AVG Web TuneUp cache. take up all free diskspace in windows10
After being a satisfied user for years, i am now faced with having to de-install the AVG product. And even then issues still remain. :-(
I de-installed al the products, but i found that the Cach in Windows_ie_ac_001 for AVG Web TuneUp fills up all the free space on my drive,. I don't have any AVG products installed anymore, unfortunately. I deleted the total cache for the second time, but it wel return again. Plz help
total path is "C:\Users\Username\AppData\Local\Packages\Windows_ie_ac_001\AC\AVG Web TuneUp

finally got it cleaned now. 1. extra checks done on the extentions in webbrowsers. 2. AVG Web TuneUp dir in program file delete. it was still full with the installtion 3. run cc cleaner 4. Delete the cache involved.
I do see a directory left in Users\User\Appdata\Local\AVG Web TuneUp
i am having the same problem. AVG web tuneup sucked down over 200gb of data in a "cache" file. Quickly looking at it, it appears to duplicating all of my existing folders. The issue is you cant uninstall the program via Programs/features. It looks like it uninstalls but doesnt. Then I used the AVG remover tool and rebooted and it still was installed. I had to use Force Uninstall in the Revo Uninstaller application. This is just nuts. How can you push out a product you cant uninstall and eats up your hard drive space? This isnt a tuneup its a debacle of a product that destroys your hard drive space
Same experience. Uninstaller not doing its job. Never wanted Web tuneup anyway, but somewhere it sneaked in. AVG Better provide open solution instead of mailing individuals.

It's not so easy -to delete these folders... I was need to stop my AVG and kill the processes of TuneUp. It was in 3 folders: both of Programs and hidden one c:\users\...\windows_ie_ac_001\ac\. Do you know, how it looks?? Like matrioshka (babooshka)!!!! Folder cache consists ALL folders from my disk C, includes users\username\appdata... And so on, endless!!! Steven King smokes in the corner...
I am not the most computer saavy, but I do want to take care of deleting this from my computer. COMPLETELY. Is there a step by step that will help me TOTALLY kill TuneUp so it will no longer be in a folder cache? I do not have Windows 10 yet and am still operating in Windows 8.
Same problem here! Built a brand new pc and not only did this program fill an intire 1TB hardrive in a few days but also made it VERY VERY slow... i have been a long user of AVG antivirus and this realy dissapoints me.. :/ FIX IT!
Having same problem as anyone else, cache folder takes up as much space as possible, have tried manually deleting it and it comes back, even tried force uninstall on it with Revo uninstaller and it still came back, even though Revo cant detect AVG anywhere on mycomputer

I have the same problem. It WILL NOT uninstall. I'm using Windows 10, so your instructions you post aren't up-to-date. This is garbage that we need to go through all this work and a fix has yet to be sent out. I spent hours trying to find the problem then when I did, I "uninstalled" then deleted the entire file (300GB) which took an hour. And it did nothing it was all still there. These are hours and hours of time people cannot get back. Please give us instructions that we can use!
I'm having the same problem. I used Revo to uninstall, deleted the folder and now it's back! I am not happy. Seriously considering switching to a different virus protector.
Ok guys I found a solution - use IObit uninstaller. It will take you through a standard uninstall process, which appears to be hidden and take you to that annoying page where it asks you to use "Add/Remove programs" which doesn't work. Remember to remove web tune up from your extensions! IObit uninstaller also asks if you want to remove residual files. Removing these residual files will free up your hard drive.
P.S. F U avg development team! where I come avg is an abbreviation for average. There is nothing about this software that is average.
I used IObit to uninstall AVG Web TuneUp. It uninstalled the program but didn't get rid of the residual files. I ended up doing that manually and it freed up a lot of space. Unfortunately, the hard drive is still slowly being filled up with more residual files. While there's a lot more space than before, I hope there's still a permanent fix to this problem.

I found out about this today, my HDD is 440gb total and before this issue the normal space left was around 197gb because the C drive is used by my wife and me. but this morning i noticed that i only had 84gb left and almost all day ive been from website to website trying to find a solution and it came to my attention after using wiztree that this folder hard a bunch of replicated files and it came from the avg web tune up, i DIDNT and have NEVER downloaded that crap, all eversince I had run into AVG products all ive used was their FREE avg antivirues version...nothing less, nothing more but this crappy software somehow it got into my chrome web browser.
i managed to disable it seeing some of the recomendations on here but on the other hand i was forced to DELETE any AVG web tune up folder from the REGEDIT keys directories and deleting the folder files with wiztree. i had to do both for current_user/software and local_machine as well and just to make sure after that Ccleaner to delete any registry left from that crap. I certainly hope you get a fix for this in a LESS complicated way because honestly Ive never been this frustrated with my computer since I BARELY use it from time to time and i come to this awful experience with your software. i just hope the free anti virus version doesnt come up with any other sneaky thing like this 'cause be sure I'll end up EXTERMINATING the anti virus as well from my PC, cellphones and any other device that I have them installed.

I noticed the same issue. Something sucked up my 1TB HDD in one day. Following some forums online, I was able to uninstall AVG Web Tuneup by deleting the extensions from Google Chrome. Then I used TreeSize to detect the file in each user folder to delete the AVG related files, it is hard to miss as it's huge in size. My computer can finally breath.
FYI, right after I uninstalled the AVG webtune up, I got a notification to enable AVG tuneup for security. I believe I seen similar noticaiton a couple of days ago, which seems to have caused all this. If you wish not to enable it, make sure to click the greyed out hard to see DECLINE button on the left side of the notificaiton windows.

I have never accepted to install Web Tuneup. Installing apps behind my back is a stratgery you could expect from virus makers. All my trust in your products are forever gone.

Due to this issue, i also uninstalled ALL AVG products. Sadly this is goodbye to AVG for some time. The fact that this extra unwanted programm sneaked in, causes a serious trust issue.

Not good enough AVG! NOT GOOD ENOUGH! I wasted so much time trying to solve this problem. It got to the point that I could not even save a word document. I am now behind in work as a result of it. Brian Wilk's suggestion is the only one that works at the moment. Luckily Revo Uninstaller has a 30 day trial. For those of you choosing this option 1 Uninstall with Revo 2 Delete the AVG Web TuneUp folder in (C:\Users\user name\AppData\Local\Packages\windows_ie_ac_001\AC 3 Restart 4 Delete folder again. This should do it.
Had the same problem. Deleted AVG Web TuneUp using Revo free trial and John Healy's instuctions above. Got back over 5ooGB. This is ridiculous and unacceptable. Always reccomended AVG and gt Zen on all my devices but would really reconsider in the future. Not happy.
1) After all the complicated crap it took me to set up this damn account just to comment this almost made it not worth it. 2) Staff, as much as you're trying to help, stop repeating the same thing over and over again when it obviously doesn't work.
So after noticing my 3TB HDD go from 2.1TB free to 2.14GB free, I spent 4 hours going through every folder, right clicking and looking at propertiest until I found it. Why the absolute fuck would AVG add this in? And to have it install Web TuneUp automatically? No thanks. Uninstalling and moving elsewhere for AntiVirus. This is a complete joke. I feel I can speak for everyone here when I say that this is over the line. Right now as I'm typing this, I'm watching the system calculate the folder size and it's only 20-30 seconds or so at 317GB. So if this is what AVG is going to do to customers, I'm going to start recommending elsewhere. Also, why sent instructions in an email? Make the damn information public next time so more people can solve it without spending their time writing a massive complain paragraph (oh wait...). AVG, want my advice? Do something good and fix this product for those who wish to remain with you. I'm off elsewhere.

Same problem here, it took me a long time to actually realise what was causing my HDD to get filled up with over 100GB of data in a little over a day... me as an advanced user if I may say.
Now imagine how much money ordinary people will have to spend paying different PC repair/support shops to resolve this problem, since the computer becomes literally useless when it gets down to 0MB free space on the hard drive... And the best thing is, I know for sure I never even agreed to download any part of AVG PC Tuneup, since I had a bad experience with it in the past. This was done automatically without my approval, probably through one of the AVG updates.
I bet you can assign hundreds of thousands dollars that your customers will have to spend, not by their choice or mistake. I really look forward to see what your "senior" team will come up with.
Of course same problem here. Taking a step back I wonder whether there would have been a more effective procedure to lose so many loyal users that quickly. My advice, and I guess of many others, if you want to save some AVG reputation, publish asap (and then I mean hours not days) a plan or roadmap how you deal with this issue. Explain also how it could get so far, why web tune-up cannot be deinstalled etc. just to rebuild confidence. Not just by seniors but by your CEO. I.e. maximum escalation now.

Yes, I have done the same as per instructions before you guys posted them. After that it was fine. It looks like the problem is when AVG Web TuneUp is downloaded by itself but not actually installed by the user. I tested it again by actually downloading the program and installing it, and had no problems.
I did a test on a virtual system, installed Win 8.1, downloaded AVG Free, performed all the updates and waited. Soon after I noticed AVG Web TuneUP was downloaded, but I never confirmed anything to install. After that the problems began, disk space getting eaten up fast.
Call it irony or not, if you ask me it's a slap into the face of whoever decided to push this to all the users as a "forceware" program, bypassing user confirmation to install it. I just hope it is not AVG's stretegy for the future, I've been using AVG as far as I can remember practically.

Ditto on this issue for me as well. May as well Add every other single download you have had recently as ALL of us are going to have this issue. We have all trusted AVG for our anti-virus protection for may years. Anyone can have a fubar release at some point and I will likely still use AVG after you get this ironed out. I have no idea how a program called "AVG Web TuneUp" can possibly be any sort of tune-up when it does exactly the opposite. It's quite ironic. Send us all an e-mail whe it's fixed, I am sure that most of us will be happy to re-install AVG and enjoy the high quality protection that we have come to rely on.

AVG Web Tuneup took 1.9 TB of space on my new hard drive within 2 days and rendered my PC useless. I could not even open a file due to my hard drive being overrun by AVG Web Tuneup. AND I cannot get it to uninstall. After 2 days of detective work to even figure out what the problem is, I looked on your support page and the initial response to people with the same problem as me was "AVG web tune up will not copy or fill the disk space." That is false; AVG Web Tuneup DOES COPY ALL THE FILES AND FILLS UP YOUR HARD DRIVE SPACE COMPLETELY. Another page of instructions involve having folks manually delete a file that is essentially an entire copy of their hard drive. Since it tells me a file that size cannot be shredded, this seems like a security issue.. not to mention it takes HOURS... and then comes back again!!!! Furthermore, the instructions provide no help in how to uninstall the software after the normal ways of uninstalling fail. Then another link your staff provides just goes to a general page of general support stuff - nothing to do with this issue. I am so frustrated, lost 3 days of work trying to fix my computer and have had to delete all folders related to AVG in an effort to get Web Tuneup to delete.
My suggestion is that AVG add a warning notice about this issue on both the web page for AVG Web Tuneup AND on the window that pops up on users' computers suggesting that they download AVG Web Tuneup. I frankly am surprised that no notice yet exists and that your customers have to search out the problem and then solutions on their own. It would be nice if your senior level support staff could answer this issue and help everyone in a more timely manner.

So here I go again, trying again to delete AVG Web Tuneup and all the 1.9 TB of files it keeps recopying over and over and over. I look forward to your senior level response to this overwhelming issue.
I should add that I never added the extension to any of my browsers. I just cannot get AVG Web Tuneup to uninstall from the Programs/Features in Control Panel. And because I cannot get it to uninstall, it keeps copying all the files on my hard drive in that cach folder at "C:\Users\Username\AppData\Local\Packages\Windows_ie_ac_001\AC\AVGWeb Tune Up It copied 1.9 TB of data and no matter how many times I delete that data, it comes back.
My friend brought me a Windows 8 tablet and they have the same problem. I work in IT and have just spent an hour finding out the same thing, that the AVG Web Tuneup folder is taking 30GB of space. I'm now deleting it and will uninstall Tuneup. Don't know why it does this, but looks like a solution is needed from AVG.

Have used AVG for quite some time now, and was always satisfied before. But about a week or ten days ago, I noticed my 1 TB HD was running dangerously low on space-- unusual, because my wife and I really don't do much; a few games, some documents, and pics-- between the both of us, I'd say we're usually <300GB. When I first noticed the space running low, I deleted some old games, did a disk cleanup, etc.-- all the "usual steps" to free up space. I was able to clear up about 100GB but still only had about 100GB of useable space (out of 931).
Then last night, I was alarmed to discover that I had ZERO disk space. Rushed to google to research what on earth could be taking up all this room, because neither of us have downloaded a single thing since I last cleaned up. Lots of support articles later, and no resolution. As other users mentioned, I eventually went through both profiles, folder by folder, and eventually found the AVG Web Tune Up folder (in users>username>appdata>local>>packages>Windows_ie_ac_001.
It was taking up an astounding 630GB! As mentioned by other users, the contents of the folder had essentially copied (and then re-copied and recopied, I suspect) virtually EVERYTHING on my hard-drive.
I've not ever had this problem with AVG webtune up before-- In fact, as indicated by others, I didn't even know that I *had* it (it must have installed side by side with AVG anti-virus). And the problem started less than two weeks ago, so it must have been some problem with an update or something.
But AVG, PLEASE acknowledge this issue. I see that lots and lots of users are posting here, all having this issue at the same time. SOMETHING is wrong with AVG web tune up.
Thankfully, I succesfully uninstalled ALL AVG software from my PC last night (didn't need any special software, just uninstalled via programs in control panel), and deleted the problem folder. When I get home, I'll double check to make sure no traces are left, but the PC was working fine last night after the delete-- running a hell of a lot smoother than it has been, and with almost 700GB more space than it had been.
At risk of belaboring the point-- I'm sure you understand not just how utterly useless, but also how furstrating and even dangerous this bug is. I won't be using your software again any time soon, at least not until there's a well-documented fix. Which is a shame, because until now, you've fit the bill pretty well. But this bug is absolutely catastrophic and is a good way to ruin somebody's rig.

If I follow the step to remove the Web Tune Up application and manually remove the cache directory, what's preventing this issue from happening again? The first time is bad enough. Should I uninstall AVG completely and switch to another anti virus? Also, is there any tracking system I can follow to see if and when this issue gets fixed?

I'm experiencing the same problem. I have deleted the folder and the folder is recreated again. the AVG solution is only "SORRY" nothing else!!!!! how come the best antivirus become the best in distributing bug!!! I bet the final sollution is reinstall our notebook and again AVG will only say sorry without any sollution.

The only solution that worked for me is deleting vproc.exe in C:\Program Files (x86)\AVG Web TuneUp This is the process which is constantly recreating data in the windows_ie_ac_001 folder. I tried several normal approaches to uninstalling AVG Web TuneUp and nothing worked. The uninstaller just doesn't run. Not even with AVG Remover. I never wanted to use TuneUp anyway, so I don't care if it doesn't work at all.
In fact, i have deleted all AVG software from my machine.
I tried to use iobit uninstaller and manualy delete the folder and finally it's working on my notebook (windows 10 home edition). Others should try this sollution
If even your UNINSTALL program doesn't work after deleting all the unnessary files (witch took several hours for deleting 900GB) I hope you will furnish very soon a solution to delete taht malfunctioning program. I lost already several hours of my time because of that. I intended to sign in again for a registrated version of AVG but after what I was going through I think AVG will not be a good choice. This is horseshit - I've been dealing with this issue for two weeks and I can't get rid of this fucking software that I never even installed in the first place.
How do I stop this virus and get rid of it once and for all? And don't tell me its not a virus cause what kind of fucking program caches a whole disk like this?

Well this was a giant pain at a very inconvenient time. Hours of my life have wasted tracking down this problem that paralyzed my computer. My wife was frustrated as she tried to work on holiday pictures for presents as we tried and tried to empty our computer of superfluous files. Then it was getting rid of stuff we wanted to keep.
I didn't have time to check it out as this is a busy time of year for me, but when the computer stopped working entirely I had no choice but to take an evening off work - not to spend relaxing with my family, but tracking down this bug, caused by a piece of your software which I DID NOT WANT INSTALLED OR OPERATIONAL on my computer.
I've been a loyal AVG user for a long, long time. I've installed it on many family and friends' computers. I've told everyone I know it's the best option in virus protection. I'm very upset at how much your software disrupted our life at probably the absolute most incovenient time.

I've got it uninstalled - my computer was just so bogged down by it that it took an hour to uninstall.
My problem was more how long it took to find the problem, and my dismay at your program being the source, especially since I chose NOT to activate web tuneup.

Our trust is gone. 15 days from topic start, no decent solution yet, on a HUGE issue The only solution is a de-install and manual deletion. AVG Web TuneUp won't uninstall, no error messages. How do I get rid of this uninvited piece of software? Why aren't you telling people to disable VProtect from starting up then delete the cache? Why aren't you doing anything to help us get rid of "Web TuneUp"?

Amazing what you are referring to as a solution in the links (dissappeared?) as the real solution turned out to be quiet simple: - clear the messed up directory - stop the AVGprot service (or whatever it is called) - Remove AVG web tune up
Unbelievable that the highest priority means more than a week searching in your senior development team, while it must be obvious what update must have caused this (how about a rollback?).
Allthough it is Christmas you should be working around the clock to fix this. I hope in favour of your reputation, you really speed up a solution, and learn how to write solution articles!

As someone mentioned above, I can't imagine how many frustrated people are out there that can't find the source of the problem and have absloutely no idea why their machine is no longer functioning.
I've made sure to let all my friends on FB to delete AVG and I recommend everyone to try a different software.
This is so unacceptable its beyond belief that you can't move fast enough to fix this, let alone post a warning to all your users to notifiy of them of the problem.

First of all this problem was a pain in the ass. The only reason I found out is because I questioned why my computer was running so slow. I went to see if I could delete some trash and temp files from disc cleanup when I found this mess:
First of all, good luck finding the culprit with windows file explorer. It's like a secret hidden folder that eludes you. What I did was downloaded WinDirStat, a program that shows you what programs/files are taking the most space. http://www.fosshub.com/WinDirStat.html Sure enough, it was the AVG web tune up (which I had already deleted in full along with all AVG products and software via the program IObit Uninstaller). To be exact, my folder (only one of two users on the computer) had 530GB of useless duplicating files under 'windows_ie_ac_001' --> AC --> AVG Web Tuneup. When you open the pathway towards the most space consumption on WinDirStat you can right click and delete the culprit file. It looked like this going from C: --> Users --> your name --> so forth as below
It took me about an hour ot two to fully delete all the files. Also there were two pathways for this, one for me as a user and one for the other user on the computer. In total it deleted about 700GB. I have still yet to find out if it will continue duplicating but in the last half hour I don't see any increase in space consumption. Though again, I did delete all AVG products completely before this. Now my end product: Thank god. My assumption is that this is some sort of virus within an anti-virus program which is inordinately frustrating. Hopefully a permanent fix will come out otherwise there's no way I would download AVG again. For now I guess I'm on the hunt for a new free program. Any suggestions are appreciated.

As we suggested earlier this is the issue with our AVG Web tuneup and we have already escalated this to our developers team and they are working on this to fix it. In the next update this will get fixed and the only suggestion we give to our customer to delete those cache files manually.
I have also had the same problem as the many users above. I have wasted hours on this before finally getting rid of the awful application using IObig Unistaller. I have also deleted all other AVG products and moved to another supplier and will not use AVG again. What a nightmare, don't you test your products!

done as sugested & deleted folder in C:\Users\username\AppData\Local\Packages\windows_ie_ac_001\AC. there is still a cache folder containg 15gb which keeps failing to delete.

If you have successfully uninstalled the AVG web tuneup you shouldn't get back the cache files on the Web tuneup folder. Are you sure that the cache files are on the web tuneup folder?
Summary of findings: AVG Web Tuneup has caused the issue as described. The methods for uninstalling it or killing its processes have been varied. Where there seems to have been a support article for this issue, it has been removed or never worked, now returning a list of search results. It is also not available via the Wayback Machine archive. Based on this thread alone, this issue has been present for at least approximately one month (before normal users stopped posting here), during which affected computers would run out of space with no detailed explanation or fix beyond "uninstall AVG Web TuneUp [if you can]" and being told that the issue was escalated to a senior team.

Multiple users on this thread have made it quite clear that they didn't want AVG Web TuneUp or its ill effects. After having 3 of you (Aravind, Balasubramanian, Kishore) repeatedly tell people that the issue was escalated, what became of this issue? Did your "developers" have a good F-ing reason why this suspicious program was copying files around users' hard drives and how they managed to end up with a bug that would result in the depletion of free space? Do your developers and management understand the effects of an operating system and other applications trying to run on a disk with 0 space for any period of time? This thread seems to have lasted a month before normal users stopped adding to it. How has the "get back your trust again" part of your claim been progressing?

Balasubramanian - It was described earlier that "just" deleting the cache files is pointless when you have a stupid process intent on re-copying them (recursively?) back to the user's profile folder. "Simon S" points this out rather well.
Alan Binch - There are times when profanity, vulgarity, obscenity, and being all-around unpleasant are somewhat appropriate, such as when confronted by an unusable computer, data loss (potential or actual), and supposed security software acting like malware. While identifying you individually is not the goal, I am identifying "Guru" by account display name and signature who contribute to the "support" of AVG. Additionally, for "Don't forget that the Xmas / New Year hols period is approaching." - I don't care if it's a religious holiday, the CEO's picnic, or time for a mass suicide ritual of failed programmers... if someone made a giant F-up that involves the degradation or potential destruction of users' computers and their work/property stored therein, that someone should be fixing it or getting help to do so.

There seems to be no explanation of vproc.exe from Pilif in this post. - the only other reference I could find is https://support.avg.com/answers?id=906b00000008tdzAAA where Avinash tells someone to go delete it and Balasubramanian then asks the user why he is looking for that file AFTER SOMEONE IN SUPPORT told him to go delete it.
When your software needs its own, specialized remover tool (ex. Balasubramanian's link to filedir/util/AVG_Remover.exe), you have probably done something wrong and may be in malware territory.

2. AVG Web TuneUp dir in program file delete. it was still full with the installtion
3. run cc cleaner
4. Delete the cache involved.

The issue is you cant uninstall the program via Programs/features. It looks like it uninstalls but doesnt. Then I used the AVG remover tool and rebooted and it still was installed. I had to use Force Uninstall in the Revo Uninstaller application. This is just nuts. How can you push out a product you cant uninstall and eats up your hard drive space?
This isnt a tuneup its a debacle of a product that destroys your hard drive space

i managed to disable it seeing some of the recomendations on here but on the other hand i was forced to DELETE any AVG web tune up folder from the REGEDIT keys directories and deleting the folder files with wiztree. i had to do both for current_user/software and local_machine as well and just to make sure after that Ccleaner to delete any registry left from that crap. I certainly hope you get a fix for this in a LESS complicated way because honestly Ive never been this frustrated with my computer since I BARELY use it from time to time and i come to this awful experience with your software. i just hope the free anti virus version doesnt come up with any other sneaky thing like this 'cause be sure I'll end up EXTERMINATING the anti virus as well from my PC, cellphones and any other device that I have them installed.

FYI, right after I uninstalled the AVG webtune up, I got a notification to enable AVG tuneup for security. I believe I seen similar noticaiton a couple of days ago, which seems to have caused all this. If you wish not to enable it, make sure to click the greyed out hard to see DECLINE button on the left side of the notificaiton windows.

Ok, let me just get a few things straight.
1) After all the complicated crap it took me to set up this damn account just to comment this almost made it not worth it.
2) Staff, as much as you're trying to help, stop repeating the same thing over and over again when it obviously doesn't work.
So after noticing my 3TB HDD go from 2.1TB free to 2.14GB free, I spent 4 hours going through every folder, right clicking and looking at propertiest until I found it.
Why the absolute fuck would AVG add this in? And to have it install Web TuneUp automatically?
No thanks. Uninstalling and moving elsewhere for AntiVirus. This is a complete joke.
I feel I can speak for everyone here when I say that this is over the line. Right now as I'm typing this, I'm watching the system calculate the folder size and it's only 20-30 seconds or so at 317GB.
So if this is what AVG is going to do to customers, I'm going to start recommending elsewhere.
Also, why sent instructions in an email? Make the damn information public next time so more people can solve it without spending their time writing a massive complain paragraph (oh wait...).
AVG, want my advice? Do something good and fix this product for those who wish to remain with you. I'm off elsewhere.

Same problem here, it took me a long time to actually realise what was causing my HDD to get filled up with over 100GB of data in a little over a day... me as an advanced user if I may say.
Now imagine how much money ordinary people will have to spend paying different PC repair/support shops to resolve this problem, since the computer becomes literally useless when it gets down to 0MB free space on the hard drive... And the best thing is, I know for sure I never even agreed to download any part of AVG PC Tuneup, since I had a bad experience with it in the past. This was done automatically without my approval, probably through one of the AVG updates.
I bet you can assign hundreds of thousands dollars that your customers will have to spend, not by their choice or mistake. I really look forward to see what your "senior" team will come up with.
Taking a step back I wonder whether there would have been a more effective procedure to lose so many loyal users that quickly.
My advice, and I guess of many others, if you want to save some AVG reputation, publish asap (and then I mean hours not days) a plan or roadmap how you deal with this issue. Explain also how it could get so far, why web tune-up cannot be deinstalled etc. just to rebuild confidence. Not just by seniors but by your CEO. I.e. maximum escalation now.

It looks like the problem is when AVG Web TuneUp is downloaded by itself but not actually installed by the user. I tested it again by actually downloading the program and installing it, and had no problems.
I did a test on a virtual system, installed Win 8.1, downloaded AVG Free, performed all the updates and waited. Soon after I noticed AVG Web TuneUP was downloaded, but I never confirmed anything to install. After that the problems began, disk space getting eaten up fast.
Call it irony or not, if you ask me it's a slap into the face of whoever decided to push this to all the users as a "forceware" program, bypassing user confirmation to install it. I just hope it is not AVG's stretegy for the future, I've been using AVG as far as I can remember practically.

My suggestion is that AVG add a warning notice about this issue on both the web page for AVG Web Tuneup AND on the window that pops up on users' computers suggesting that they download AVG Web Tuneup. I frankly am surprised that no notice yet exists and that your customers have to search out the problem and then solutions on their own. It would be nice if your senior level support staff could answer this issue and help everyone in a more timely manner.
But the absolute worse part of this whole issue is, as Denal Kadiric says above,: "Now imagine how much money ordinary people will have to spend paying different PC repair/support shops to resolve this problem, since the computer becomes literally useless when it gets down to 0MB free space on the hard drive..." All of us taking time to comment here are obviously somewhat PC savvy. So here I go again, trying again to delete AVG Web Tuneup and all the 1.9 TB of files it keeps recopying over and over and over. I look forward to your senior level response to this overwhelming issue.
I should add that I never added the extension to any of my browsers. I just cannot get AVG Web Tuneup to uninstall from the Programs/Features in Control Panel. And because I cannot get it to uninstall, it keeps copying all the files on my hard drive in that cach folder at "C:\Users\Username\AppData\Local\Packages\Windows_ie_ac_001\AC\AVGWeb Tune Up
It copied 1.9 TB of data and no matter how many times I delete that data, it comes back.

My friend brought me a Windows 8 tablet and they have the same problem. I work in IT and have just spent an hour finding out the same thing, that the AVG Web Tuneup folder is taking 30GB of space. I'm now deleting it and will uninstall Tuneup. Don't know why it does this, but looks like a solution is needed from AVG.

Have used AVG for quite some time now, and was always satisfied before. But about a week or ten days ago, I noticed my 1 TB HD was running dangerously low on space-- unusual, because my wife and I really don't do much; a few games, some documents, and pics-- between the both of us, I'd say we're usually <300GB. When I first noticed the space running low, I deleted some old games, did a disk cleanup, etc.-- all the "usual steps" to free up space. I was able to clear up about 100GB but still only had about 100GB of useable space (out of 931).
Then last night, I was alarmed to discover that I had ZERO disk space. Rushed to google to research what on earth could be taking up all this room, because neither of us have downloaded a single thing since I last cleaned up. Lots of support articles later, and no resolution. As other users mentioned, I eventually went through both profiles, folder by folder, and eventually found the AVG Web Tune Up folder (in users>username>appdata>local>>packages>Windows_ie_ac_001.
It was taking up an astounding 630GB! As mentioned by other users, the contents of the folder had essentially copied (and then re-copied and recopied, I suspect) virtually EVERYTHING on my hard-drive.
I've not ever had this problem with AVG webtune up before-- In fact, as indicated by others, I didn't even know that I *had* it (it must have installed side by side with AVG anti-virus). And the problem started less than two weeks ago, so it must have been some problem with an update or something.
But AVG, PLEASE acknowledge this issue. I see that lots and lots of users are posting here, all having this issue at the same time. SOMETHING is wrong with AVG web tune up.
Thankfully, I succesfully uninstalled ALL AVG software from my PC last night (didn't need any special software, just uninstalled via programs in control panel), and deleted the problem folder. When I get home, I'll double check to make sure no traces are left, but the PC was working fine last night after the delete-- running a hell of a lot smoother than it has been, and with almost 700GB more space than it had been.
At risk of belaboring the point-- I'm sure you understand not just how utterly useless, but also how furstrating and even dangerous this bug is. I won't be using your software again any time soon, at least not until there's a well-documented fix. Which is a shame, because until now, you've fit the bill pretty well. But this bug is absolutely catastrophic and is a good way to ruin somebody's rig.

This is the process which is constantly recreating data in the windows_ie_ac_001 folder. I tried several normal approaches to uninstalling AVG Web TuneUp and nothing worked. The uninstaller just doesn't run. Not even with AVG Remover. I never wanted to use TuneUp anyway, so I don't care if it doesn't work at all.
In fact, i have deleted all AVG software from my machine.

You need not format the entire drive, you have to just delete the cache files of AVG web tuneup manually.

Well this was a giant pain at a very inconvenient time. Hours of my life have wasted tracking down this problem that paralyzed my computer. My wife was frustrated as she tried to work on holiday pictures for presents as we tried and tried to empty our computer of superfluous files. Then it was getting rid of stuff we wanted to keep.
I didn't have time to check it out as this is a busy time of year for me, but when the computer stopped working entirely I had no choice but to take an evening off work - not to spend relaxing with my family, but tracking down this bug, caused by a piece of your software which I DID NOT WANT INSTALLED OR OPERATIONAL on my computer.
I've been a loyal AVG user for a long, long time. I've installed it on many family and friends' computers. I've told everyone I know it's the best option in virus protection. I'm very upset at how much your software disrupted our life at probably the absolute most incovenient time.

Why aren't you telling people to disable VProtect from starting up then delete the cache? Why aren't you doing anything to help us get rid of "Web TuneUp"?

Amazing what you are referring to as a solution in the links (dissappeared?) as the real solution turned out to be quiet simple:
- clear the messed up directory
- stop the AVGprot service (or whatever it is called)
- Remove AVG web tune up
Unbelievable that the highest priority means more than a week searching in your senior development team, while it must be obvious what update must have caused this (how about a rollback?).
Allthough it is Christmas you should be working around the clock to fix this.
I hope in favour of your reputation, you really speed up a solution, and learn how to write solution articles!

I've made sure to let all my friends on FB to delete AVG and I recommend everyone to try a different software.

First of all, good luck finding the culprit with windows file explorer. It's like a secret hidden folder that eludes you. What I did was downloaded WinDirStat, a program that shows you what programs/files are taking the most space. http://www.fosshub.com/WinDirStat.html Sure enough, it was the AVG web tune up (which I had already deleted in full along with all AVG products and software via the program IObit Uninstaller). To be exact, my folder (only one of two users on the computer) had 530GB of useless duplicating files under 'windows_ie_ac_001' --> AC --> AVG Web Tuneup.
When you open the pathway towards the most space consumption on WinDirStat you can right click and delete the culprit file. It looked like this going from C: --> Users --> your name --> so forth as below
It took me about an hour ot two to fully delete all the files. Also there were two pathways for this, one for me as a user and one for the other user on the computer. In total it deleted about 700GB. I have still yet to find out if it will continue duplicating but in the last half hour I don't see any increase in space consumption. Though again, I did delete all AVG products completely before this.
Now my end product: Thank god.
My assumption is that this is some sort of virus within an anti-virus program which is inordinately frustrating. Hopefully a permanent fix will come out otherwise there's no way I would download AVG again. For now I guess I'm on the hunt for a new free program. Any suggestions are appreciated.

Multiple users on this thread have made it quite clear that they didn't want AVG Web TuneUp or its ill effects. After having 3 of you (Aravind, Balasubramanian, Kishore) repeatedly tell people that the issue was escalated, what became of this issue? Did your "developers" have a good F-ing reason why this suspicious program was copying files around users' hard drives and how they managed to end up with a bug that would result in the depletion of free space? Do your developers and management understand the effects of an operating system and other applications trying to run on a disk with 0 space for any period of time? This thread seems to have lasted a month before normal users stopped adding to it. How has the "get back your trust again" part of your claim been progressing?
Avinash - "then remove any folders from Program files" - I don't care what you meant, that level of stupidity in instructions will have users deleting everything in Program Files.

Did someone declare this issue "resolved" in that it may not affect a newer version of TuneUp and think it was a good idea to delete the support article?
Sreedevi - "AVG web tune up will not copy or fill the disk space." - How dare you immediately declare that your stupid program is not doing the exact bad behavior that was diagnosed?
Balasubramanian - It was described earlier that "just" deleting the cache files is pointless when you have a stupid process intent on re-copying them (recursively?) back to the user's profile folder. "Simon S" points this out rather well.
Alan Binch - There are times when profanity, vulgarity, obscenity, and being all-around unpleasant are somewhat appropriate, such as when confronted by an unusable computer, data loss (potential or actual), and supposed security software acting like malware. While identifying you individually is not the goal, I am identifying "Guru" by account display name and signature who contribute to the "support" of AVG. Additionally, for "Don't forget that the Xmas / New Year hols period is approaching." - I don't care if it's a religious holiday, the CEO's picnic, or time for a mass suicide ritual of failed programmers... if someone made a giant F-up that involves the degradation or potential destruction of users' computers and their work/property stored therein, that someone should be fixing it or getting help to do so.
Your own AVG Feedback section includes these pre-defined options for "increase the likelihood of you choosing AVG in the future"

How about you NEVER do stupid stuff to slow down computers and NEVER do anything intrusive such as user monitoring/tracking, installing unwanted programs such as Web Search and Secure Shield without warning or via bundles, how about you have support people who are actually able to comprehend a problem instead of defending bad products and linking people to the same broken removal instructions, and how about having developers who #1 don't make evil, broken software and #2 can fix software when bugs are reported? The feedback page can not be submitted due to its own bad coding and reliance on an also-stupid Are You Human game. The form is never submitted even after the Game Completed notice.
There seems to be no explanation of vproc.exe from Pilif in this post. - the only other reference I could find is https://support.avg.com/answers?id=906b00000008tdzAAA where Avinash tells someone to go delete it and Balasubramanian then asks the user why he is looking for that file AFTER SOMEONE IN SUPPORT told him to go delete it.
When your software needs its own, specialized remover tool (ex. Balasubramanian's link to filedir/util/AVG_Remover.exe), you have probably done something wrong and may be in malware territory.
