aswidsagent.exe

I have C:\Program Files\AVG\Antivirus\aswidsagent.exe running on my laptop (Windows 7) since earlier update. It is hogging most of my memory and everything is running slower than at snail's pace, Is this a genuine AVG program? It wont't let me abort it. If its a virus, why didn't AVG pick it up and how do I remove it?  Thanks

Hello Ray,
We regret for the inconvenience caused. Could you please confirm whether you had installed AVG free or a paid version on your system and also mention your product name to assist further?
Thank you.
Ray FRay F
I'm using the free version. Not sure what product you mean but I'm running WIndows 7 (short) on a Samsung netbook NF110. Up until today's update things weren't too bad.

Hello Ray,

Thank you for providing the screenshot.
Did you perform the reinstallation of the AVG program as suggested by Sarath?
Ray FRay F
I have eventually managed to uninstall some of the AVG components but I still have these two left. I can't uninstall AVG because it says I have to uninstal all of the other bits first. I can't uninstall AVG Protection. Rather than uninstall, it is trying to install and asking for a licence number. So what do I do?
Balasubramanian SBalasubramanian S (Avast)
Thank you for the information, Ray.
Yes, we have to remove the AVG Protection first.
Sorry to know that you are getting issue for uninstalling it.
In this case, please use this remover tool: https://share.avg.com/steam/PSP/AVG2017/AVG_Clear.exe and follow the onscreen instructions to remove the AVG Protection free 2017 version traces.
Once done with this please install AVG Protection free using this link: http://files-download.avg.com/inst/mp/Antivirus_Free_1817.exe .

thanks for that - I eventually managed to clear everything and reinstall - however I started a scan and it has been running for about 15 hours so far and only progressed to 8%

We regret to hear about the inconvenience caused. We suggest you to repair AVG Anti-Virus free to fix this. Once you repair it, start a fresh scan.
Go to Start -> Control Panel.
Note: Click Settings first if Control Panel is not available in the Start menu.
Open (Programs) -> Programs and Features, or Add or Remove Programs.
Select AVG Protection in the list of programs.
Click the Change or Change/Remove button.

Follow the instructions on your screen to complete the installation.
Restart your computer.

So..., I don't see an answer here to Ray's original question, not sure why.

My question:  What is aswidsagent.exe and what does it do?

I also run AVG Free and noticed it show up on the last build in May '17.

The AVAST people are scratching their head about this too, as it also appears on their anti-virus protection.

Look forward to some explaination.  Thanks!

Hello Pepper,
aswidsagent.exe's description is "AVG! Identity Protection Service". aswidsagent.exe is a digitally signed by AVG. Also the AVAST identity protection signature is the same as AVG (aswidsagent.exe). aswidsagent.exe is usually located in the 'C:\Program Files\AVG\Antivirus\aswidsagent.exe'. It's monitor computer application behaviors. Feel free to contact us again if you need any further assistance.
Best regards,
Alok.

Thank you Alok!  It sounds like a critical componant of AVG.  Perhaps it is best to leave it on computer and not try to disable it?

Sincerely,
Eric

now, I have an long SHUTDOWN delay on my Win-XP-SP3 computer, between five and ten minutes ;
I think this is the fault of AsWidsAgent.exe , because  when I survey the shutdown with the task manager , I see only 2 process with a little activity :
AsWidsAgent and LASS
These process continue to READ/WRITE on the disk , because the the Input/output index is going up.
Balasubramanian SBalasubramanian S (Avast)
Hello Zour,

I understand the inconvenience.
Are you using AVG Antivirus free 2017 version installed on your PC?
Jim BJim B
I tried the repair option, and it did not resolve the issue.

Uninstall too forever, since the aswidsAgent was still consuming most of my CPUs.

Eventually I got to the reboot (which lately have also taken forever), and it breezed right thru it !  :-)

It's been a few days now, and it's still working great again.

Hello Jim,

We would like to know whether you have used our tools to remove AVG traces and reinstalled to check the status of CPU usage?
If not, run AVG clear followed by remover tool as mentioned in this article.
NOTE: If there are no AVG programs found, click on 'run anyway' to proceed with the removal.
If you are using AVG antivirus free, refer this article to install it.
Keep us informed about the status.
