AVG delays 15 seconds each compilation in Visual Studio 2017

That was not till yesterday, but yesterday I upgraded AVG to the newest version, as suggested and now I have this problem. When I start a to run a project in Visual Studio 2017 AVG delays the project execution by 15 seconds, but only if there were some changes in the code, so the .exe is newly created. I get the following message from AVG: "Hang on,-- this file may contain something bad. C:\Projects\dpr\dpr\bin\Debug\dpr.exe. We're running a quick 15 second scan to see if we can identify any malware". There is an "Abort" button, but it does not work. And after waiting 15 seconds I get another message from AVG: "No problem found. Sorry for the wait. The application will start in a few seconds" and the Visual Studio project starts. Is there any way to disable this feature or to add an exception?

Thank you for providing the screenshot.
We request you to perform repair installation of AVG Protection program once as mentioned in this article: http://avgread.me/1BVxDSY and check whether the issue persists.
Are you using the AVG Protection free version?

Hello, I am also having the same issue. Since the last update, whenever I compile and run a new program I also get the "hang on, this file may contain something bad" message and have to wait 15 seconds for AVG to allow it to run. I know the file contains nothing "bad" because I wrote the source code and compiled it myself. I have already tried the "Repair" advised above, the problem persists. And it is quite a problem because I compile and run programs many times a day (testing and debugging, its the only way to do it), and having this new pop-up forcing me to wait 15 seconds every time I want to run a program is becoming a considerable interruption. This only started happening after the most recent update, so, is there any way to turn off this new feature via a config window somewhere ?

Kind regards, Tim.

Hello Tim,
Please try to reinstall the AVG program using the instructions on the article http://avgclick.me/howtoreinstallAVG and check whether it resolves the issue.
Thank you.

Reinstalling did not change anything. So I removed AVG Protection in Control Panel, leaving only AVG and now its OK.

Hello Jaceg,

The program "AVG" that is left is the Zen interface.
Please run this remover tool: https://share.avg.com/steam/PSP/Zen/avgfmwremoverx.exe to remove the traces of it.
Please install the AVG Protection free using this link: http://files-download.avg.com/inst/mp/Antivirus_Free_1817.exe and check whether the issue persists.
If it persists, then we can help you in escalating the case to senior team. Please do not uninstall AVG Protection until the escalation is done.

Hello, I found the problem, and its pretty easy to fix. Go to the "Settings" option in the menu. In the "General" section there is a tick box for "Enable CyberCapture" - untick it.

CyberCapture just checks programs that are not run a lot, which means if you recompile a program then it "looks" different to AVG, which means AVG things it has not been run a lot, ie its a brand new program, so AVG always does this CyberCapture check on newly compiled programs. Unticking the "Enable CyberCapture" fixes the issue. No need to repair or reinstall anything, it would be nice if the AVG representatives at least had some knowledge of the "General" settings for AVG, that would have saved some time.

Kind regards, Tim

Thanks a lot Tim it worked.

Regret the unprofessionalism of AVG, which do not seem to train their online respresentatives beyond repair or reinstall suggestions.

Agree. AVG support staff is ill informed about their own product.
Users are harassed necessarily.

Interesting, unchecking the CyberCapture didn't work for me. However, something else did...
In settings, there is an option to enter expeptions. I just selected the path to the exe files that I compile myself and the problem appeared to be solved from that point on.

@Philippe: it can never be that you have to add each and every file you compile yourself to that list of exceptions.  It's just bad what AVG does, period.  And it's not the only "quirk" in their latest software.  They even thow up empty windows every now and then without any reason.  And even a window that regulary pops up and says there's a potential danger because they found 0 (!!!) issues...  Grasp whoever can...

And in too many cases, AVG support is always telling the same: uninstall and re-install.  And even if people do this, they even don't read it because they might say the same over and over again...

The fix for this is simple, if not obvious. Open the user interface and click Settings.  Find Exclusions under General and add the path to whatever directory you are using to build in.  For example, all of my code and projects are under Documents\Visual Studio 2017 and the entry in Exclusions looks like C:\Users\Dad\Documents\Visual Studio 2017\*.  Once you've added that, Avast will stop triggering on whatever application you've developed.

@Sean Hennessey This worked exactly the way I wanted the solution to work. Now I have just added all my primary workspace folders to the exclusions list and problem solved. Cheers.
