Hi there , im not sure how useful this will be , im just sharing my own experience today . i started off by having the annoying avg needs you to restart to finish updating issue , which i attempted to fix by uninstalling and then going to reinstall . unfortunately the attempt to reinstall kept failing , and after exhausting answers in this forum and the old one , i decided to try reinstalling avast , to secure my computer . well when i tried to reinstall avast , it had a hissy fit and said i didnt have base filtering engine running . so i had a look for that problem , ended up at sevenforums at this thread http://www.sevenforums.com/system-security/206716-how-turn-base-filtering-engine.html , and on it found this link to a widget http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/MiniFixes/RestoreBFE.exe which said it had restarted the engine . i then retried installing the trial version of avg , ( one of the version i had tried to get going ) the reinstall failed as it said it didnt have admin priveleges , so i re ran it telling it to run as administrator ,and the install finally worked . now to the best of my knowledge the only things i had deleted or played with today was the update files for avg which one of the tips on the avg forums said to delete and try and get the update to fix itself , but for whatever reason , that so far seems to have got avg back up and running , however , if the guys putting out the latest updates cant come up with some fixes , it will put ordinary users offside if there isnt easy fixes to issues . so far about this one issue , i can only see this 1 question , on the older site there were lots . so has it generally been fixed or is it still being followed up ?

@ David Spicer

You shouldn't have both Avast & AVG on the same system. Have a look @ this article (https://support.avg.com/windows_product

Hi Alan , Im not sure if you misread my post or I was unclear in my tale , I had issues yesterday , with the repeated , restart to finish updating problem . I then tried several times fix it , then unistalled avg , and failed to reinstall AVG . after those failed attempts to reinstall AVG and while I did not at that time have a antivirus installed and running , I tried to install Avast . its at that point that I discovered the error which I tried to share with the post I made which was that the Avast installer noted in its alert to tell me it could not install because the base filtering engine was not working , that I did not have this engine running , and I wondered if that was the original problem with not being able to reinstall AVG , I then checked the system with the sfc /scannow command , but it didnt find any missing or corrupt system files , ran the fix program from the link i shared above ( RestoreBFE.exe ) , I then attempted to reinstall AVG again , which it finally did . so , considering that i have a little computer knowledge and it took me the best part of a day to get that fixed back to having AVG reinstalled , i wondered if those actually knowing what happens when you uninstall AVG , or delete the update files as per some of the instructions i found in this site , might be able to say - that could be an issue other users are having , or which is entirely possible , that its only a issue i had with my installation . either way I thought I would share . the other aspect , is that , no I dont have Avast installed , I much prefer AVG , its just that at the time I attempted it , I didnt have any antivirus and so was taking desperate measures ...
