AVG won't uninstall

I have AVG Free on my Windows Vista and it updated earlier today. Afterward, I attempted to shred a file and received a message saying it could not do it because my free trial was up. I only have the AVG Free version and it has been on my PC since 2011; I have no idea what the trial version is. After a couple more failed attempts to shred the file I figured that something had gone wrong with the update today and decided to uninstall AVG and then reinstall it later. However, AVG uninstall in Control Panel repeatedly failed with error messages such as (0xe0010058: Access is Denied) and (0xe0010002) Uninstallation failed.
I downloaded the AVG Remover and it uninstalled everything but the 616 MB AVG Protection program.
Is there something else I should do to remove the program so I can do a reinstall?
Would a possible fix be a restore point that was before the update?

We appreciate all your efforts in trying to fix the issue. We apologize for the inconvenience caused. Please try running the AVG Clear https://share.avg.com/steam/PSP/AVG2017/AVG_Clear.exe once. This tool will help with removing antivirus component of AVG 2017 and its traces.
Open tool
User Account control - click "Yes"
Windows safe mode - click "No"
Choose installed version (AVG Free, AVG Internet Security)
Click "Uninstall"
Click "Restart computer"

If issue persists, please attach us the screenshot http://avgclick.me/getscreenshot of the Error message that you get.

Hello James,
We regret the inconvenience caused. We would request you  to remove previously installed program traces of (AVG 2015 or AVG 2014)from your system using AVG Remover tool and then try to reinstall AVG Protection Free.
Note: If you have installed any other conflicting programs like AVAST, NORTON, McAfee or KASPERSKY  try to uninstall it.
Once you have uninstalled from your system, try to follow the steps which mentioned below.

2) Run the downloaded file and follow the onscreen instructions.
3) Restart your PC when the restart option is displayed on the remover tool screen.

Thanks for the reply Aravindh,
I previously downloaded the AVG remover tool after trying the Windows Uninstall. The Remover sucessfully uninstalled  one AVG program file and all shrtcuts, but it would not remove the remaining file titled AVG Protection. However, after receiving your reply I followed your instructions after deleting the Remover tool manually and also removing the Remover tool's download files from the desktop. I then followed your link and downloaded the tool and tried it again. A message informed me that the tool did not find an active AVG product within my system (but the AVG Protection file is still in Programs & Features)  and also gave me the choice to either Exit or Run Anyway. I had received this message before and chosen the Run Anyway button, but decided to give it another chance. This time the tool ran  for a bit over an hour before another message that uninstallation failed and asked for a restart. After the restart, the tool started running automatically, but eventually popped up the following message from AVGUIX.exe-- Application Error: The exception Breakpoint
A breakpoint has been reached
(0x80000003)  occurred in the application at 0x5c9fccd7.
Click on OK to terminate the program.

I clicked on OK and turned off my PC. This morning the AVG Protection file is still there. Do you have further guidance you can offer to remove this file?
