I installed AVG free on my Windows Vista computer. After installation the product appears in Add/Remove programs and Windows file explorer under Program Files. My Windows security center reports that AVG is installed and protecting my computer but the dash board icon is not present in my system tray or on my desktop. Also AVG is not listed on my programs menu. When I search for AVG using windows search it finds nothing. I am sure I am infected with malware but without access to the dashboard I have no way to run a full system scan. When I right click on a file and click scan with AVG it says AVGUI.exe is not running. When I search windows for AVGUI.exe it is not found. I checked in services and it is listed and shows that it is on Automatic and is running. Any ideas why the usual ways of accessing the dashboard (desktop shortcut, Program menu and system tray icon) are all missing?
We suggest you to provide us the screenshot of the AVG application found on Add/Remove programs list and also provide us the screenshot of the AVG application file that is present on your PC to check and assist you further. I have attached the screenshots you requested plus some others that you may find helpful. Notice that AVG is not listed as a short cut on my desktop, or in my system tray or on my program menu yet my security center says AVG is running. If you can't help me get to my dashboard can you tell me an alternate way to launch the full scan feature? I need to do a full system scan and don't know how to do that without access to the dashboard.
Thank you for providing the screenshots. It seems that the program got corrupted. To fix this issue, please run the AVG Clear tool mentioned in this article http://support.avg.com/SupportArticleView?urlname=How-to-troubleshoot-issues-after-upgrade-to-the-latest-AVG-antivirus-product to remove the traces. After restart, install AVG free https://www.avg.com/en-us/download and check the status.
Mark, if you use the AVG Clear tool, it is not required to uninstall AVG from control panel first. The traces will be removed automatically by the AVG Clear tool.
If you do not wish to use the AVG Clear tool now, then you can go ahead and uninstall AVG from your control panel.
I uninstalled AVG Free using add/remove programs, then I ran the AVG removal tool, then I ran the AVG cleaner tool. Then I reinstalled AVG Free. No difference. I still do not have a short cut on my desk top or an icon in my system tray or a short cut on my programs menu. When I right click on a file and click scan with AVG it still says AVGUI is not running. When I search windows for AVGUI it is not found. Any more ideas anyone?

Thank you for your efforts but this is just too much trouble to get something to work that should work first time out of the box. I am just going to download a different virus program.
We can find the root of this issue only after analyzing the logs from your computer.
