Hi,
I am just posting here to say that I have EXACTLY the same problem: i.e the new upgraded version of AVG Free on Windows XP Service Pack 3 will continue to say "You are not protected", no matter what I do.
Keen to hear of a fix.

This is also a problem for me.  Searching the internet I see SEVERAL people with the same problem, and your tech support acts as if they don't know about it - telling everyone to perform the same steps that don't work.  Are you ever going to get a fix for this?  I've had AVG for years now, but this is a deal breaker - if you cannot get it fixed then I will have to find something else.

Hello Steve,

I understand this must be upsetting. I would request you to follow the steps in this article http://support.avg.com/SupportArticleView?urlname=How-to-troubleshoot-issues-after-upgrade-to-the-latest-AVG-antivirus-product to reinstall AVG Internet Security by running AVG Clear and AVG Remover tool.

After uninstallation, please use the below offline installer link to install AVG Antivirus free on your computer.

Note: Before starting the installation, please select "Basic protection" to install AVG Free.
For 64 bit OS: http://files-download.avg.com/inst/mp/Antivirus_Free_x64_1818.exe
For 32 bit OS: http://files-download.avg.com/inst/mp/Antivirus_Free_x86_1819.exe

If you face any difficulties, please contact us to escalate the case to the senior technicians.

I tried running AVG Free from an admin account, but it does nothing. AVG Free won't even start up. It just sits there with the "FIX NOW" message.
