For a long time I've been running CleanMyMac X on my iMac together with AVG AntiVirus without any problems. As I attempted to open CleanMyMac today it was blocked from running by AVG reporting that AVG AntiVirus had "Safely blocked CleanMyMax X because it was infected with MacOS:PuAgent-AZ[PUP]". As CleanMyMac was an app purchased to declutter my iMac and is now being blocked, do I have to remove AVG AntiVirus from my iMac or is there a way to stop it blocking me from running the same app I've been using without a problem for so long? I've added details of the app to AVG - Preferences - Exceptions - File Shield without success. I've just noticed that AVG is also blocking 4 Media You Tube Video Converter, EZ Vinyl Converter and VIDBOX for Mac. It would appear that AVG is doing more harm than good. Any suggestions please before I remove AVG, never to return?
Hi Michael. We regret the inconvenience caused. Please make sure the virus definitions in AVG AntiVirus for Mac is up to date. To manually check for available updates, click the refresh icon next to Virus definitions in the bottom-right corner of the main screen in AVG Internet Security or AVG AntiVirus FREE. If the virus definitions are up to date and the issue persists, please uninstall AVG and install it again.
My iMac and AVG were up to date so I removed AVG antivirus. After removing AVG my old apps began to work again so I followed your advice and downloaded a fresh installation of AVG AntiVirus (free) only to be greeted with a message from AVG proudly announcing that it had blocked CleanMyMac X from working. It had also effectively blocked the other apps (mentioned in my original question) from working. The logical conclusion: I have had AVG AntiVirus and the other apps installed and working for a long time. The apps work perfectly well with AVG uninstalled so someone at Grisoft/AVG must have been tinkering somewhere and their efforts have unexpectedly impacted on other trusted apps rendering them useless. If it has happened to me then I'm sure it must have happened to a great many more AVG customers. It is with great sadness that I am left with no option other than to uninstall AVG Antivirus permanently unless you are in a position to rectify the situation by reversing the harmful effects that I presume have inadvertently been caused by a recent harmful AVG update? I eagerly await your update, hopefully before other customers discover the same fault and follow my lead of uninstalling AVG AntiVirus as I have previously been a most enthusiastic supporter of your product and woud ideally prefer to use it in the future should the existing problem be rectified promptly.
I have included two screenshots; the first shows the error message when I attempt to open CleanMyMac with AVG AntiVirus (free version) installed whilst the second image shows the error message received when I attempt to reinstall a fresh version of CleanMyMac, again with AVG AntiVirus installed.
If I reinstall CleanMyMac before installing a fresh version of AVG AntiVirus (free), then even after removing AVG AntiVirus (free) I find any existing version of CleanMyMac has been rendered useless as AVG AntiVirus has obviously damaged the application and I am required to reinstall a fresh new version of CleanMyMac in order to restore it to working order.
I assume this is also the case with other applications that have also stopped working but due to the time and effort involved I have restricted my efforts to just the one app, namely CleanMyMac by MacPaw.
I trust that this will assist you in tracing the cause of the problem?
My wife has a paid version of AVG AntiVirus on her PC laptop but I'm unaware as to whether she has had any similar problems. Therefore, I cannot say if it is a problem specific to iMac computers or whether AVG/Grisoft have changed the way the app scans and identifies potentail threats?
As I've been using AVG AntiVirus and CleanMyMac X for quite some time without any problems, I suspect that this is most likely due to the latter, i.e. a change to the the type of files AVG grabs and dumps in Quarantine.
I did attempt to add CleanMyMac to the list of Exceptions in AVG File Shield but to no avail.
In effect, the app designed to protect my iMac, AVG AntiVirus, set about damaging files rather than protecting them. The exact opposite of what it is designed to do. This has left me with no choice other than to uninstall AVG AntiVirus, after all, who would intentionally add a virus to their computer knowing full well that it would cause damage to my existing files. Using AVG AntiVirus is effectively no better than adding a virus, which it is intended to protect me from.
I've always been most satisfied with AVG so my decision to uninstall it is hopefully temporary?
Faced with the prospect of losing credibility, not to mention a great many customers, I'm confident that AVG/Grisoft will deal with the problem as a matter of urgency and issue an update, even if this entails releasing the previous version of the app (prior to any recent update) as a temporary measure until the exact reason for the fault can be identified?
I have exactly the same issue. AVG and CleanMyPC have been installed side by side for a long time and bothe are/were up-to-date. AVG all of a sudden decided that CleanMyPC formed a threat and quarantined it. Grrr.....
AVG also causes an issue with my email client Postbox. I had to switch the email shield off in order for Postbox to work.
If these issues continues I will have to cancel my subscription and use a different anti-virus program. Shame, as AVG has served me well for a very long time.
Llike lots of others I have the same issue on my mac after having the paid version of AVG on my system for more than a year. Its nothing to do with the free version - AVG have you sorted it or are you about to see an exodus of customers?
We're glad to look into this & clarify. Please write back to us in your own post to proceed further. This will help us to locate the AVG account registered with us. Thank you for your understanding in advance!
There is currently an incompatibility with CleanMyMacX and AVG that neither company seems to be able to solve. Here's a workaround: -Trash your existing CleanMyMac -Downlaod a new version either from the Mac App Store or the CMM website onto your desktop -Don't try to open it yet -Open AVG and navigate from the toolbar icon as follows: - Open AVG - Core Shileds - File Shield - On, to turn the File shield off. You'll be asked for your password.. Provide it, then click the File shield off. Now click on the CleanMyMac disk image and reinstall CMM. Open CMM from the toolbar and it will be working. Run a CMM scan or whatever other operation you wish. Reset the AVG core shield to On. Keep the CMM disk image on the desktop - you'll see why in a minute…
Now, you will have a problem because when you want to run another scan, AVG will block CMM. You could keep the file shiled off but that's not advisable. Instead, do this: - Open a new folder on your desktop - Drag the CMM disk image into the folder - Rename the folder CleanMyMacX-1 -Drag the folder into your applications and it will sit next to your CMMX app Now, when you wish to run another CMM scan, open AVG and turn off the file shiled, trash your CMMX and reinstal it from the disk image in your applications. Lastly, write to AVG and MacPaw and tell then to sort the bloody thing out!
I am having the same issue. I have added CleanMyMac X to my exception list but the issue is STILL persisting. I tried to contact customer service and then when I was submitted, the "contact" form greyed out and I was linked to come to the community center. So I can't even contact customer service about it, apparently, even though AVG has not offered any substantial help on this issue. I am about to uninstall AVG completely. The lack of substantial response on this is incredibly frustrating.
We apologize for the inconvenience. We've already replied to your original post. Please keep up the conversation in a single post for better assistance. Thank you for understanding.
We've forwarded this issue to our higher level support. We'll write back to you once we've received an update from them. Meanwhile, we request your patience and to keep checking the posts regularly. Thanks.
Hello to everyone who communicated on this forum thread. My name is Shawn and I am writing on behalf of the AVG Senior Support team. I will help you.
First, to confirm, AVG is aware of this disruption. However, it is not a false detection, and in fact is a legitimate detection.
The reason for this detection is that the program was determined by AppEsteem, which is a third party reputable CyberSecurity authority, to be a deceptor. The following AppEsteem FAQ, https://is.gd/8oc4JM, clarifies the deceptor classification.
You are encouraged to communicate your concern with CleanMyMac, so that they may comply with necessary guidelines not to be determined PUP.
This disruption is obviously an inconvenience for a lot of our users. For those users who still want to use the application, beyond disabling scanning of PUPs for File Shield, the only other potential work-around solution, is to set an exception for the file shield (screenshot attached). After setting the exception, it may be necessary to reinstall the CleanMyMac application.
I trust this explanation and information help clarify your concern. Regards, Shawn
Hi all from Thailand, I have reported this problem to Macpaw but they are as interested to sove it as is AVG ! Each seems to simply blame the other and do squat - instead of just picking up a phone and talkiing with each other and sorting it out ! unimpressed ! The workarounds can get done but they often are silly, you can not select the CMM files as "exceptions" inside AVG unless they are on the computer and you can not install them onto the computer because AVG stops you from doing so ! You delete AVG install new CMM and CMM works fine, then you re-install AVG and the very first thing AVG does BEFORE you can upddate the AVG EXCEPTIONS list is to kill off and block CMM - catch 22 ! Crap service from both CMM and AVG really
As we've discussed in this post, we're completely transparent about this issue. AVG Antivirus/Internet Security has been detecting the "Cleanmymac X" application as a 'Deceptor' which was determined by AppEsteem, which is a third party reputable CyberSecurity authority. The following AppEsteem FAQ, (https://is.gd/8oc4JM), clarifies the deceptor classification. However, if you still wish to use the "Cleanmymac X" application, we'll certainly help you with that. Beyond disabling scanning of PUPs for File Shield, the only other potential work-around solution, is to set an exception for the file shield. If the issue still persists after adding the file to the exception list, please write back to us in your own/new post. We'll check and offer your further assistance to fix the issue. Thank you for understanding.
I just tried loading Cleanmymac X and got the same blocking mesg, that has been posted here. I do have the paid version of AVG and not the free one. This appears to have been going on for a while and the customoer service folks at Cleanmymac X said thay have notified AVG and were expecting this to be corrected on AVG end so their program wouldn't be blocked, but clearly as of 11-10-2020 nothing has been done.
We're glad to help you with this. As informed by our senior level support, we're detecting the app as PUP/PUA potentially unwanted program/application because the app is marked as Deceptor and does not match with our Guidelines. To investigate further on this & help you in a timely manner, we request you to write back to us in your own post. Thank you for your understanding in advance!
So, many months have passed and I have followed the instructions, and kept visiting this and other threads on this subject to try and solve this. Nothing seems to work. I still need to reinstall CleanMyMacX after rebooting from time to time. It is getting rediculous quite frankly. The deceptor classification has been lifted a lot of versions ago, so why does AVG still keep disabling my application?
We're glad to clarify this for you. We're detecting the app as PUP/PUA potentially unwanted program/application because the CleanMyMac is marked as Deceptor and does not match with our Clean Guidelines .
If you prefer to use CleanMy MAC app, you can try the below steps & let us know if it helps: 1. Disable the File shield. 2. Mount Clean My Mac dmg file (download the dmg file if you've already deleted it) 3. Set up the exception (both paths) 4. Unmount the Clean My Mac dmg file 5. Drag and drop Clean My Mac app from the Application folder to the Trash and empty it. 6. Enable the File shield 7. Restart the machine 8. Download the new Clean My Mac dmg file and mount it. 9. Install the Clean My Mac app - drag and drop to the Application folder.

I echo the same issue.
I have a paid subscription for AVG Internet Security, so it is unlikely an issue of free vs paid, it is inherent in the software.

I had exactly the same problem, but came up with a solution. I think.
First I uninstalled AVG and CMM.
Downloaded latest AVG and CMM.
Installed CMM, but closed the program immediately.
Installed AVG, then I did a file shield exclusion of CleanMyMac X .app in the program folder.
Since then, everything has worked perfectly, I think.
