Nancy Hightshoe HOW TO UPDATE AVG FREE VIRUS DEFINITIONS
I've used and loved AVG Free for years! It doesn't interfere with any of my other programs!
However, this week, it suddenly disappeared. I downloaded it from the site. And cannot figure out how to update the virus definitions.
In the program before, there was a box to check and I found virus definitions seemed to need to be updated at least once a day.
Now, all I can get is the screen to purchase the full program.

We suggest you to follow the below steps to update the virus definitions in AVG.
You can go to http://www.avg.com/update
Select the update files you need (typically Virus definitions and All necessary modules for your operating system) and download them to a portable media, e.g. a USB flashdisk.
Open your AVG program and then in the menu Options, click Update from directory.
Navigate to the folder where you stored the update files, and click OK.

First, why isn't it simple to update like it was a week ago!! It seems that all this product want to do is sell me the full version (which has caused problems with some of my programs in the past!).
Sadly, these instuctions are not working for me! Have you personally tried them? On this link, it says:
IT IS STRONGLY RECOMMENDED THAT YOU PERFORM ALL UPDATES FROM THE AVG INTERFACE. and
THESE UPDATES SHOULD NOT BE USED FOR AVG ANTI-VIRUS FREE..
My laptop is 64-bit and I even tried downloading that version. Every time I try to open the virus protection to update it, I just get a screen in pink writing telling me that my trial of the full version had expired. (I know! It wasn't a good match for me!)
It also says: "You can also perform updates using the Update now option within the menu that opens after right mouse button clicking over the AVG icon located on the system tray"
That didn't work either!

AVG updates will get installed automatically when you are online.
