Start up processes

Hi I recently re-installed Avg free on Windows XP and I noticed a couple processes that run on start up and then remain inactive. One is avuirunnerx.exe and the other is avguirnx.exe .. I notice the file names are similar. I have a screen cap of them in security task manager. They both appear to be signed, though avuirunnerx does not show a name in the left column.

What I would like to know is are these 2 files running on start up normal procedure.

I tried including screen cap, don't think it worked? Screen cap is at http://imgur.com/NHheUrU

Hello Bobby,

Thank you for providing the screenshot.
Did you restart your PC once and then checked whether you have that processes as "None" with AVG folder path?
If not please do check that once and do let us know the status.
This should have happened due to multiple update attempts or installation attempts.

Thanks for your time. Yes, I've re-started the computer numerous times since, avuirunnerx still appears as NONE in security task manager. Here's a screenshot of system config utility and security task manager at start up when the programs are active (shows their sizes).

In the system config utility avuirunnerx and avguirnx appear as the 2 startup programs for avg.

I should explain why I had un-installed and re-installed avg yesterday. Basically I was experimenting.

A few days ago I saw the file 'secure-search-update-0116avz.exe' (inactive) in the security task manager. It was being run using windows scheduler as well as there was an entry of it in the current user registry, in windows/current version/run, after that it listed in the security task manager, inactive.

I was curious what would happen if I removed it from the scheduler and from the registry.

When I did all that and re-started it disappeared from the security task manager but I saw 'Avg ui (re) starter' appear instead.

I restored the 2 schedule entries. I saw secure-search-update-0116avz.exe re-appear in the security task manager.

By then I thought it would be better to uninstall and re-install to undo what I did. I uninstalled by way of control panel/remove programs, and then re-installed.

And now I see what is shown in the screenshot, avuirunnerx as NONE and avguirnx as Avg ui (re) starter..

Hi, I updated my security task manager to current version ..  this version shows a 'name' for each of the 2 processes, a generic 'AVG' for avuirunnerx, and FMW1 for  avguirnx, but only 'None' as a title for avuirunnerx.

I alternately landed up disabling "none" (avuirunnerx) in my start up processes from task manager as i noticed a noticable chunk of my RAM being used when i had the avg newly installed. But as soon as i disabled that process in the start up my RAM dropped back to the usual levels. I met to ask what affect this has on the software and if it is somehow compromising to the protection that i should be expecting.

I am going to jump in cause I need assistance as well.

I am still showing avguirnx on my startup list but I have used the avg removal tool multiple times.  Any assistance on how I can make sure any AVG processes are removed/deleted from my computer?

Thank you!
Balasubramanian SBalasubramanian S (Avast)
Hello J S,

Sorry to know that you still have the AVGUI running even after running the remover tool.
In this case, we need to analyze the log files of AVG for which we have sent the email instructions.
Please check for the email on spam or junk folders if it is not present in the inbox.
