FakeAV.AUQD

Hi,

AVG reported that I have "Trojan horse FakeAV.AUQD" on Notepad.exe.  It also said it was unable to remove it; "Removing of threat has failed. Access is denied".

I scanned with Malwarebytes and nothing was found though.

Any assistance would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Alex

Thank you for providing screenshot Alex,
I see that you're using AVG Free Antivirus 2016 version. In this case, I request you to remove AVG 2016 completely along with any previous traces using the AVG clear tool/AVG Remover tool and then do a fresh installation of AVG Free Antivirus 2017. This will ensure that none of the previous traces of AVG are left on your computer and you have an updated version. (1/2)
Alok KumarAlok Kumar (Avast)
Please download AVG Remover tool (http://download.avg.com/filedir/util/AVG_Remover.exe), run the downloaded file, select all AVG programs and click remove (or click run anyway), please ignore the restart (if AVG remover tool ask for a computer reboot), please download  AVG clear tool (https://share.avg.com/steam/PSP/AVG2017/AVG_Clear.exe), click NO (if it's ask for safe reboot), select AVG Zen box, click on remove. Please reboot your computer once, when AVG Clear tool ask for a computer reboot. After reboot, please follow the instruction (http://support.avg.com/SupportArticleView?urlname=Download-and-install-AVG-AntiVirus-Free) to install AVG Free Antivirus.
Best regards,
Alok.(2/2)

I use a paid for license and have AVG 16.151.8013 on Windows 10 machine that just installed the horrible Creators update.... WHY does this need me to remove this and download a new version so it doesn't find notepad to be a virus?  Why isn't this version fixed?

Steve,
Please be informed that we are performing a major migration from 2016 to 2017 version.
We are performing this has mandatory update and planning to maintain the 2017 as a standard version.
It is not possible to install AVG 2016 version in your PC. The updates for 2016 version will no longer be available.
This is the reason we are performing this as mandatory update and recommend customers to install the latest 2017 version.
Hence please uninstall AVG 2016 as mentioned in this article ( http://avgread.me/1DEtNP0 ) and reinstall AVG 2017 version by going to AVG downloads page (https://www.avg.com/en-us/download ).
Thank you.

How is this an acceptable answer? I am all for needing to get the latest version. But why do older versions incorrectly report a virus?
Abirami ShanmugamAbirami Shanmugam (Avast)
Jeremy,
I completely understand your concern. But the updates for AVG 2016 has been stopped. Hence the virus definition of AVG 2016 will not get updated and that results in false detection. We recommend you to use AVG 2017 for better protection.
Thank you.

I am also being told that I have the fakeav.auqd trojan in Notepad. AVG tells me it cannot remove it, then tells me it HAS removed it, then flags it again when I open Notepad.
Is this a case of AVG mistaking notepad for a virus? That is the message I receive from reading the above thread. I'm using a 2016, purchased version.
Alok KumarAlok Kumar (Avast)

I don't think you realise how people work... they put things like AVG on then leave it...it updates, in my case there is nothing saying that it isn't supported or there is any issue, it is reported as updating a moment ago when I checked i.e. it is showing up to date and yet you can't apparently send updates to it to stop it finding notepad.exe as a virus!

I have had three customers recently move from AVG including two large sites to competitors and don't want to lose any more with all the consequent work in re-organising their sites - I have used AVG personally and on my own business computers for probably a decade or more and many tiny businesses I deal with use your free products until I convince them to buy licenses.

So what is the deal....

1. What is broken about 2016 product, are all pre 2016 products broken too?
2. Why haven't you sent an automatic update to 2017 product out to everyone if 2016 is broken or at least show some message within the app. rather than lots of "green light, everything is OK"
3. Why haven't you notified existing registered paid for users by email that is is needed?
4. Are you seriously going to suggest that anyone who bought your product in 2016 or before uninstalls it, downloads clean up tool, re-downloads new version, digs out their license keys and then reconfigures any settings again?  At the point they uninstall it they will get a helpful little Microsoft message saying there is no Anti-virus and would you like Microsoft to look after it.. at which point they quite likely won't bother putting AVG back on.

It is not acceptable that users need to re-install the apps, or more to the point pay for IT support to remove, clean up and re-install using admin permissions.  It should be designed in way that it can auto update the program aswell as the definitions like every other AV program.

Now the Windows 10 Creators edition is horrible update anyway that broke one of my video adapter drivers, stopped IBM Notes client working properly and false positive for AVG so rolled it back until I have time do fiddle with it but that isn't the point.

Steve, I completely understand your concern. But, AVG 2017 was upgraded automatically for some regions. Moreover, AVG 2017 was built with Avast technology. So, I would request you to follow the steps in this article http://support.avg.com/SupportArticleView?urlname=How-to-troubleshoot-issues-after-upgrade-to-the-latest-AVG-antivirus-product to reinstall AVG Internet Security by running AVG Remover and AVG Clear tool.

If you face any difficulties, please contact us.

Hi Avishai,

Yes! please uninstall AVG 2016 version and install AVG 2017 for better protection against threats and ransomware. I have the same problem as the original poster: fakeav.auqd is flagged as a trojan in notepad.exe. AVG fails to resolve the issue and generates a message that removal failed due to "unable to download original file". I'm running a paid version of AVG Internet Security. I followed the above instructions and uninstalled AVG and ran AVG_Clear.exe. That program ran for over 6 hours and I surmised it had hung, so I rebooted and reinstalled the latest version of AVG. Same thing is happening -- AVG is reporting FakeAV.AUQD in Notepad.exe.
What's up with this? How did this trojan get past AVG to begin with (I have it running at all times)? How do I clear the issue?
Mike

I Have AVG Business Edition with a 15 user licence and have the same Trojan warning. If I am reading this correct, AVG want me to uninstall all 15 installs and reinstall..... is that correct ? That is roughly a 4-5 hour process that needs to be done out of business hours. Surely AVG have an easier option.......

Hello Orkun,
Yes, please contact our business support team (https://support.avg.com/business?l=en), they will help you to fix this issue as soon as possible.

Your proposed solution is not solving the problem.

We have AVG AV for Business v 16.161.8037 installed and getting this same detection of FakeAV.AUQD on notepad.exe

As you suggested, we did the following:
  1. uninstalled AV
  2. downloaded and ran the AVG_remover.exe
  3. downloaded and ran the AVG_clear.exe
  4. downloaded and ran AVG_Antivirus_Business_x64_752
After that, we are still getting the same detection.

Please advise.

Again, this is not acceptable.  I have made change on one PC but know of probably 60-70 people with varying versions of AVG free and paid for and have just finished moving a 100 user license OFF AVG (luckily with users not having admin rights so will need each PC visited with IT time they will have to pay for).  If you want to retain any customers you need to give an AUTOMATIC way to update and stop old versions detecting core OS as a virus!!  Please escalate this as high as needed to get someone to realise what doing this will do to your business - if you have everyone UNINSTALL your product they are temporarily unprotected and will as likely go to a different product than re-install AVG.
Balasubramanian SBalasubramanian S (Avast)
Hello Steve,

The reason we suggested to install the latest 2017 version is because we are planning to make it as a standard version.
We have just received the information that this is a false positive and the fix was released few minutes before.
I request you to perform update of AVG Antivirus once and check whether the issue persists.
Andrew NordbruchAndrew Nordbruch
This is a widespread issue we are seeing this morning across multiple versions of AVG including Business AV and CloudCare. Please release a definitions update to fix it.

Hello Andrew,

We have just received information that this is a false positive and the fix was released few minutes before.
Please update your AVG Antivirus program to get the fix installed.
Thank you.

Hello
I have paid licensing for AVG Internet Security Product.  I was having the FakeAv.AUOQD problem as well.  Base on the information found earlier on this forum, and per the instructions on this forum, I unistalled AVG from my machines and then ran the AVG_Clear in safe mode to remove any and all reminents of AVG.

The version that I see downloadable from my log in session to AVG is :  AVG_Internet_Security_1930.exe
Should I install this version as shown on my Account Log In page?  Or should I install a different version.  Again I am a paying license holder of Internet Security.

Kindly advise of the correct version to download and provide link.  Thanks so much.

If you suspect a false positive, you can validate this by uploading the suspect file to any of these sites
Jotti's virusscan
VirusTotal
VirSCAN
Hybrid-Analysis

Then send AVG the result

Hey, AVG next time run a full regression test on your software on a clean build machine before plauging users with false positives the next time eh?
KarthikeyanKarthikeyan (Foundever)
Hello Craig,

I can understand your concern. We have already escalated this to the developer team and they are working on a permanent fix for this issue. Once an update is released, you will soon be updated through Social post or in this Community.
Dirk KnopDirk Knop

This false positive detection has been fixed with virus database 14698 yesterday noon for AVG 2016 and upwards to our knowledge. Just updating the signatures - which usually is happening automatically in the background - sufficed.
