AVG update for virus definitions

there is no update for virus definitions since 1 week now ... according to the AVG homepage the latest version is from aug 14th (15883) ... now my AVGfree says "update necessary" with yellow exclamation mark on "computer", but there is no update !!

does anybody know why AVG didn't update the virus definitions such a long time?

Hi Thomas,

We will help you to get this issue resolved.

Please share us the screenshot (http://support.avg.com/SupportArticleView?urlname=How-to-create-a-screenshot) of the AVG Internet Security/Antivirus program to check and assist you further.

Hi Thomas,

I've found exactly the same problem. It's never happened before but is a bit worrying. Have you managed to post the screenshot yet? I might try what Alan Binch suggests as I thought it might help if AVG realises more than one person is experiencing the problem.
Suzie CSuzie C
In the updates section towards the bottom of the page the latest update available is dated 14 August. Normally, when the exclamation mark appears on the icon the date would be today's.  Not being used to this procedure I was surprised to see my comment disappear and the symbol at the top left of this message appear instead, but when I double clicked on the symbol the web address and comment reappeared in a separate box.

Thank you for providing the screenshots Thomas,
You're using very old version of AVG Antivirus free, which might be the reason for no virus definition updates or delay in updates.
In this case, I request you to remove AVG completely along with any previous traces using the AVG clear tool/AVG Remover tool and then do a fresh installation of AVG Antivirus Free.
Please follow the instruction ( http://support.avg.com/SupportArticleView?urlname=How-to-troubleshoot-issues-after-upgrade-to-the-latest-AVG-antivirus-product ) to run AVG Remover tool and AVG Clear tool.
After the computer reboots, you can follow the instruction to download/install AVG Antivirus free.
Regards,
Alok.

Hello Suzie,
We are here to help you. Let us know the version of your AVG Protection (open AVG Protection > menu > about) program and I also request you to share a screenshot of your AVG Protection (which shows no updates) to proceed further.
Please follow the Alan Binch instruction to attach the screenshot to this community post.

Hello Alok,

Thank you. I thought I'd followed Alan Binch's instruction and successfully attached a screenshot to my earlier message but it seemed to get lost on the way. I'll try again, but the problem seems to be on the web page https://www.avg.com/en-gb/download.prd-gsr which is where I download my updates from. In the list of files available for updating (towards the bottom of the page), under Name, Description, Date, and size, it shows Iavi: 15883  Virus Definitions  August 14, 2018  148MB.

When the exclamation mark appears in the AVG icon at the bottom of my screen - about once a week - I open AVG as I did today and get the screen that Thomas has posted in his screenshot above, but in English not German, stating 'You are not fully protected". Normally when this happens, as I said in the previous paragraph, the webpage contains a version of Iavi with the day's date against it whereas today the date is the same as last week's (14 August).

Would the webpage be affected by which version of AVG I have? At the moment I haven't found the menu option so can't tell you!

Apologies, but as you will have gathered I'm not very good at this sort of thing.

hi alok,

my old AVG version is DEFINITELY not the problem!! my father has a younger version, and he also didn't receive an update since 7 days.

i say it again ... on AVG website https://www.avg.com/de-de/download-update (that's the AVG download center) you can find the information, that the current virus definition database for AVG (namely for ALL versions !!!) is "iavi 15883" from aug 14th.

it seems to me, that AVG didn't provide an update since last tuesday (that's the reason why my AVG says to me by clicking the update button "no update available", because the latest virus definition database in my AVG is this "iavi 15883").

and that's very strange ...
Andre RettigAndre Rettig
I have the same problem. Since today. The program itself performs the update. But the message still says "Computer: Die Datenbank AntiVirus ist veraltet." ("The database AntiVirus is outdated.")

So the update refers to the definition of August 14. I guess a new definition could / would solve the problem.

I wonder that there have been no new definitions for 1 week.

This has nothing to do with user installations! So I would suggest anyone don't jump the gun and start uninstalling and then using removal tools etc.
The issue is AVG have not uploaded any new Virus definitions since the 14 August 2018
Looking at these versions below they were all last updated on 14 August.
Updates AVG Latest which is 2016
Updates AVG 2015
Updates AVG 2014
Updates AVG 2013

Have AVG stopped supporting all these versions without notice?
I update manually as my install just kept failing, so manual update has worked fine for me for a very long time.
Now AVG by not updating these files for manual download are causing a lot of problems.
I don't have the time to uninstall, use a clean tool then reinstall, I'll do it when I have time, not now.

Please offer a solution to the one AVG has broken? (no reinstall advice please)!
Please state where I can do a manual download of Virus definitions updated in the last few days etc Now 21 Auguest 2018
Regards.

Hello All,
I have attached a screenshot of the AVG Internet Security updates page. You will be able to find the latest AVG version updates and it's Virus definitions updates.
We always recommend our customer to allow automatic updates instead of manual updates. We also recommend our users to keep the latest version of AVG Internet Security/AVG Antivirus Free to receive all the updates at first.

Hi Alok,

It is about time you started  actually reading and listening  to what the users on this page are saying.  Instead you are following a script of answers and you are not seeing the picture that is emerging.

We are an AVG reseller and, as per everyone else above, we now have  18 servers running AVG SERVER EDITION  all showing that the AVG Database is outdated.  And today is 23-Aug-2018.

Every single one of those servers shows that the last update is :   14-Aug-2018

And as many posters keep telling you, the AVG website itself shows that the last update is 14-Aug-2018.  And, like all the other posters above, none of these servers do manual updates - it is all automatic updates.

So,  PLEASE,  this time pay attention, realize that there is a problem  ON AVG'S SIDE, and escalate it.  Do not treat everyone as if they are idiots doing something wrong.  We are one of your resellers and it is annoying to see that the AVAST takeover is resulting in this sort of support.

There is a problem :  please DEAL with it.

Hi
I think the issue here is AVG 2016 and below is end of life, I was told by a reseller there was an email saying they (AVG Business anyway) were end of life (& no more Virus Definitions) on 1st of August so I assume the had a 2 week extension.  BUT there is nothing I can find on the internet to back this up.
I would just like to add to this "AVG please extend the Virus Definitions to allow us to update in a orderly fashion".
thomas schraetsthomas schraets
@ian ... that would be very embarassing for AVG ... to stop supporting products overnight without any informations for customers.

but yeah, you could be right ... support for AVG 2014 and below stopped in 2016, so the support for AVG 2015+16 could stop now in 2018.

but like i said, giving no informations about that would be extremely "sad" ... ;o(

Hello All,
We are providing support and updates for the AVG version 2015, 2016, 2017 and 2018 (We no longer support 2014 and below version).
The website https://www.avg.com/de-de/download-update is not being maintained so please ignore the information from the Webpage.
Note: The virus definition should get updated in every 2-3 hours, if automatic updates is enabled. If not, we need log files to analyze the situation.

Thomas,
I have sent you an email, please follow the email instruction to help us with the log files. This information will help us to analyze the situation and provide you with a solution.
Regards,
Alok.
thomas schraetsthomas schraets
hi alok, are you kidding me?

in your email you said "There should not be any problem with virus definition updates on AVG version 2015 or above, if automatic updates is enabled."

do you read the numerous topics in this forum? there are people with these update issues that have either AVG 2015 or 2016, that have either the free version or the paid version (AVG internet security), that uses either automatic updates or manual updates ...

furthermore, you said "The website https://www.avg.com/de-de/download-update is not being maintained so please ignore the information from the Webpage."

what??? this is an official AVG website in the support section that you can reach with 1-2 clicks beginning with the AVG front page. it worked fine for years (until aug 14th) !! as mentioned in another topic, this site was updated daily (partly 2x/3x a day) with current version numbers for virus definitions and link scanner. and you want to tell me/us, that this site is not being maintained overnight?

i can't imagine ...
thomas schraetsthomas schraets
by the way, although i'm using AVGfree 2014 with WIN XP SP2 (and although the support for the 2014 version officialy stopped in december 2016 !!!!!), i was able to receive virus definition updates until aug 14th without any problem.

maybe the support for version 2014 stopped finally exactly now, on august 14th, but along with AVG 2015+2016 which should work in your opinion (but it doesn't !!)? i'm sure that i would be able to receive new updates after aug 14th if there would be new updates available !!

i have a running system i don't want to change anything ...
AvinashAvinash (Avast)
Thomas, we are not sure how AVG 2014 has received virus definitions until Aug 14th but the support has ended for 2014 and earlier versions since Dec 2016. You can refer this article https://support.avg.com/SupportArticleView?l=en&urlname=End-of-support-of-old-AVG-products for more details. We request you to uninstall 2014 version and install latest version of AVG free to receive further assistance.
thomas schraetsthomas schraets
yeah, i know this article ... but it worked fine the last two years as you can see in the screenshots above.

maybe my AVG 2014 is now "dead" (concerning updates), but then AVG 2015, 2016 and "latest version" seem to be dead, too !! or can you explain why there are no new virus definitions since aug 14th for AVG 2015, for AVG 2016, for AVG "latest version" ??? why do have people with AVG 2015+2016 (free + paid) exactly the same problem like me?

i think i said it before ... i don't want to install the latest version, and i can't install the latest version because of WIN XP SP2. and even this i say again ... if there would be new updates available (since Iavi 15883 from aug 14th) i'm 100% sure that my ancient AVG 2014 would receive these updates as it did until last week tuesday.

finally i want to say ... alok told me: "There should not be any problem with virus definition updates on AVG version 2015 or above, if automatic updates is enabled." if you would read several topics in this forum, then you would see that this is not true !!!

AvinashAvinash (Avast)
Yes, Thomas.
We are already collecting diagnostic logs from users with AVG 2015 and later versions to analyze the root cause of this behavior. But we can not promise anything about AVG 2014 version since it has reached end of life.
Bruce CampbellBruce Campbell
The company itself is trying to force us to update to U.I. version 18.x.x.x.x which is causing another user here problems with their exemptions, which is exactly what I was worrying about. They are denying updated definitions to users of v16 [me] or v17 or older, which is no way to run a company.
Bruce CampbellBruce Campbell
In addendum, this frustration with the so-called gurus being ignorant of the company forcing yet another User Interface change, one that is less usefull with each generation. I use MalwareBytes as a backup, but now considering using it full time as they don't give me this kind of grief I'm considering switching to it full time, along with Spybot's expanded set of uses.
AvinashAvinash (Avast)
Bruce, we are sorry to hear about that. Please note that we are not denying you the latest definition because you are using 2016 version. There will also be some new features included in a new version of AVG apart from UI changes. So we always recommend you to use the latest version of AVG.

For my situation, the computer I am using AVG with is offiline (not connected to the internet) for security reasons.  I update the virus definitions each week by going to the manual download page (https://www.avg.com/en-ww/download-update) to downlaod the latest virus definitions file.  As others have stated, the date of the definition file on that site is 14 August 2018.  If that site is not going to be maintained from now on, then I will be forced to change to another antivirus provider.  I'm sure there are many other users that are in my situation that need to be able to manually update their computers.  I would ask that AVG strongly consider continuing to update the download-update site.

Thank you

Hello Scott,
We regret the inconvenience caused. We do not have option to update the latest version of AVG protection using offline installer also I’m afraid that AVG has already stopped releasing updates for AVG 2015 & AVG 2016 version.
May I know the AVG protection version installed on your computer? To check this open AVG Protection > Menu/option > about.

Alok,

I am using 2015.  This computer cannot be connected to the internet so it sounds like I will not be able to upgrade to 2018 or even I could, I would not be able to manually download the latest virus definition file to load onto this computer.  I guess I will begin my search for a new provider.

Thanks

To get the latest updates, it is necessary to install the latest version by removing the old one and the offline update method will not be available with the latest version.
Thanks.

Damn, I was using the AVG Rescue CD to scan my computer outside of Windows so no rootkit could affect the scan. I will now need to find another tool to scan my computer outside of Windows.

I have been manually updating virus definitions for probably close to 2 years. Automatic update stopped working. After phoning technical support back then, I was informed that XP was no longer supported. There was no notification about this. So I found the updates on AVG website and started doing them manually every time the yellow triangle appeared. It's smart enough to know that the definitions are out of date, but not smart enough to go get them, because they're forcing you to upgrade from XP. Fine, I'll just do it manually. Then suddenly, again without any notice whatsoever, AVG stopped posting definition updates and the last one was August 14, 2018. There was briefly one on that site I believe for August 21, but when the yellow triangle appeared again, the August 21 update was gone and it was back to the August 14 one.

I just want to say that this is no way to deal with your customers. Blast out an email telling us about these changes. Letting everything break for your users and forcing them to dig around trying to figure out what happened is no way to run a company.
Balasubramanian SBalasubramanian S (Avast)
Sylvian, instead of using our AVG rescue CD to scan at the startup of Windows, you can use "boot time scan" feature which is available in our latest version.
Open AVG Antivirus free/Internet Security interface. Click on "Gear Icon" available near "scan computer" button.
You can find the boot time scan in the scan settings window. This scan will be advanced and detect rootkits too.
Balasubramanian SBalasubramanian S (Avast)
Hi Kevin,

It looks like there is a misunderstanding. Our remote support is actually no longer available for Windows XP and the updates for old version are stopped.
Hence, if you are using the old version, it is recommended to remove it for installing the latest version as we have made a major change in the program engine.
The latest version doesn't have a option to install offline updates from the directory and the last offline update that was released is the same date 14th August 2018 that you mentioned above.
If you are using the old version, proceed to uninstall it as mentioned in this http://avgread.me/1DEtNP0 article.
If you are using AVG Antivirus free, install its latest version as mentioned in this https://goo.gl/LYUXfg article and it is compatible with Windows XP SP3 operating system.
Feel free to contact us if you need further help.

This means we cannot use AVG in industrial control systems.  As per standard security practices for control systems, we cannot have a system connected to internet within ICS. Any better solution AVG is planning to release?
KarthikeyanKarthikeyan (Foundever)
AVG needs an active Internet connection for the program to work fine.

We do not have a program which can be used offline.

In this case, you can search online for an alternate software that works offline.
