?

AvinashAvinash (Avast)
Anne,
Please go to control panel, go to Programs & Features, click on Add or remove programs to view the list of programs installed on your PC. Check if you see two 'AVG Protection' entries in that list. If you do, please run AVG remover tool as suggested in this article http://support.avg.com/SupportArticleView?urlname=How-to-uninstall-AVG .
Anne JordanAnne Jordan
(I answered before but my reply seems to have vanished.)

I checked as you advised and found only one version listed under Add/Remove programs.  What now?

Is it correct that avguix.exe (using 67,324K of VM) is running on my computer at the same time AVGUI.exe is running and using 88,512K?

Or that AVGSvc.exe is consuming 152,496K even while avgsvcx.exe is running and using 18,700K?

My computer is still running at 75-100% usage.  It began right after the AVG update and hasn't relented since.
Anne JordanAnne Jordan
I checked as you suggested and see only one.  What now?

Is it correct that avguix.exe (using 67,312K of VM) and AVGUI.exe (using 88,512K) are running at the same time?

Also, the AVGSvc.exe is eating up 152,852K; meanwhile, avgsvcx.exe is using 18,652.   Is it correct that these processes (which appear to be very similar) are running simultaneously?

Anne,
Thank you for getting back to us. If you are a paid user of AVG, I would request you to contact our technical support ( http://avgclick.me/AVGtechnical ) for further help.
Anne JordanAnne Jordan
I am not a paid user.   What now?

And why am I the only person on the page to receive a "if you are a paid user" reply?

I used your free version in good faith, based on your company's reliability/security claims and ten years' experience with the product.   Now, through no fault of my own, AVG has adversely affected my computer as the result of an automatic update.

I would think you have a moral responsibility to help me fix it, rather than to suggest that the only way I can restore my computer to proper working condition is to buy a subscription.
AvinashAvinash (Avast)
Anne,
I am sorry if you were offended. I was meant to inform that you can get personalized chat or call support if you are paid user. I would suggest you to run AVG Clear tool and then remover tool to uninstall AVG completely and reinstall it. Download and run AVG Clear tool: https://share.avg.com/steam/PSP/AVG2017/AVG_Clear.exe. This tool will help with removing antivirus component of AVG 2017 and its traces.

Open tool
User Account control - click "Yes"
Windows safe mode - click "No"
Choose installed version (AVG Free, AVG Internet Security)
Click "Uninstall"
Click "Restart computer".

After restart, run AVG Remover and remove all other supported products and remnants of AVG (ZEN, Framework,...).
Follow the steps in this article http://support.avg.com/SupportArticleView?urlname=How-to-uninstall-AVG to download and run AVG Remover tool.

After you run both tools, click on this link http://files-download.avg.com/inst/mp/Antivirus_Free_1817.exe .

This has occurred on my multiple PCs and laptops on Windows 10, all flavors.  It has done the same to friends and family.  The latest updated to AVG is not compatible with MS Windows 10 and the two are butting heads.  The initial step so that you can actually work on your PC or fix the issue is to go to the Task Manager (alt-control-delete, select Task Manager), do to the Services tab, select Name at the top to order this and search (or just search otherwise) for AVG Antivirus.  Right click and select Stop.

Now keep in mind your Anti-Virus is now not running!
You can go work on figuring out why it is causing you the headache, unistall AVG altogether and pick a new tool, wait for AVG to come out with a new fix, or turn Windows Defender back on.  The choice is yours.

I do not believe it is the tool running two versions.  I beleive whatever this last update AVG pushed out was it is conflicting with the native Windows 10 anti-virus processes.  This is a fix AVG needs to address and is not your fault nor are you running two competing AVG services.

I am also having the same problem of high court usage (100%) since the last AVG update. 97% of the usage is from various combinations of AVG Watchdog Service, AVG Software Analyzer, AVG Service, and AVG Antivirus processes. The list of programs in the Control Panel does show 2 versions of AVG Protection. However, with the CPU usage maxed out, I cannot uninstall the old version via the Control Panel, NOR open a browser to access the troubleshooting tools from AVG!!! My computer is essentially a paperweight now. What can be done to correct the problem? BTW - It would be really helpful if updates didn't create more problems than they solve.

Hello Kelly,

I am sorry for the inconvenience and appreciate your patience in trying to fix the issue. I would suggest you to uninstall AVG old versions completely from your computer using AVG remover tool http://support.avg.com/SupportArticleView?urlname=How-to-uninstall-AVG

Please restart your computer and check the CPU usage. If the issue persist, please contact us with the screenshot http://support.avg.com/SupportArticleView?urlname=How-to-create-a-screenshot of AVG services in the Task manager to assist you further.

Now this **** started happening to me too. Four processes all using 15-20%. No changed made to this PC, no new programs installed. Only thing changed is I allowed AVG to update.

Version 17.5.3021, build 1.201.3.7082. Restarts do not help and neither did repair.

It amazes me that you do not have a debug-tool or in-built reporting that can be used for tracking the issue.

Same problem here. 30+% CPU usage.

Disabling AVG self protection seems to solve the problem, but this is no solution.
I use AVG free 17.8.3036, build number 1.211.3.17155 on windows 10 pro 64 bit version 1709.
When will AVG offer a solution? I had exactly rhe same problem with Avast, that is why i uninstalled Avast, but as both are the same program, I hope we will get an update fast!

Hello AVG Support - I am experiencing the same problem with AVGUI.exe maxing out my CPU utilization on Task Manager.  I'm running AVG Internet Security (paid version) on Windows XP desktop machine.

> I followed the above link to AVG repair, ran it and nothing changed - AVGUI.exe still between 84 - 98 % CPU still at !00%

> I Opened  AAVG Internet Security > menu > settings > troubleshooting > uncheck "Enable AVG Self protection module" > click OK. Then opened Task manager and the CPU usage was still maxed out.

This is a recent occurance.  Any suggesions as to how to resolve this issue?  Not loving AVG at the moment.   Thanks in advance for your feedback.
AvinashAvinash (Avast)
Hello, Kathy.
This could also be caused due to more than one anti virus program is installed on your PC. Please check if you have any other anti virus or firewall program to uninstall it. Let us know if it is a trial or paid version of AVG Internet Security that you use. We'd request to start your own post regarding this so we can collect logs to analyze this issue if necessary.
Kathy KochKathy Koch

Hi Avinash,  Thanks for your quick response.

I am running a paid version of AVG Internet Security.  Also running on this PC is AVG PC Tuneup.
There is no additional firewall programs or anti-virus programs on the PC.

Interestingly, today I've been watching Task Manager and the AVGUI.exe us using zero CPU cycles.  The highest usage is 'System Idle Process'.  What would have cause the AVGUI.exe to intermittently impact the CPU usage after multiple reboots, etc (as desctribed above)?

I'll keep watch on the CPU utilization and post a new update if the problem reoccurs.

Thanks again,... Kathy

Balasubramanian SBalasubramanian S (Avast)
Kathy, we are glad to know that problem doesn't occur now.
If it happens again, we will be able to collect logs and analyze further to identify the root cause.
Keep us informed about the status.

We would like to get more information regarding this.
Do you see this CPU usage when there is any of AVG scan running in the background?
Alfonso SantimoneAlfonso Santimone
Hi Balasubramaian,
nope. AVG isn't scanning anything apparently.
Where can i see what AVG is actually doing?
I noticedd that the CPU usage stays at the same level even if i "stop" AVG.
Alfonso SantimoneAlfonso Santimone
Hi Balasubbramanian,
no, AVG is not scanning anything, as far as i can see. Is there any page where i can see AVG ongoin activity?
BTW if i disable AVG still the AVGSvc.exe uses 12/13% .
Really strange. Before the latest AVG update this don't use to happen.
AvinashAvinash (Avast)
Thank you for confirming, Alfonso.
We'd request to repair AVG (http://support.avg.com/SupportArticleView?urlname=How-to-repair-AVG) to verify the issue.

Dmitry's fix worked for me - got rid of AVG's constant 12% added CPU suck on my system. Granted, this is much less than others' reported 40-90% drain, but it makes a difference. Thanks,
Dmitry.

If that does not work though, disable the "Enable AVG Self protection module" in menu> settings troubleshooting.
Now in the Task Manager, Go to Details Right Click AVGSvc.exe > Set Affinity. Choosing fewer cores will limit AVG with fewer CPU usage.
Now the problem should be fixed. Try undoing the first step to see if it still works.

I found out how to Reduce the CPU Usage, although to be fair it requires a more hands on approach to stay protected....

I Disabled it within the Startup Folder....
THEN I disabled It In msConfig.exe....
And, THEN I Disabled "Self Protection" in AVG Setting...
THEN I Disabled it on Startup in the Task Manager Folder....

This allows you to Game Single Player games, or in High Security Multiplayer Games with Little AVG CPU Usage....
BUT
I will have to let you know, to NOT forget to Re-Enable it when you go back into Google Chrome. If you forget to Re-Enable it Windows Microsoft Virus Defender causes Google Chrome CPU Usage to all of a sudden become the Problem, furthermore you lack protection....

Soooo, You kinda have to be hands on with when to start it up or not TBH XD. I prefer it to 2 FPS games though honestly!
