How do I really uninstall AVG Protection?

AVG AntiVirus is proving impossible to uninstall from my computer. I tried all the recommendations: uninstalling from the Programs list (failed, a window pops up and reads "Unexpected Error! Sorry we've run into a problem during installation. Error code: 0xe0010002). I tried the AVG Remover, but it doesn't even find AVG Protection. Messages pop up in my Windows 7, indicating that I don't have an antivirus program installed. Yet, when I right click on any file, I get the option to scan the file using AVG. I have a folder in Program Files that is full of AVG files. I can scan files when I right click on them (I get the message: scan finished!). Are you intentionally trying to make AVG impossible to uninstall? Most people would not mind checking the Program Files folder and the right click menu after uninstall, but personally I am very annoyed by this experience. I was trying to temporarily uninstall AVG but I am having a terrible experience now and I am in doubt. I know this is a free product and you don't have to work without getting any benefit, but I should have the right to uninstall your product. Can you help me?

Hello Matematike,
We are sorry for the inconvenience. The latest version of AVG can be uninstalled from the control panel, if you get error please follow the below steps:
Download and run AVG Clear tool: https://share.avg.com/steam/PSP/AVG2017/AVG_Clear.exe. This tool will help with removing AVG 2017 and its traces.

Open tool
User Account control - click "Yes"
Windows safe mode - click "No" (we cannot recommend use the tool in safe mode, because there is a problem with compability)
Choose installed version (AVG Free, AVG Internet Security)
Click "Uninstall"
Click "Restart computer"
KarthikeyanKarthikeyan (Foundever)
fter restart, run AVG Remover and remove all AVG products.

Open AVG_Remover.exe (http://download.avg.com/filedir/util/AVG_Remover.exe)
User Account control - click "Yes"
Click "CONTINUE"
Select all products, and click "Remove"
Click "Restart" and restart PC
After restart Click "Run" (Open file – Security Warning dialog) and let AVG Remover remove traces
Restart PC again

This will uninstall AVG completely from your computer.
Thank you.

Search your computer for "avg" in the control panel, delete every file that it allows you to. There will be several that you can't. If you leave it at that it will reassemble itself somehow. It's the most advanced virus I've ever gotten tbh. To delete the files that at first you can't you have to go to your control panel right click on your hard drive and click properties, click security click advanced click owner edit and then change the owner to the account you're logged in on. Now do the same thing for your windows file. This parts a pain but one you do that for the Windows file you have to open the folder location for every single avg file you couldn't delete and do that same process to take ownership, after you take ownership of each file under the security tab click edit and give the account you're on full control under permissions. That will allow you to delete that file.

it took me about an hour to delete every file in safe mode.

My avg had a little minor bug, so i thought lets reinstall it..... worst mistake of my life.
almost everyone was advising to use the remover tool! only this is for early avg versions, nothing found, u cant delete it through apps & programs as well. I even came to a point where i was editting my own register files. What kind of software requires a removal tool. after a 3 day long fight with this process i came across this topic and was mad to find out there is also a clean tool for 2017 versions.

TL:DR - was planning to reinstall avg, because of the pains of this process > going for windows defender instead. + made me register to comment to share this horrible experience.

Hello John Doe,

I am sorry to know about the inconvenience that you experience with latest version of AVG.
The uninstallation of AVG program will be as quite as easy like you perform other program uninstallation from control panel.
If this method fails, we suggest our customers to go for the AVG Clear tool for 2017 version.
We will take this as a feedback and pass it to developers team. We assure you that immense effort will be implemented and make sure that this kind of inconvenience doesn't happen in mere future.
Thank you.

It is now January 2 2018.

I havfe had the same problems as all others posting in this thread

I had to use Google to find out that AVG have a soution to the problem . . . . a solution that has not been incorporated into the product.

I have been a loyal user of AVG for over 10 years - suddenly I am disappointed by AVG's appallingly amateur performance.. It will take a small miracle for AVG to win me back.

Happy New Year - now get your act together

Philip,
Please accept my apologies with regards to the AVG software not living up to your expectations. Were you able to run AVG Clear and AVG Remover tools to completely uninstall AVG?
Alan SandellAlan Sandell
I have a similar problem to Philip earlier this month. I have AVG Free on Windows 10.
If I use Windows uninstall I get the message "Windows cannot access the specified device, path or file. You may not have the appropriate permissions to access the item". I am the sole user on the machine and have administrator privileges.
If I run AVG_Remover is says "AVG Remover did not find any active AVG product within your system ..." If I then press the "Run Anyway" button is appears to run and eventually asks me to reboot. I do that but AVG is still there.
If I run AVG_Clear it just runs and runs and runs with no apparent end.
At startup I get a message about a AVG process being unable to run.
If under task manager I try to stop the AVG Process it says I am not allowed to do that.
How do I get rid of AVG?
Cheers

Ooops - a couple of typos in my message - therea re two occurrences of "is" that should be "it". Sorry.

Alan,
I regret to hear the issue persist despite your efforts to resolve it. I would request you to boot your PC to safe mode ( http://support.avg.com/SupportArticleView?urlname=How-to-reboot-your-computer-into-Safe-Mode ) and run AVG Clear tool from there.
Alan SandellAlan Sandell
Avinash
Many thanks for that. It took a few attempts to get safe mode up, but once I had, I ran AVG Clear and it did indeed clear AVG from my machine.
Thank you again
Alan

I am having the same problem as Alan. I want to do a fresh install of Internet Security as neither the virus definitions nor the avg program will update from the UI - it says a newer version is available but when I click Update I get Unknown error. I tried the AVG Remover Tool twice. It ran, re-started laptop, then continued running but then fails with an error i can't remember. I allowed it to send the report to AVG both times. I will now try the AVG Clear tool. However, could you clear up one question I have about it. Karthikeyan's reply to Matematike suggests that you do NOT run the Clear tool in Safe Mode, but Avinash's reply to Alan says that you DO run it in Safe Mode. (is it safe mode with or without networking?) After I run the Clear toll do I then have to run the Remover tool, and again is this in Safe Mode with/without networking. Thanks in advance for your help. (I only have a big Answer button to click by the way, I hope thats OK)

Hello Iain,
I understand the inconvenience caused, let's work together to fix this issue. Regarding AVG Clear tool in Safe mode: We recommend our customer to run AVG Clear tool in Normal mode, if possible. If we are receiving any error message while running AVG Clear tool in Normal mode then only we request our customers to run it in Safe mode (Safe mode with networking). If you have already run AVG Remover tool on your computer then there is no need to run it again after AVG Clear tool. However, for the best result I request you to follow this article on your computer, this will help you to remove AVG completely along with any previous traces and then do a fresh installation of AVG Internet Security. May I know if you want to reinstall AVG Internet Security or AVG Internet Security - Unlimited.
Best regards,
Alok.

Hi Alok, thanks for your speedy reply. AVG MyAccount says I have Internet Security - my subscrition renews in February but I may renew early and upgrade to Ultimate. I'll keep this page and the article in your link open on my PC while I run the Clear Tool on my laptop, and let you know what happens shortly. Regards, Iain.

Hi again Alok. AVG has succesfully been removed from my laptop. I think I will upgrade to Ultimate straight away now. Will I have to use the Remover or Clear tool for the installation on my PC? Thanks, Iain.
Bhuvaneswari VairavanBhuvaneswari Vairavan (Avast)
Thank you for updating the status, Iain. You can use AVG Clear tool to remove the Internet Security traces and start a fresh installation.

I had the same problems removing AVG Free and the only way I could remove it was to boot into Safe Mode and then uninstall the program via Control Panel.  The AVG Remover never did work.

Did you follow the uninstallation steps provided in this article http://support.avg.com/SupportArticleView?urlname=How-to-uninstall-AVG ? If you face any difficulties, please use the AVG Clear tool mentioned in this article to remove all the AVG traces from your Device.
