How do I make these AVG popups STOP???

Yesterday AVG popped this message up at me: http://i.imgur.com/xgmGERj.png
I keep getting messages like this popping up from AVG, even though I have system tray notifications turned OFF. I'm getting really sick of seeing these blatant advertisements from AVG, and if there isn't a way to make these messages stop, I will consider AVG to be adware and uninstall it. AVG should work in the background without me having to think about it, these messages are UNACCEPTABLE.

Hello everyone,

I'd like to announce that it's possible to change the frequency of the advertising pop-ups (even completely disable in paid versions) in the recently updated version of AVG. Please visit this article (http://avgread.me/popups) to find out more.

Regards,

Jan

Hi John, I will help you resolve the issue, please send us a screenshot of the popup using this link

I am not going to download your screenshot software. I ALREADY INCLUDED A SCREENSHOT in the first post: http://i.imgur.com/xgmGERj.png
AVG trying to get me to install new software is why I'm upset in the first place. Just tell me how to turn off these advertisements from AVG
Hariharkumar LakshmiHariharkumar Lakshmi (Avast)
Hi John, I apologize for the inconvenience, please follow steps given below to disable AVG Notifications
Disable notification
Open AVG > Options > Advance settings > Appearance > uncheck AVG Advisor notification ( if this doesn't work the please  uncheck AVG Notification )
Please let us know if you have any issue. Thank you
John SmithJohn Smith
I already have ALL system tray notifications set to OFF. And yet I keep getting these ads for other AVG products from AVG. I already told you this. Don't give me another canned response, let me talk to someone who actually understands the software. Give me a straight answer, can these messages be turned off, or not?
If these messages can't be turned off, then AVG is adware as far as I'm concerned, and will be uninstalled.
John SmithJohn Smith
If turning system tray notifications off is supposed to work, then I assure you it DOESN'T.
If this is a bug then it needs to be fixed in the next update. These ads from AVG are unacceptable.

Hello John, I profusely apologize for the inconvenience caused. I certainly understand how annoying it could be for you to have those pop ups. We have got so many customers regarding the same concern. We have escalated to the concerned department and it will be taken care as early as possible. Thank you for your understanding.

I just got ANOTHER pop-up: http://i.imgur.com/HSPcHm6.png
WHY ISN'T THERE AN OPTION TO TURN THIS CRAP OFF? THIS IS REALLY STARTING TO PISS ME OFF NOW.
JUST INCLUDE AN OPTION TO TURN POPUPS OFF.
Balasubramanian SBalasubramanian S (Avast)
Hello John, I certainly understand your concern but these popups are legitimate business campaigns from AVG. Inorder to let all our customers know about our AVG products these campaigns were started and it is for all the customers those who use AVG. It is for limited time period and if you are interested to know about those new features then you can click on it and check that or else please ignore such popups. Thank you.
John SmithJohn Smith
I know they're from AVG. I don't care. I DON'T WANT TO SEE THEM. There NEEDS to be an option to turn these ADS OFF.
Without an option to turn ADS OFF, then AVG is practically ADWARE. You need to realize that forcing unwanted ads on your users is UNACCEPTABLE.
YOU NEED TO INTRODUCE AN OPTION TO TURN AVG ADVERTISEMENTS OFF.
Balasubramanian SBalasubramanian S (Avast)
Hello John, I understand your concern. Unfortunately there is no option to turn off it. Since it is the business campaign it cannot be stopped. However submit your idea to AVG via link removed. Thank you.

These pop ups also appear while in game mode causing my game to minimize. That is completely unacceptable.

Sorry to hear that Yu. I would request you to uninstall and reinstall your AVG program once. Please let us know if the issue persists. Thank you.

Hello John, I understand your concern. Unfortunately there is no option to turn off it. Since it is the business campaign it cannot be stopped. However submit your idea to AVG via link removed. Thank you.

AVG as a company need to realise that this business model is a terrible idea. People install antivirus software so they are not harassed by unwanted messages, popups and annoyances. By doing this your defeating the point of your own software.
You provide a free product, advertising within the GUI; that is acceptable. But putting messages up on the screen without user prompting for it makes this software no better then any of the other junk out there. AVG got sucessful because it's software was simple, sucessful and left the user alone. If you don't change your business model you will find over the coming months a huge abandon rate on your software now that it no longer has any advantages over other software.

I use AVG -- and as a computer technician I sell it to business clients. It's because of this devotion that I took the time to write this, I would like to keep using AVG into the future, but the path it is heading is not one that I can follow for much longer.
KishoreKishore (Avast)
Hello John. I really appreciate your efforts in writing back to us. I will forward the message that you have posted us to the development team so that they will make the necessary changes in the upcoming versions. Thanks again for your valuable feedback.

I agree with the previous writers. This used to be a nice simple anti-virus tool. Now it has become a spam generator.
I've used avg on my 5 computers for years, but I just switched to Panda.

See ya AVG, don't let the door hit your butt on the way out.

I feel so sorry for the staff at AVG getting these rediculously entitled people who somehow think that they have a free license to be complete jerks because their free product gave them a little popup. To anyone reading this: i solved the popup problem by follow the advice of Hariharkumar, thank you for that btw. I am a loyal customer of the AVG product since 2008 and it has served my needs for all these years. On behalf of the rest of humanity, i'd like to appolize for these inconsideret selfentitled jerks.

I agree with the others that the AVG pop-ups are unbelievably annoying. Either it's a free program or it's not. If it's one of these malware programs that bombards you with ads that you can't disable then as far as I'm concerned it's not free, any more than the Ask toolbar is "free", or any of the other annoying bugs that you can't get rid of. They're only "free" in the sense that an advertising flyer that's shoved into your letterbox is "free". So if AVG could please make up its mind whether it's genuinely free, as it used to be, or "free with annoying strings attached" then I can decide whether or not to keep it.

Also, for the record, my understanding is that even if you do pay for one of AVG's products, you STILL get bombarded with pop-up ads that you can't disable! Which makes the decision to uninstall it all the easier.

I found an answer through some easy googling that seems to have worked...there are three folders in the AVG folder in Program Files that you need to delete, but you have to disable avg first...

1. Disable AVG self protection:
Right click the AVG icon in the taskbar (near the clock)
Select to Temporarily Disable AVG Protection
Agree the default timeout - usually 10 minutes?
2. Open My Computer or Windows Explorer and Navigate to:
C:\Program Files\AVG\AVG201x\ ...... for 32bit systems (201x means 2013 or 2014)
C:\Program Files (x86)\AVG\AVG201x\ for 64bit systems
3. Delete the following three folders: Awacs, Banners, Tuneup
Do not delete anything else you see inside the AVG201x folder.
If you accidentally delete anything else go to the recycle bin and restore it.
Note: If you have already paid for the Tuneup addon then keep this folder
4. Close the My Computer/Explorer window
5. Enable AVG self protection:
Right click the AVG icon in the taskbar (near the clock)
Select to Enable AVG Protection - takes 20 seconds or so to fully activate.

I stole this info from http://www.wilderssecurity.com/threads/avg-2013-2014-disable-the-advertising-tiles-and-panel.357139/
I'll be really surprised if my post doesn't get deleted however...

Hi Charles...

I created an account just to thank you for the suggestion. I hope this works. This AVG bloatware was something that I used AND recommended. With their militant campaign of popups and notifications, I will not recommend AVG to anyone at present. What a pity that the product that I chose to use to block popups is now the source of my problems. As one user stated, it can knock you out of a game due to the popups. Not a problem for me as I don't game, but my son gets very irritated from it.

I will try to update this thread once I have monitored the results and have something to share.

In the meantime, I am looking for an alternate (free) antivirus to quell my rage. Probably will be Avast or Avira at this point.

Best of luck to all who are suffering through this insanity.

"Hello John, I understand your concern. Unfortunately there is no option to turn off it. Since it is the business campaign it cannot be stopped."

Why are you lying Rajendra?  It absolutely can be turned off, in a way.  Please link us downloads for previous versions of AVG where this function was not installed.  It came through an update, or am I incorrect in my assumption?  Are you saying that the "business campaign" is maintaining a real-time connection with my computer to have these advertisements pop up periodically?

AvinashAvinash (Avast)
Hello John.

We would like to inform you that these campaigns are also there in the older versions of AVG. We would request you to share your feedback here http://avgclick.me/AVGfeedback . Thank you.

I have been a happy user of AVG for more than 5 years, but the path you are taking now, I don't think none will follow you... It's bad business model converting a great piece of Software into Adware. My guess is, none like pop-up the can't get rid of, not even you... It's just not funny losing a game because of a pop-up, get disturbed in the middle of a movie or getting out of the zone when programming because a supposedly legitimate Software is bombarding you with ads and annoying alert and sounds that you can't get rid of.

YOU JUST FAILED TO KEEP OFFERING THE FREEDOM TO USE TO OFFER TO YOUR CUSTOMERS. NOW YOU'RE ANNOYING US AND PUSHING US AWAY. IT'S A SHAME GUYS!

Good bye AVG, I and hundred of my clients are going to miss you.

I have the paid for version of AVG fo 5 computers and am getting pop up ads for their other products kicking me off when I am game playing. It seems pretty obvious that these cannot be turned off from the above postings so I shall certainly not be renewiing when it expires. This AVG ad campaign seems more likely to lose existing customers then to win new ones

Thanks for the help Charles Boyce for helping us getting rid of this annoyance.

My installation is a bit different form what you describe (I don't know why), but I don't have the three mentioned folders in my C:\Program Files\AVG\AVG2012" folder. I did, however, have them in my C:\Program Files\AVG\AV folder, so that is where I deleted them from.

I would also like to comment on the typical brainless answers from the staff in this thread, who need to have things told 10 times before they begin to understand what the problem is about. It is a shame that companies these days hire such incompetent people, who are supposed to be a help in supporting their customers, but are in fact no help at all.
Bad Move AVGBad Move AVG
Have to thank "Charles Boyce" comments to hack the AVG software folder to do what AVG brainless customer service refused to do and "actually give a helpful answer" !!!   To AVG - CEO's and Marketing staff... these new pop-ups this year are a really bad move.  You have turned your Company Anti-adware into a self-defeating 'AggraVatinG' annoyance.  I've used AVG for years, here is DECEMBER 2015 = a full 4 months after this post was created and still you have not resolved this serious issue.  I TOO am a computer tech and from this day forward I WILL NO LONGER RECOMMEND AVG to my clients !  Ever!!!.  Unchecking sytem tray notifications does nothing to stop your annoying pop-ups, and you think shoving annoying promotional ads down the throats of customers is the answer ?  wow, pretty insulting.  To the CEO Chairman & President of AVG - you can take your 'legitimate business campaign" pop-ups and shove them where the sun don't shine - My response to your Adware:  uninstall AVG, end of your adware !  drops microphone - walks away...

I currently manage 125 installations of AVG on 125 Windows XP pc's and was recently asked how much time I consume dealing with all the AVG popups. I do seem to spend a great deal of time dealing with all kinds of popups including ones that open web browsers without our permission. I have also tried the above mentioned fixes without any improvement. After some time and calculation by one of our team members we discovered I spent more than an hour a days just closing these annoying popups. My management has instructed me to find another free antivirus so I am trying Panda as noted above. It seems to work great for our purposes with no popups so far after a few days. Also noted so far is the systems installed with Panda are running faster now.
Now comes the big issue as it takes forever to remove avg from a single pc. THANKS AVG... Please note that thanks is sarcastic in nature. The removal of your product is so slow as to take up to an hour on each machine. I am currently removing it from mutiple units at the same time to try and speed up the process. It has also been suggested that I just reload the systems from scratch as this will only take 30 to 35 minutes per unit and we can be up and running again with all our neccessary additions to the systems in place and no problems from your program.
Now just think avg if you did not have these spamming/adware issues we would not now be removing your product from our systems. I will be very happy when avg is gone from our systems so I will be able to finish my daily workload without any annoying distractions from a spamming/adware program. GOOD BYE avg. It was sort of good while it lasted. LOL. I guess the only bright side to this is I have job security for a while.

I'd like to add my voice to this.  I am also becoming incfreasingly infuriated with these pop ups and so are my customers.

Some of the responses from AVG reps are bordering ion the ridiculous; they know as well as anyone that the incidence of these pop-ups are recent to AVG Protection, and whilst there were pop-ups in the past they were far less frequent / intrusive.

Come on AVG come clean.

This is getting annoying

This is getting annoying. I am getting sick of these AVG ads popping up you are losing fans and quick becaus of these annoying AVG ads.

I have been a fan of AVG since 2008 this lates update has been realy annoying to me.

AVG Free 2016
File Version 1.52.1.51616
Product Version 1.52.1.51616

I suggest putting all these ads back inside the GUI where they belong.

The entire point of having a Anti-Virus program is to eliminate such annoyances these AVG ads or AVG pop-ups like defeat the point in having the program installed.

Dont make switch to one of the following Avira, Avast and Panda all because your programmers screwed up. This BS has to stop. And enough with the copy and paste feedback answers.

If your main goal is to keep customers happy then your not doing a vary good job of it.

Giving you guys a week to get an update out there that puts these AVG ads and AVG pop-ups inside the GUI before I switch to a diffrent anti-virus program.

This is interfearing with my gaming and youtube time.

I have the same problem with the "Your online security is incomplete" popup. I have AVG free version. I have gone to the options and disabled everything, and I have the gaming feature enabled that is supposed to stop AVG from disturbing me while I am playing a game. But this popup still pops up during gaming. Which is very bad, because it doesn't just pop up, it also turns the screen black. Which is very bad because I play car racing games. So AVG causes me to crash, and the last 30 minutes of practice session, and 15 minutes of qualification session, and the race itself, is totally ruined by this. I created an account here just to point out that it is not just a pop up that shows, it kills the game! I will now uninstall this blackmailware and try some other anti-virus software instead. I am willing to pay to get rid of this popup, but I will not pay to those who blackmail me. Goodbye.

I just created an account to tell AVG that I am uninstalling their software on the six computers that I manage because of these ridiculous pop up ads (Your online security is incomplete ...).

I have used AVG for 10 years on all my computers and been fairly happy with it over the years. However, the combination of these pop ups, which will not stop, and the inane imbecile way that AVG has dealt with the complaints on this forum, have resulted in me removing AVG software from all my computers.

It was pretty good while it lasted. It's over now.

Yeah, I don't think your main goal is to keep your customers happy. If it was, you would have done something about these ridiculous pop up ads by now.

I tried twice to provide you with feedback on your online form, and it says that my submission failed even though I answered all the stupid questions.

So I just wanted to say that I have now removed AVG from all my computers, and I will never be using it again. Thanks for AVG being great for a long time.

All these years.... I have been installing AVG free on 1000s of client machines, many have ended up upgrading to the paid version of AVG and now.... I have to deal with AVG complaints constantly because of the AVG spam pop ups. Thanks AVG.

Lets put aside the fact that this impacts my business relationships with my clients and my own reputation and reliability, after reading all the posts in this thread it is apparent that management has isolated themselves from the people who are paying their salaries (Us!) by using the equivalent of call centre reps to dish out all the "We are sorry, please post your comments on the suggestion page" messages.

Stop saying you are sorry it is patronizing when clearly after many months AVG has demonstrated the company has no intentions of reversing their decision to spam all of its clients. I myself have paid for your products over the years and apparently having the paid version of AVG does not have any effect on unwanted AVG desktop pop ups, they appear in both the free and paid versions.

You have convinced me to 1. Stop using AVG products but more importantly 2. I will no longer install AVG on clients machines or recommend any of your products, in fact just the opposite, we will go back to the drawing board and test all of the other antivirus/anti malware products and advise all of our clientèle to remove all AVG products from all of their machines.

Do not reply to this with how sorry you are from the callback handbook you were issued, do not ask for a screenshot of which pop or which AVG program we are using (like it is a surprise to AVG and they do not know what we could all be possibly talking about) it is insulting. They say even bad publicity is still publicity... well there you go mission accomplished.

The canned responses from AVG support are a joke. If you also follow their suggestion to provide feedback (because you are annoyed by the misleading unwanted popups) then you are ataken to a standard web form.
If you take time to complete this form, and fill out EVERY field correctly, it FAILS.
The field which causes the error?:
"Are you aware that AVG has a full, paid version of security software? Yes/No"
Are you kidding me? that is the REASON I am providing feedback! Because you keep ramming it down my throat every day no matter how many times I tell you I am not interested!
If you select Yes in that field, it fails. Select No, it fails. Leave blank? It fails.
Result: AVG fails.
If they cannot even manage to get a simple web form to work, how do I trust them to provide reliable antivirus?
I also noted that this thread appers to be hidden if you search within their site. You can get to it from a google search no problem but maybe they dont want you to find this on their forum?

Anyway, since AVG feedback does NOT work, I will put it here:
"I have been using AVG for at least a decade but I have installed rival products on all my family's laptops in recent months and am on the verge of removing it from my own machine for one reason: Annoying popup adware trying to con me into installing the full paid version. How many times do I need to click 'No Thanks' before you understand I am not falling for it?
Give an option to permanently turn off this malware feature or AVG is gone for good."
How likely are you to leave AVG in the next 3 months?5 - Very Likely
What could AVG improve that would increase the likelihood of you choosing AVG in the future?Should be less intrusive
Are you aware that AVG has a full, paid version of security software?YES
Do you have any plans to upgrade to the full, paid version of AVG?NO

Hello User,

Sorry for the inconvenience caused.
This is the first time we are hearing that customer couldn't complete the feedback form.
There is no option such as "Are you aware that AVG has a full, paid version of security software? Yes/No" in our feedback form.
Please visit our feedback link: http://www.avg.com/product-feedback once again and try to submit it from a different browser.
Also, many of our customers have submitted the feedback for this same issue so our concerned team might take an action regarding this advertisement popups.
Thank you.

Balasubramanian, your statements regarding feedback are not true.

At this point, I can see that your untrustworthy company has at least 4 different links that you give as feedback URLs, and they tend to end up at either http://www.avg.com/eu-en/product-feedback or http://www.avg.com/us-en/product-feedback

If a user uses either page and selects "AVG Antivirus Free" as the answer to "Which AVG product are you currently using?", the following 2 questions are added to the list.
"Are you aware that AVG has a full, paid version of security software?"
"Do you have any plans to upgrade to the full, paid version of AVG?"

It is not worth my time to try to validate which links result in my information being accepted/discarded as intended.

The post above may be the first time you read a complaint regarding the feedback system not working, but I can assure you that it has been reported before.  (If you DARE to say that the way to report the broken feedback system is with the (broken) feedback page, I can not tell you what will happen; but I can assure you that it will not result in me putting well written feedback into a dead-end system for the amusement of support morons and people who ignore security, ethics, and proper marketing issues.)

Since your feedback pages are (multiple) black-box forms with no way to verify that anyone has received or is taking action based on the information, and since your helpdesk staff has not returned my call relating to the malicious behaviors and advertising methods, I shall have to assume that we can not trust concealed methods at AVG.  Telling people to submit their feedback to a private area (or broken system) where concerns can be ignored is nearly equivalent to having people submit their issues to a trash can/waste bin/dumpster/skip/AVG ethics office.

Now, related to the main topic of "AVG popups", this thread was mainly about the "Your online security is incomplete" pop-up: https://support.avg.com/answers?id=906b0000000bn1CAAQ

Analysis of your statement "Also, many of our customers have submitted the feedback for this same issue so our concerned team might take an action regarding this advertisement popups."
"might take an action regarding this advertisement popups"
"might take an action"
...
"regarding
this advertisement popups"
This is why AVG software can be considered malware as detailed in the other thread.
It should not take multiple complaints (especially through a broken, "black-box" closed system) and an investigation period for you (the company) to determine that what you are doing is wrong/hazardous, contrary to the objectives of proper security software, interpretable as malicious (actions of malware), and actually giving other malicious software something to copy to appear "legitimate".  Certain things should obvious as bad ideas from the moment they are proposed.

To those who represent AVG Technologies, please do not respond like chat/forum bots or submit any claim that will be deductively reasoned as false ("Our main goal is to keep our customers happy.")  It is clear the normal operators are unable to provide useful information, excuses, or defenses (as none exist for this behavior).  Escalate this issue as appropriate, and get a proper authority to respond.

I've used AVG for years, installed it on my clients' machines. I tolerated the ads in the past because they weren't obtrusive. They've finally gotten to the point of annoyance that I won't tolerate. So long.
Troppo NtTroppo Nt
To all the wining freeloaders.  Who do you think pays the salaries that allow staff to respond to your dumb complaints about a free product.  Pay your way and stop freeloading.  BTW, I congratulate AVG on its polite responses.  As for First Last, get a life.  If you don't like what AVG does, then switch.  Why would they care?  I have used AVG Free for as long as I can remember.  I would pay a one off annual payment without tracking but this is not available.  I have previously tried.  So I acknowledge that AVG have the right to advertise but block the ads after having read them.  It's actually quite easy as they are sent down the pipe in updates.  Figure it out yourself.
Disgruntled UserDisgruntled User
Ok fanboy, calm down. The reasonable complaints are largely about the robotic false statements made by "support" trying to justufy their recent deceitful practices.
It has been clearly shown above that:
a) they do not read the previous comments (first time anyone has mentioned broken
b) they do not even know their own systems (there is no question "do you know there is a paid for version?" REALLY?)
It all points to 1 thing, the product is not my problem, their policy and "support" is.
Their aim is 1 thing, push you away from the free version against your will. Sorry but all you do is push me to competitors.
Disgruntled UserDisgruntled User
And in response to the support statement saying the feedback form didn't have that field:
User-added image

It DOES. That is the broken bit of your feedback form.
If I was suspicious I would suggest it had been designed so that you could not complain about the free version, you can only give feedback if you have paid for it.

We will take this as your valuable feedback and will inform this to our development team.
Your patience is much appreciated. Thank you.

@Troppo Nt - Your dumb comment is not really valid and pretty stupid actually. There is a differance between Antivirus programs fighing to stop Adware and Antivirus programs pushing Adware?
It's actually quite easy really, Figure it out yourself.!
As for the rest of you guys, just uninstall AVG, your better off without it as the Mods on here are just having a laugh telling you to fill the feedback form out because basically they are saying that they will not stop forcing Adware on you?
I used AVG since the day it came out and can understand about the adverising side of it but this is ridiculous?
Avira is the best now guys!

I have used AVG for many many years, recomended the use to hundreds of people instore.

since the introduction of these popups, i cannot recomend this program to anyone any more. i my self, are looking for other programs with less bloat ware.

Sorry, but who ever thought up this idea, is not only losing you personal users, its losing you business users too... cannot have this kind of popup show during a business meeting.

unless theres a way to disable these popups. you have lost more customers than it will ever gain, due to most people classing this as adware...

Hello Adam,

We do understand your concern.
We already received many feedback regarding this campaign popups.
As this is the only way of marketing our products we couldn't stop this, however we got a multiple feedback regarding this so there is a chance of making some changes for this campaign popups.
Steve LnameSteve Lname
I was getting really tired of clicking “No Thanks” to these popups so I searched Google for a solution. I selected this link. After reading this entire thread I have some advice for Balasubramanian, Aravind Gnanamurthy, Avinash, Rajarajan Sooiyachanth, Kishore, Sreedevi Padmakumar, Rajendra Sekar, Hariharkumar Lakshmi and ShriThillak Ravi. That’s right, nine different people all reading from the same script in Bangalore saying “we apologize”, “thank you for your feedback”, “we do understand your concerns”, etc, etc, etc.  It’s actually more maddening than the popups and downright insulting. None of you should respond to any of these messages again, you’re actually making it worse and trying everyone’s patience. If you respond to this with another “We do understand your concern” or “thank you for your feedback” it will show how truly clueless you are and I will cut and paste the many responses to make a fantastic YouTube video of this fiasco. It may actually go viral.
I have been using AVG for years and like many of the folks on this thread, have a significant number of clients. I’m a reasonable man; I will continue to click “No Thanks” every day for two more weeks. The developers can fix this in an hour and put it in an update. If it’s not resolved by then I will move on. It’s quite simple really, and I suspect if they (the actual development team, not the support group) don’t address this post haste it will have a significant enough business impact that it may not be possible for AVG to recover, it is that serious.

Thats AwkwardThats Awkward
Wow, it is astonishing that any organisation can be so stupid.  I am so fed up with AVG popups (basically malware) interfering with my day-to-day activity.  And the "support" from AVG is the worst I have ever seen.  Talk about shooting themselves in the foot.

I am today uninstalling all AVG software from all 16 computers.

I'm not sure how many times I hear from AVG that this is "legitimate Business campaign popups", but let me tell you this:  This is my legitimate consumer choice decision: you have lost 16 users today.
Paul HarrisPaul Harris
Well, in some way, it's good to know that I am not the only one with this problem. This is pure utter deception for these popups to occur, which cannot be manually turned off, and without my permission when I installed (although this has only started in the past few weeks so is clearly malware via an update). If AVG think this is acceptable, well news your you buddy (and buddy-ess) - it isn't. The responses from the AVG reps here not only pure arrogance when pointing people to useless feedback forms but it also shows they 1) do not read/understand the issue at hand and 2) have no intention whatsoever to remove this malware.

I am a patient man but I have my limits. I will give them one week to resolve this. That should be plenty of time as it's an easy fix by another update - otherwise, Panda here I come. (Yes, I am not holding my breath).

Hi Fellow Suffering AVG'rs...

Regarding the following solutions from two threads, can any one UNEQIVOCALLY state that they work absolutely positively for sure; i.e. over a period of say a several days, restarts, etc....  there appears to be some doubt based on other posts, at least for the latest updated version. Note that the www.wilderssecurity.com/threads/avg-2013-2014-disable-the-advertising-tiles-and-panel.357139/ noted as the source of Charles Boyce's posted solution clearly shows 2013-2014, but not 2015-2016...

Also, if one follows this advice to delete the suggested folders / files, wouldn't it also be possible to MOVE and / or RENAME file or ext. vs deleting, and if it doesn't work restore them to their original location / name, OR is that going to too much trouble vs just deleting which presumably allows complete restoration of all deletions to their original status with a few clicks putting everything back as if nothing had happened...

@Mike C

There's another way to stop these pop-up ads which doesn't involve uninstalling or downloading anything:

1. Turn off router (maybe I'm being paranoid here!)

2. Disable AVG self protection: Right click the AVG icon in the taskbar (near the clock).

Select to Temporarily Disable AVG Protection.
Agree the default timeout - 10 minutes should be plenty.

3. Open My Computer or Windows Explorer and Navigate to:

   C:\Program Files (x86)\AVG\Av\

4. Delete the following three folders: Awacs, Banners, Tuneup*

Do not delete anything else. If you accidentally delete anything else go to the recycle bin and
restore it.   *Note: If you have already paid for the Tuneup addon then keep this folder.

5. Enable AVG self protection:  Right click the AVG icon in the taskbar (near the clock).

Select to Enable AVG Protection - can take 20 seconds or so to fully activate.

6. Switch on router.

When a new version of AVG is installed you will have to repeat this process.  But this once a year is more satisfying than clicking "No Thanks" every bloody day!

And from this thread...

December 5, 2015

@Charles Boyce

TIA...

I think AVG are taking the P*SS.

Having deleted Awacs, Banners, Tuneup folders on 16Feb, I now find that AVG have invented a new pop-up saying my" AVG is incomplete".

Meaning they are not going to stop the adware campaign but maybe make it not pop up as much?
As I have said above alone with many others, I have been with AVG from day one and didn't want to leave but force met no choice. When you get bullied you have to fight back!

Aint GotanameAint Gotaname
@Gulam Shaik Mohammed - You are very condescending and I think you are trying to insult my intelligence. Your apologies are not sincere and unreserved at all. All you guys have said about people complaining on here is direct them to a “feedback form” which we all no why AVG as done that. You mods on this forum ain't really interested about how this pop up affects us users as it doesn't effect you like it does us. I hate bullies and feel I have been bulled into changing my antivirus program and with your aggressive bulling advertising campaign forced me to uninstall your Antivirus Adware Software!!
Steve LnameSteve Lname
@Aint Gotaname – “And why would you @Steve Lname & @Paul Harris threaten them with “your going to give them 2/1 weeks or your going to leave” your nothing to these guys and you can't hold them to ransom and losing the few that they have is just a drop in the ocean so quit threatening and just do it.”

Ransom is not my intent, that is your word, I’m showing a little “patience” (look it up) and giving them the same professional courtesy I would expect someone to give me, instead of going in kicking, screaming, and ranting as my default position, like you. I’m waiting 2 weeks because, as I said, I’m a reasonable man. Yes, I posted my displeasure… but this issue is not the end of the world. There’s a difference between a crisis and an inconvenience in life and it doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure out which one this is. If the development team hasn’t responded to the public outcry and the popups are still there in two weeks I will take the 5 minutes and switch aps, it’s really not that difficult.

My advice to you, since you’ve already switched, would be to just move on from this post and get on with your life instead of chastising everyone posts because they don’t comply to your requirement of instant action. I suggest you just take a pill and lay down for a while and try to put things in perspective. Life is way too short to get so riled up over issues like this. If you’re a millennial, I understand that you won’t be able to do that, but it would be worth a try.

@Steve Lname - The reason why I reacted to your comment for is because you came across as though you were the high & mighty saying “Look AVG, stop these pop ups or I'm going to leave and then you'll be screwed” and to be honest, your post is more aggressive and angry than anyone else's on here, even counting 9 mods to moan about and even threaten to “make a fantastic YouTube video of this fiasco
” That made me lol..
They don't care about the few that have uninstalled AVG so why would they give a damn about you saying you will give them 2 weeks?. Man up and grow a pair and just uninstall AVG if your getting annoyed with the pop up, which clearly you are, otherwise you wouldn't have taken the time to find this thread and moan like the rest of us?
You might be special to AVG but in the end I were getting the pop up every 5/10 seconds and oh, they fixed deleting the folders as mentioned above so you still got the pop up. Think about why they did that?
If you read my post you will understand why I came in kicking and screaming as this adware advert is just an aggressive bully campaign, IE, buy the full product or we well bombard you with pop ups ads! As far as I were concerned I were fully protected even with the free version so why would they constantly tell me “Your online security is incomplete”? Sorry but to me that is aggressive bully tactics. But if your into that type of torment then fine, you get on with it and don't threaten to switch!
Thanks for the advice on taking drugs, I presume you mean you want me to take ecstasy or some other drugs as I have just found out that people take Es and lay down to chill? I'm not really familiar with drugs so I will pass on that but thanks anyway!
My advice to you is, take a legal drug like Diazepam or Tamazepam and lay down don't take comments too serious man, we are all entitled to make them, this is what forums are all about, freedom of speech and that, or is that not allowed any more??
I wish you pop up free in the next 10 days and if you don't get any more pop ups, it means AVGs aggressive adware campaign backfired lol.

I have used AVG for coming onto 15 years or so now and I too agree with the guys on here that AVG Free has turned into nothing but AdWare.

I am on my PC all day every day and I get spammed with these popups. Roughly one every 2 hours or so and the recent one that insists I need better security is annoying as the AVG Firewall it installs is rubbish. I get that notification at varying times. Sometimes twice an hour, sometimes once a day. Hitting 'No-f*cking-Thank-you' does nothing.

I had already installed the new Firewall but didn't like it as it blocked my access using WinAmp Desktop and the WinAmp Android App WiFiSync and the Firewall refused to pop up a request in adaptive mode. So I uninstalled the security addon it installed and it removed EVERY AVG product I had. I then re-installed and I keep getting these damn popups. At this rate, I am going to be forced into getting another Anti-Virus.

It sucks really as I have done nothing but recommend to hundreds if not thousands of people over the years that AVG was the best Anti-Virus out there. That will be changing now for sure.

@AVG, you REALLY need to fix this. I do not mind the adverts being on the application homescreen itself like the old versions, but these popups HAVE to go! I will give you a month to roll out an update/fix to this or I will be gone. Don't force me to buy that horrible virus-ridden app called Norton now...

Hello, Things are getting worse.  Just a couple of things recentl (I note my last post on the subject was pulled)

1. I did a clean insatll of win 7/64 today, loaded drivers and within 30 minutes of installing AVG adware, before even the initial scan was done, up came a pop-up asking if I wanted to tune the PC - thats plain ridiculous.
2. I have now removed the 3 folders suggested, but now I get a pop-up "Your AVG is incomplete",  blah blah...AVG is really taking the ****.

Some of you may recall 2-3 years ago AVG became so heavy that it would delay boot time by 30-60 seconds - many folks did move from AVG, they voted with their feet.  AVG knows when you uninstall, so thats the only way they will really take notice and reconsider this silly practice.

Not only does it annoy gamers,it also pops up during iplayer, watching movies etc....If it gets silly I will start uninstalling, my own as well as clients PCs, (note that many of the latter do go on to the paid versions), so there would be a net drop in revenue to AVG.

Dear cutstomers,

We are VERY sorry to hear you don't like our shitty forced advertisement campaign. Indeed we took advantage of the trust our customers had in us to trick and lead them to a purchase move through a repetitive advertisement harrassment. As you know we have sooooo many customers in the world, we dont care if you are unhappy or even unsubscribe to our product, because the ratio  "unhappy-unsubscribe"/ "I wont complain about ads" is extremely low, meaning we can afford to loose a part of our customers although they have been great for years. You are just an expendable loss, statistics are by our side.

We have done some changes in here at AVG's headquarters. I know we had great ideals when we started AVG in the past, and we thank you for trusting us. But now we want to get more money even at the price of our reputation and your privacy. We also stay far away from that conflict situation and leave poor guys dealing with you on the support forums, we don't want to face anything as brave as we are. So please be nice with them cause there is nothing they can do : they are our shield and do the dirty job! God bless hierarchy.

I think I've made myself clear, but you already knew who you are dealing with.

My research shows that all of the popup ads I'm seeing come from AVG Free's avgui.exe executable, so here is the fix I found to work properly:

http://www.wilderssecurity.com/threads/avg-2015-large-update-popup.382015/

It essentially involves blocking avgui.exe from accessing the internet via the Windows Firewall. This prevents it from calling home to grab the ads to popup on your screen and annoy you into buying AVG.

On my Windows 7 machines, this fix is working well. I see no popup ads from AVG Free whatsoever.

You're welcome. ;)

What would you all reccomend as a replacement for AVG?  I, like all of you and fed up with the new pop up spam campaign by AVG, hoping to find a good free alternative, thank you!
John DoeJohn Doe

Everytime AVG performs an update, these pop-ups come back.  I was able to eliminate these by deleting the folders mentioned above, and had to do so after every update.  The fact that this work-around, and the firewall blocking required to eliminate the unwanted advertisments is ridiculous.

I created an account here strictly to express my extreme anger at this forced advertisment.  AVG being uninstalled as I type this, and will no longer be recommended by me.

This is the real result of your advertising campaign.

Good new every one! AVG have 'solved' the "Your online security is incomplete" pop issue!

As you are all aware, previously, when you clicked "No thanks" on the annoying pop up it disappears but comes back the very next day. This made no sense as you have clearly told them you are not interested in buying their "Protection Pro" yet it continues to offer it - this was very annoying.

No thanks

AVG have finally taken bold action to clear this up. Now, instead of offering a "No thanks" button, they present us with a button saying "Remind me later", meaning they are free to remind us whenever they damn well please.

Remind me later

Sarcasm ended!

I, like most of you, am fed up with their attempts to up sell through these never ending pop ups, however, I am further annoyed at their use of fear mongering language.

The bold sentence "Your online security is incomplete" is clearly carefully designed to install fear in the minds of the more technologically vulnerable and is in itself underhanded. I know many people who would be very alarmed by this message and assume their PC is unsecured.

AVG have had many, many months to sort this unacceptable issue. Apparently the outcome of their careful deliberations is to slightly change the wording of the pop up to be more consistent with their ongoing aggressive marketing campaign.

AVG, after over 10 years with you, I have today begun looking for a more ethical and non-intrusive anti virus solution.

Like some others here, I just created an account for the sole purpose of telling AVG they lost me.  I've had AVG installed on my winblows PC's for a number of years and quite frankly I'm tired of all the hacky crap I have to do to get rid of the non-stop popup ads from AVG.  I'm switching to Panda to see how much greener the grass is over there.

AVG, you guys just don't get it.  IF your "free" product is good enough, it WILL STAND ON IT'S own and sell itself.  You don't have to turn your AntiVirus program into a SPAM FROM HELL portal.

Dear AVG team,

I am using AVG for some years. I was always satisfied with the application and recommended it to my friends. It has always been a good product, with elaborated user interface, simple and comfortable to use, there never has been any trouble neither with the usage of AVG Free Antivirus, nor with its results.

I regret to inform, that now I am about to change my mind, because of irrigating pop ups, which started to show up some time ago. Usually I get two or three pop ups per day. They are large enough to be disturbing and unfortunately do not hide automatically, forcing me to distract from what I am doing and close them by clicking "No, thanks". (Which is a bit ironical, actually, since at such moments I am far from being grateful.)

I seached a way to disable them, but came up with nothing. (The variants proposed above do not solve the problem for me.) Also I found no way to decline that suggestion, despite of the fact that I am not interested in the target product.

I find the new "business campain", as AVG employees refer to it, strange and confusing. In my opinion, it has caused a drop in quality of the product. Being a user, I can say 100% sure, that necessity to see tons of those notifications would not make me any closer to the desicion to buy a feature that I have no need in. It would rather one day make me reject the product as a whole and search for alternatives.

I hope that the marketing team would realize these inconviniences they bring to their loyal users and AVG would become again a nice product to use and to recommend.

(I am leaving my comment in this tread, as I have found no place where I can write my user review or suggestion to the team.)

Kind regards,
Anna.

I just want to add my two cents here as well.  I have been working in this field for over 20 years now.  I have a great many clients.  I checked just for this purpose, and I am currently responsible directly for 513 installs of AVG.  Some are the free version ( smaller groups or individuals) but about half are the paid versions.  I have recommended this product family so many times because I trusted what was being installed on my client's machines. This decision of your company has changed that.  The TRUST is broken.  I know in the grand scheme of things the 200+ paid versions of the software is not really significant.  But I am just one tech who only does this part time.  Someone at your company really needs to do some math here.  You have lost me as a free path to revenue.  Is this ad campaign of yours bringing in more than it is losing?  I rather doubt it.

I agree with all of you, I'm so sick of these ads and if AVG isn't going to do anything about it soon, I'm switching to a different product. This is far from user friendly and doesn't belong in this type of software. I'm sure there are plenty of other methods to generate revenue other than showing us these annoying ads all the time..

AVG, shame on you. I have been a user for at least 5 years.  I have been tracking this thread for 3 months, since before the new year. I gave you the benefit of a doubt. But you obviously don't care what your community thinks, judging by your canned responses. So regretfully, I must inform you that I am uninstalling, and going another direction. So basically stick it up your anal region. Nearly 5 months and you still don't care about these pop ups? Sad.

I understand AVG's intention to finally get some money from their huge customer base that has been using AVG free product. The latest popup that can not be stopped has caused a lot of grief to my young daughter and my wife. So, AVG managed to scare them, but we did not click on the link to upgrade – instead, my family asked me what to do - luckily!

1. If the product is marketed as free - then it should be free. We are not going to pay for it. Charge the money - and be done with it. Us consumers will then decide what to do next.
2. If the installer package did not warn me that I will have to handle the pop-up annoyance after every single restart, then I should not have to face that popup. The pop-up is misleading, it is intrusive, it is malware and uses a typical scaring tactics - it simply should not be there because I did not agree to see it after every reboot. It started to appear after an automated update – I did not agree to it explicitly by no means!
3. Because it is there, and it should not be there and it can not be stopped, I will wait for exactly one week for AVG to stop this criminal behaviour, before I report this to ACCC.

I'm getting the same things. AVG is now adware as far as I'm concerned.

I've been using AVG for 15 years and am shopping for the product I will be replacing it with. Adware has no place in my computer, regardless of whether it's the AVG Free or Paid versions.

AVG, you should all be ashamed of yourselves.

AVG will be uninstalled from my computer by 6pm Eastern US time on Monday, March 21, 2016.

What a brazen, stupid attempt to modifya once great, easy to use, free product. Now it's become spamware. I, too, am unistalling this spamware. I am ashamed I told my family/friends how great it was. You folks at AVG need to get your act together. I don't know who is leading you folks into putting spamware on our PC's but they need to be fired. "Remind Me Later"? Such options will go down in history as corporate arrogance. You folks should relaly be ashamed of yourselves for such foolishness. Grow up. Drop the spamware and return AVG to it's rightful glory.
Dana DougDana Doug
Recieving this same pop-up "Your security is incomplete."  However, whether I press "remind me later", "install now", or even the x in upper right that should close the box - NOTHING HAPPENS.  Basically the pop-up is not only annoying and persistant, but completely unresponsive.  The only way I can even get it off of my screen is to open another avg window, then right click the avg icon on the task bar and sellect "close all windows."  And as has been the complaint of many previous posts, the pop-up just keeps returning anyway.  It is becoming very frustrating.  Please fix this AVG.

Hello,

I am glad I came across this feed, I too have AVG Free Adition on 2 of my computers, 1 of which is my Media Centre, and AVG has this popup which comes up almost every few hours interrupting my Movies. It is starting to piss me off, so what did I do, I contacted the head of Microsoft department and filed a complaint because I disabled ALL NOTIFICATIONS within the AVG Software and also disabled ALL notifications through the Microsoft Action Centre, which should hide ALL Notifications from AVG, but AVG have by-passed this somehow and have violated Microsoft Terms and Conditions and will get a nice letter from their legal team in the comming days/weeks advising them to change their script and remove this notification or they will be persuing legal action against AVG. Kind Regards! Better pass up to your developers ASAP to redo their sneaky little coding of their popup string that by-passes ALL Microsoft Notification Disabling Services!!!

I just wish the popup would include the option to uninstall AVG. At least that would show they're willing to admit that maybe popups are not the best way to encourage people to buy their product. I got AVG Free because I'd heard it was a good product, and at first I was considering buying the premium version. But the endless pop-ups have soured me on the company. I mean, if this is how they operate, what other hidden stuff do they do that's unethical?
Richard JarnaginRichard Jarnagin
Yes, don't waste your time with AVG free any longer.  I've used it for a long time, and I am thankful for the free years of service, but with the new company policy of instrusive ads, I have deleted their software and switched to a free full version of McAfee provided by my ISP (AT&T Uverse).  Problem solved.  Check with your ISP to see if they provide similar free antivirus protection.
A dutch guyA dutch guy
I just made an account out of frustration, as AVG also harrasses me with these rude pop-ups. I already regret the effort it took to make an account. It seems that they do not like this thread, as I got redirected and confronted with stupid ads instead of showing this thread after logging in.

AVG has been the best free antivirus for years. I can't even remember when I started using it. Now the program has gone down a dark path, as it violates the rights of thousands of users. The fact that after more than 6 months nothing has changed, makes me wonder if they really care. In addition, the stupid comments of the Indian customer service, that probably never used the program, annoys me enormously.

I will ask it once more, in the name of all AVG free users: please remove the pop-ups or add an option to completely disable them. I will wait a week and than start uninstalling AVG on all my computers, friends computers etc. I will also contact Microsoft as AVG deceives their previously mentioned Terms And Conditions.

Please let me know whether AVG is actually working on this OR whether we are better off uninstalling the adware completely!

Part of your ad campain, fine. But don't ever interrupt my game to show it to me.

I hope you do something to remedy this problem your popup causes.

And still on the 23 March 2016 this problem is still happeneing. The truth is they are CAPITALISTS AND THEY DON'T WANT TO STOP SENDING YOU THE ADVERTISING POP UPS.AS FAR AS THEY SEE IT,IT'S YOUR FAULT IMO THAT YOU CHOSE TO RUN THE FREE VERSION OF AVG ANTI VIRUS AND BECAUSE IT'S FRE THEY WILL CONTINUE TO PESTER YOU WITH POP UPS UNTIL YOU CAVE IN AND BUY THE FULL PAID FOR VERSION.THAT'S THE TRUTH OF IT IMO THE TRUE ANSWER WOULD BE JUST TO SAY "IT IS BECAUSE IT IS THE FREE VERSION AND WE WILL CONTINUE TO SEND YOU POP UPS UNTIL YOU BUY THE FULL VERSION" WHICH EVEN IF SOME CUSTOMER REPRESENTATIVE DIDN;T KNOW AT FIRST CAN THEN BE SAID BY SOMEONE FROM THE DEVELOPMENT ADVERTISING TEAM.
Claire FirewallClaire Firewall
I'm talking about that's what their opinion is, not mine.Because I realise what I wrote may have been misunderstood, but they don't want to be honest and just admit "It's because it's the Free Version and until you buy the Full Version these Pop-Ups will still continue" - that should've by now have become their standard reply to this.

Hi all, I may have a solution to this annoying ad pop-up issue. If you are using a Wi-Fi router to connect to the internet, then you can add a blocking rule to your routers firewall security. This option will differ from router to router, so have a look for the setting.
All you need to do is add a keyword filter (if this option is available to you), "campaign.avg.com" to your firewall list. And you're done, no more annoying pop ups ;)
Mark WigstonMark Wigston
I prefer not to program out stupid ads while I am trying hard to consentrate on coding someones software.. I paid for AVG and I want a switch to turn the damn ads off..
Casandra CarrCasandra Carr
Tex, is there a way to do that using Windows firewall or a network adapter? I'm not allowed to touch the router because my parents are technologically retarded and think I'm going to destroy their internet simply by setting foot near the thing.
Aard PoohAard Pooh
Yes, the easiest way is to add the address to your Windows Hosts file. Instructions are here:

http://superuser.com/questions/270524/blocking-web-sites-with-windows-firewall
Or if the link is disabled:
1) Open Notepad as administrator (Notepad, right-click, Run As Administrator)
2) Open file: C:/WINDOWS/SYSTEM32/DRIVERS/ETC/HOSTS
3) Add on a new line:
127.0.0.1 campaign.avg.com
4) Save the file.

Another way is to add the actual IP to Windows Firewall itself, but that requires you know the actual numeric IP address (which might change).

I would like to add my 2cents to this rant. Have been using AVG for personal use since perhaps 2006, and installing it to customer PCs since 2013, and was completely satisfied with the product... until the end of 2015 when this popup campaign started. It is extremely annoying and even more confusing for low end PC users to get these popups several times a day, and definitelly pushes me away from using such product that ends up degrading my reputation as an IT technician. I will give a shot with the folder removal suggestion by Charles, and if that doesn't work, then I'm most definitelly switching to Avast, Avira, or even Panda. This thread should definitelly be read by the whole management board of AVG, to help them realize the steep downhill this pop-up campaign is taking their product to. Imagine each IT tech having hundreds/thousands of customers' PCs installed with AVG that are being gradually switched to other sollutions, and multiply that by a number of IT techs in the world that used to adore AVG for it's simplicity and seamless background performance that was it's top value proposition. I think you will get an insanely large number that will simply sink your boat, or push away AVG as a niche product, preferred for aesthetics or color scheme only.
Marj WMarj W
I had been using AVG Free for more than a decade.  The popup ads, legitimate or not, became far too much of a bother.  I tried many things suggested in this forum to stop them to no avail, including removing the folders as Charles had suggested.  That worked for 24 hours and, even without the folders, three popups intruded my tasks in quick sucession last night.  That was the final straw, for me.

I researched other options and learned there is another free antivirus tool for Windows that actually ranked higher through an independent study of factors.  So, my first course of action this morning was to completely uninstall AVG and install a better and less intrusive tool that meets my needs.  My quest for a replacement may not be done yet but, at least I am no longer battling those lame popups.

It is a shame that AVG became so aggressive in their marketing pursuits, really.  The popups really did have a threatening tone, almost as if I had not configured the software to protect my PCs.  I was tricked into activating a trial for something I wouldn't ever need several months ago because the alert said my PC wasn't protected.

You folks at AVG can continue to claim these popups are legitimate marketing campaigns but, darn it, they act move like malware.  With no way to opt out of the campaigns, enough is enough.  I hope you're happy with the loss of consumers to support.

I used to recommend AVG, but I honestly can't anymore. The ceaseless pop-ups and advertisements are impossibly frustrating and constantly interfere with my daily computer usage. I came here to hope and find a way to turn them off, but apparently AVG's staff has no intention of enabling such an option as the above responses prove. How far this once reputable program has fallen, I suppose.

Needless to say, I will be making no purchases from AVG, will not be using any of their free programming, and will not recommend their products ever again.

How sad your support staff must be, forced to lie through their teeth and see their entire jobs reduced from true "customer support" to "wallet-holder placation".

Nick KokoszkaNick Kokoszka
I have just registered on this site just so I can voice my displeasure at the change of direction AVG has decided to take regarding these pop ups.
I have been using AVG Free since it was first released on every PC I have ever owned including recommending it to anyone who ever asked about which Anti-virus software they should go with. Probably would be in the 100s the amount of PCs that use this as a result of my recommendation.
I can't believe after months of negative feedback from customers on this forum nothing has been done about it.
I have no confidence that the pop ups will be removed any time soon so am now looking to go with Avira or Panda. I never had the need to research other security software but now I'm left with no other option.
Would love to see the daily/weekly/monthly stats to show the size of the customer base. It must be dropping like a rock!
Thanks AVG it was fun while it lasted. You've ruined a great product :(

Advertising popups which grab focus make me very uneasy. Is this software antivirus or adware?
I am repeatedly offered the same product "our new VPN" which I do not want.
I am an everyday user and can't be bothered to modify the program to stop these ads.

AVG - please do not reply to this comment. Please instead make advertising optional. If constant popups like this are still in the software when my renewal is up, I will not renew.

Ryan QuinnRyan Quinn

These pop ups kill me.  They interfere with other programs I'm running constantly (The Game mode option works like crap), and I average seeing one just about every hour.  This is a distraction while I'm working or gaming.  These pop ups came out about a version or two back, and have gottten worse with each incarnation of the program.

I just deleted it from my laptop, and decided to explore new AV options.  To the people who dislike what many have said, calling them "entitled", "Whiners", etc.  I think you need to reflect on why people would get upset about this.  Mainly, by installing AVG, you are looking to install a program that keeps other programs off your computer that does exactly what AVG is doing, and spamming you with unwanted.pop-ups.  Free or not, By AVG performing such pop-ups, it defeats the purpose of the software.

Regardless, everyone in this thread needs to realize that the AVG reps responding are from a help desk, most likely somewhere in India, and not from their North American or European offices.  They don't care, and the second rate, off site help desk proves it.  You guys who are unhappy are better off just uninstalling and moving on.

Chris CampbellChris Campbell
Yep ... add me to the list, of another long time AVG user (7+ years) that's annoyed with the crappy popups. I just booted AVG to the curb and installed Avira.  And well, lo and behold, on Avira's first scan, it detected 62 items, that apparently AVG didn't think were a problem. That you AVG for annoying me with your adware, and forcing me to upgrade to a better product ... color me one happy EX-Avg customer.

Antivirus software is meant to get rid of viruses, malware, and so make our lives easier.

Now I feel that by giving us so called "Free" protection - and then leaving us to the mercy of your marketing teams - you, AVG, have been LYING to us. This is an act of betrayal against the confidence we've given you as customers!

But this isn't even a concern for my PC alone. The thing is, I've installed AVG "free" on almost every family or friend's computer I've ever set up. And now, it's bothering each and every one of them! What am I supposed to do?

Obviously, if they couldn't set their own PC's, they can not remove this absurdity by themselves! And yes, this means I'll have to do it MYSELF!

Thank you very much for that, AVG.

Needless to say, if this doesn't stop in a week from now, I'll move on. And I'll also uninstall AVG from every computer I can get my hands on. You're on the right track to losing my confidence.

I have been a loyal AVG user for many years now. However today is the day it stops.

AVG has gone overnight from being my go-to antivirus to adware.

Combine this with unhelpful staff responses(In another thread, a staff member recommended that we ignore the popups, wtf?), and my descision has been sealed to switch to Avira Antivirus, and I suggest everyone else do the same.

I own and operate a local computer service business. For years we have been happy promoting AVG products to all of our clients. We have been installing AVG free on residential client's computers. We let our clients know they have the option of purchasing it for the extra protection. In the past year, AVG Free has become very intrusive with ads. The product has been giving multiple popups a day. We are now promoting Eset products because we have received so many complaints from our clients about AVG. We also push Eset for businesses solutions too. AVG at one time had a good thing going and it worked well for them, putting their products on the top of the list. But with the bombarding ads from their most productive promotional product, they have slipped to the bottom of that list. They have forgotten what got their name out there and how the free version has singly helped them dominate the market. I get you have to sell the product, you have to make money. What I don’t get how you possibly think worrying the crap out of people is going to keep a good name to your products.

As a PAID subscriber, I do not appreciate the pop-up SPAM that AVG now generates within my PAID version (did I mention, PAID?). When my subscription expires (in 2017) I will be dropping AVG like a bad habit; after giving it bad reviews on amazon, and through social media.

I created an account just to say I'm fed up with AVG and finally uninstalled their shitty adware after countless years of use.  Done with their intrusive ad pop ups several times per day!  Sort of ironic that a anti-virus software program is actually responsible for the worst adware on my pc.  I tried removing folders according to Charles Boyce suggestion, but it didn't work, so good bye AVG, au revoir, good riddance.  Looks like you're driving a successful campaign forcing everyone to your competition, congrats!  And don't bother responding AVG cs with your canned robotic pathetic responses, they're a joke, and it just adds fuel to the already burning inferno.  And those of you pointing fingers saying we're whining and entitled, enjoy your intrusive adware, you deserve every bit of it!  Hello Avira or Panda.

Like the others above, I too am fed up with the annoying popup ads (which have become nearly constant). I am uninstalling your software in favor of something less 'spammy'. The sad thing is, after a couple of unobtrusive reminders I probably would have purchased your program in a few weeks when I had the money - until you annoyed me to death with your enormous popup ads.  Now I'm abandoning you on principle alone.  Too bad you chose to ruin a really nice thing.

I agree with others. I am very disappointed. I have been using AVG for over 10 years on all my home computers and phone, and I have suggested it to my friends in the past, but I can use it no longer. I understand AVG is a free software that tries to increase their income with these ads, but it has gone too far. Recently I have seen about one ad every day on each of my computers (today I saw two at a time on the same PC) and a couple of times an ad has popped up and crashed to desktop an open computer game. My multiplayer friends won't like that.
I understand people have started complaining about this last year and the AVG team keeps apologising and promising to address this issue to the development team, but several months have passed and no change.

Almost 8 months since the OP,

Looks like avg hasn't fixed anything. This post has made me absolutely certain that I am ready to kick AVG to the curb. My family has been using AVG, both paid and free versions on our various computers since '06. It's over now, these ads are intrusive and if even paying for the program can't rid of them, why would I want this?

Good buy, AVG. Giving the fact how arrogant you are, I'd rather pay someone else.

Been recommending AVG to others for years, installed it on all the computers in my digital cafe teaching resource........due to these pop ups I will no longer be recommending it to anyone and will be uninstalling it from all machines under my supervision....A good product ruined

good bye avg, we've had some good years together... but after reading your replies in this thread it is clear your spam is here to stay.... i however will be moving to elsewhere and leaving your adware behind.

Dear AVG, it is completely unacceptable to force popups onto users, especially PAID users of your software.  This makes your software no better than the junk it is supposed to protect people from.

I have been a loyal AVG customer since at least 2002, but I am getting more and more frustrated with the SPAMMY behaviour of your company.  I will now seek alternative AV protection and will no longer recommend, nor purchase your software.

Its always a shame when a good product is reduced to SPAMWARE.
Tamra RossTamra Ross
Just adding my voice here.  I've used AVG free on my laptop and secondary computer for years.  I have purchased AVG products for my main computer and systems at work, so I'm a pretty loyal user.  I 100% accept that when you use the free version AVG will want to send you some ads to try to get you to buy.  That is FINE.  But I am uninstalling AVG from all systems today because the number of ads is off the rails now, and they are coming up in my system tray, which is very precious real estate.  AVG, you took it much much too far.  I've switched products and won't buy AVG again for my business machines.  See ya.

I fully agree with this ridiculousness of the ad campaigns. I've been a loyal user of AVG for years, and this is the worst. I logged on here to find a solution to the problem of constant pop-ups on my desktop from AVG, and am incredibly disappointed to hear that AVG does not officially allow disabling these pop-ups.

AVG, best of luck - hopefully the number of customers you're getting through these ad campaigns outweighs the tremendous number of loyal customers you're losing.

I think everything has been said already, but I'd like to thank AVG for all these years you've kept me secure. Now the time has come for me to abandon ship. The never-ending ads and this thread just makes me feel a bit hopeless. I hope it's a phase and whoever is currently taking the company in this direction has a change of heart. But for me:

This is riduculous. Like many of the commenters here, I've been using AVG and installing it on other's computers for many years and am just sick of these popups. Don't ask me what popup, what version etc because you know that information isn't actually being used. Your pointless setting to diable notifications is a sham. Today was the final tipping point. THREE popups at once!!!!! Goodbye AVG, I hope Panda and Avira add your software to their adware lists.

Another long time user here, happy until recently.  Well, AVG had a good run but I think it's going down.  One popup a week I could tolerate and understand, but multiple popups per day is unacceptable.  The company has had plenty of time to respond to the user base but has not.  If anything the frequency of popups has continued to increase.  I had not been aware of Avira until reading this thread, and have already switched to it after checking out a few reviews.

And another long-term user who has just registered to say goodbye.

I've been using PCs and software since the release of the original IBM PC all those years ago. Never have I seen a compnay use such despicable advertising practices.

Your "product" has become nothing more than incessant nag-ware.

Thanks to all the users of this forum who suggested ditching AVG for Avira. I'm much happier now.

Well, finally got tired of all of the Pop ups from AVG so I thought I would search to see if there are options to turn off ALL pop ups. Seems others are as frustrated as I am with AVG and this pop up garbage. I have decided to go to a paid software to get rid of AVG Free and thier constant pop ups, but it will NOT be AVG. Lost all interest in working with AVG or any of their software. Based on Foo's post above, I may check out Avira.

Thanks users!

As the most people here, i only created an account to share my growing dissatisfaction about these Pop Ups with you all and the responsible programmers... I think that at the same was a grow of new people registering at this forum, however was the same grow for people uninstalling AVG unfortunately...

Signed up just to comment... Already looked at this thread a few days ago to deal with these spam ads that AVG is putting up at random times.

I've had these pop-ups interrupt in the middle of me doing something important and MINIMIZE MY PROGRAMS so I am forced to see this SPAM!

Did what one of the commenters suggested and deleted the Awacs, Banners, Tuneup folders... Took care of the problem for a day.  Turned my computer on- First thing is ANOTHER AVG AD SPAM talking about their march madness sale.  Went to delete the Awacs, Banners, Tuneup folders again... Oh- They're not there.  Well I guess that's not a solution anymore.

AVG IS updating so they can keep delivering us their own brand of ad-ware.

I have been using AVG for the better part of a decade now.  That's all over.  F this malware with it's pop-ups.  I am in the process of uninstalling Ad-VG and installing Panda on all the computers in my home.  I will wipe this sh*t from my computers with extreme predjudice.  I will add their website, company name, product names, etc to block lists in my email, browsers, router, and firewall.  After today, I won't even be able to visit AVG's website (not that I would want to ever again anyways.)

GOODBYE AND GOOD RIDDANCE AVG!

YOU ARE LOSING CUSTOMERS AND DON'T EVEN CARE!

IF YOU'RE SO F*CKING CONCERNED ABOUT PEOPLE PAYING FOR YOUR SOFTWARE THAT YOU HAVE TO HARASS US CONSTANTLY WITH SPAM ADVERTISEMENTS THEN DON'T OFFER A FREE VERSION IN THE FIRST PLACE!!!

After installing the free version of AVG I've been booted out of my games multiple times due to these horrible popups, which I just can't deal with. The trick for removing the popups by deleting their related folders no longer works. What a shame, AVG used to be so great, too.

I will be switching to Avira as well. Not only is it faster, it's less bloaty overall and seems to provide better, more organized protection without all the extra unnecessary junkware.

I started this accound with an email I only use to give to people and sites I hate or don't care about getting spam from because I NEVER check it. I do this because I do not TRUST AVG antivirus with my real email, though I'm sure they have it from tracking and storing my browsing data anyway.

I am uninstalling AVG. Shouldn't need to explain why.

Don't bother with a copy/paste customer service replly as I will not be visiting this site again and never check this email. It will fall on deaf ears like all of your garbage replies here.

Registered an account just to add my 2 cents - this is insanely stupid and all this 66% off campaign is doing is making me decide to uninstall AVG and never use it again. These popups have caused some of my applications to crash and made me lose my data. I have used AVG for at least 8 years and now I'm done. Now I'm considering paying for an antivirus solution but I definitely won't go with AVG because I don't trust them to not spam me with marketing campaigns.

Registered and took the time just tell AVG "WHAT IN THE F'ING HELL ARE YOU DOING?!"

I deleted the folders to stop the pop ups which were atrocious, but am now actively looking for a better solution. I've used AVG for years and years and always recommended them. Definitely not now.  Adware is NOT the answer. The fact I'm reading PAID customers get the same ads is just downright insulting. WOW. Way to screw up your reputation and company image guys. You have some bad leadership right now.

Deleting AVG after using it for years as well. I used to recommend this program to people as well. The popups are out of control. The marketing is invasive. They seem to ignore all the complaints. Sorry AVG, I don't want to load your spyware on my computer. It's scary to see what extents they are going to to try to push their products. 'Desperate' seems to be the best way to describe it.

I can't handle the pop-ups.  I've used AVG for years, and recommended it often, but I'll be looking for other offerings.

I understand that I'm using the free version, but you are forcing more ads down my throat than most malware you are trying to protect me from.

It's a shame AVG has come to this.

I run AVG internet security 2015, 2015.0.6189 on the PC i'm currently on. All are paid versions.
I'm getting pop up adverts on all computers including my home computer while playing games, which the pop up advert minimises the game i'm playing.

Yes I have the AVG advisor notifications box unchecked and the game mode enabled and it is still happening.

Judging by the auto bot responses in this thread in reply to many other users with the same problem, it is clear that AVG is no longer a internet security program. It is now adware. I paid for AVG to prevent pop up adverts. I should be able disable them within the paid version.

I can see by this thread that this problem has been going on for months so clearly, you will do nothing to prevent AVG internet security from being adware.
Your crappy adware is being uninstalled and replaced with a product from a company that removes and prevents unwanted pop up adverts.

STUFF YOU AVG. Hope your immoral adware company goes bankrupt. Good riddance to bad adware.

I've been having this issue with the AVG free edition over the last 3 months as well. AVG free used to be the best for personal home use and this constant push with pop-ups to upgrade to a paid version and threatening that my protection is incomplete trying to scare me into paying is unacceptable.

I am actually an account manager for a VAR (Value Added Reseller) and I sell AVG business but now I'm positioning Kaspersky or TrendMicro to my clients. I am also uninstalling AVG and all my friends who are complaining about the pop-ups and to who I've recommended AVG to over the last ten years are also going to uninstall AVG and follow my next recommendations. Goodbye AVG.

Hoped AVG will come to their senses. Gave them a week to see if this spamming will stop. Of course, the chances were slim - hence I have reported this illegal activity to ACCC and will see what they are going to do...

To help others molested by the spamming, I have few suggestions with screen-captures.
1. To stop spamming on all PC's / laptops connecting to a router which settings you can access (e.g. your home router), go to the WebServer of the router, Block Sites, and enter: campaign.avg.com

blcok campaign.avg.com at your router

2. To stop the illegal spamming outside your home, if for example you take the laptop to UNI and use their hotspot for internet access, go to:   C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc\hosts.txt    and enter: 127.0.0.1  campaign.avg.com  .Make sure that you have administrator rights to modify this hosts.txt file.

hosts file

Hope this helps. This will stop all iligal spamming by AVG. Hopefully ACCC will do something about this as well...

This is crazy. I was watching a YouTube video in *fullscreen* and TWO popups were displayed on top of it.

I'm seeing at least 2 or 3 popups every single day now. The worst thing about this is that when you dismiss an ad, it just comes back later. If I'm not interested, then I'm not going to change my mind a day later.

If this doesn't change within the next ~10 days or so, I'm going to install another AV.

Before you ask, yes I have unticked ALL the notification boxes. It's a shame AVG used to be such a good product, but now with the nagging I'm sure they will lose more customers than they will gain. I used Charles Boyce's recommendation and will see if that resolves my issues with these obnoxious pop-ups. I have a paid version of AVG and it's truly annoying that I can't just deselect and not be subjected to the pop-ups. I've had this happen when streaming movies from my laptop to the TV. HELLOOO bad timing! Just don't. My brother-in-law, a tech guy, suggested AVG to me several years back and prior to this installation within the last few months to my new laptop, I've been happy with AVG. I hope the AVG team takes the feedback and uses it for good, not for evil. Listen to your customers. If not the free ones, at least the PAYING ones.

I have an aware problem and AVG say it is beyond their scope. Reading all these complaints I wonder if AVG have sent out the aware to help with their AVG pro campaign. I have been using AVG for years and have always found it clean, trouble free and professional, BUT NOT ANY MORE.

I get the feeling that the old reliable AVG has been sold to someone underhand, sneaky andiladly least bordering on something illegal.

Sadly disappointed and pleased I did not pay for it.

BTW "free" means free to users of AVG. They were paid by various computer companies.

I came to that thread because a daily pop-up suggesting my security is not complete and I don't even have the option for No Thanks. I can just install ot 'Remind me later'.

It is really annoying and actually I use just as much as I can of the program, as turning on any of the options else would cause conflicts with the rest of my system.
I was annoyed by the pop-ups, but I'm even more annoyed now by the staffs responds.

I know that's now common, but I refuse to put up with this.
I'm already using other products and AVG would be no longer recommended.

If it isn't obvious by now, AVG has been trying to push their share value down as much as possible for the 500,000 share buyback to cover their employee stock options? Duh. And they hired a new CFO on the same day. Huh. Go figure?

They really don't care about a bunch of people whining about the Free Version support and how awful it is to get popups. After shares are bought back, problems will be fixed. Until then good luck.

At least the AVG support staff have stopped replying to posts with their pitiful suggestions etc.

I don't think that AVG are being very smart.  There are many folks such as myself who add AVG to clients PCs - often these clients do accept an upgrade to the paid for version when renewal is required.  Now in all honesty I just cant put this c**p on clients PCs any more as it damages my reputation too.

One has to wonder sometimes how smart the guys are on the other end of this - suspect techies in total isolation.  Not unique to AVG,  some of MS ideas on Win 1o0 are pretty crazy too.

I have been paying for AVG Internet Security for 5 PCs since 2011. I cannot stop promotional pop-ups via notifications in its Control Panel. AVG support told me I could remove them by re-installing. Not true - and it was a waste of my time!
As I have just paid my subscription, I will continue with AVG until it is time to renew. In the meantime, it seems I can stop the popups in AVG Internet Security by blocking avgui.exe in AVG's own firewall!

AVG Panel --> Firewall --> Settings --> Advanced Settings --> Applications
Look for 'AVG User Interface', which is AVGUI.EXE
Select this and edit it to change settings to Block

This seems to work so far, but the appearance of AVG's promotional popups appears to be random. If it is a solution, one might ask why AVG support has not passed this on to users.

AVG has lost focus on what made them great. Tried many ways to remove their pop ups only to have them return. At our last quarterly meeting someone recommended a change from AVG to Panda for our paid accounts at work and no one objected. I'll be going with another anti-virus program as well. It was great while it lasted AVG, thanks for 7 years of excellent service.

That's it. i am officially out. This issue has been going on for years, and all AVG manage to spew out is that they believe it is legitimate business to vomit my computer full of nag screens LITERALLY every 3 minutes (i timed it). The nag screen steals focus from games, from everything.

AVG has in my view completed its transition from antui-virus software to just plain a virus. A software that spits out unwanted text literally every three minutes, is malware, a virus.

Goddbye for good, I am also uninstalling on mobile where I paid for it, I cannot in good conscience support a company that behaves like this.
_ __ _
I installed the free product; really like it. Recommended to others, but, your uncontrollable nag prompts are THE reason you are losing potential AND existing customers. I simply refuse to buy-in to the purchase of products that nag without an option to completely shut it off.

Campaign through my registered email address if you must, I actually read those. Don't do it within your own product without leaving your customer an option to turn it off!

it's bad practice - no matter who's telling you different (looking at you marketing/sales team).

Litmus test: how many of your own employees refuse to use your own product for the same reason; might want to check on that ;)

Lost customers = lost revenue = lost jobs = company out of business.

I've really had it with this pervasive software industry mentality. There are plenty of options out there for customers and you are simply driving them away. Choose to stop the madness now and instead become the torch bearer for better business practice and customer satisfaction!

I have been a paid customer of AVG for 10 years or so. But enough is enough. This constant ad pop campain of yours is making you loose another long term client. I tried now to block the avggui.exe in the firewall setting. If this does not stop the pop ups, then its bye bye AVG. Did a "Best 10 anti virus programs 2016" search. Interesting to note, that on 3 different tech sites including PC mag AVG is not even listed in the top 10. Go figure. If I get one more pop up, as of now, then AVG is gone forever.

Why would I post a screenshot? That has been done many times on this thread by other unhappy client / free users. This ad pop up campain is not a news flash. It was likely dreamed up by AVG marketing dept. Approved by the board and developed by your tech dept. You know what we are talking about. Screenshot will not solve this this problem, specially if it is true that an AVG restores folders people are trying to delete to stop this crap.

As per @Charles Boyce some time ago

Original concerns in this thread were posted on August 13, 2015. Still no improvements on 14th May 2016, and the same pointless responses from AVG "staff". I, like many others have got fed up with these pop ups. AVG is now gone from my system in favour of some of the other suggestions of antivirus programs in this forum. I would recommend that everyone finding this thread does the same. I will no longer recommend anyone should use AVG as I used to, because quite aside from the pop ups, the feedback from AVG themselves is poorly inadaquate on this subject. Good riddance.

We have always recommendet AVG Free to our customers.
Since this is the only language you understand.
Because of this popup situation we have removed our AVG Free affiliate links from our website, and have stopped recommending it to our customers.
Also we have removed AVG from our machines and switched to a different Anti Virus program

We advise everyone to do the same since this is just utterly ridiculous.

The owners at AVG are utterly obsessed with sales, to the complete disregard of the user experience.
And their single-minded copy & paste response to post a screenshot at any report you ever send to AVG, even if all the information they need is clearly communicated, spells that big business has moved offshore to some small place where they don't understand english very well.
It's doom and gloom for AVG I think.

@AVG you said on August 23, 2015, that this was for a limited period, but as of May16, 2016 it's still ongoing. However, making money usually goes hand in hand with customer satisfaction, so I stuggle to follow your logic. It makes me sad that, what used to be a good, simple, user friendly piece of software, has become an unbearable piece of useless adware.
I wasn't even willing to use my primary email, as I would probably just recieve an endless stream of spam - this is what i've come to expect from AVG...

I have used AVG for many years, installed it on numerous pc's, and recommended it to customers for years. Needless to say, that is no longer the case. To be honest, it has annoyed me since the PC TuneUp ads started, but this is the final straw.

After 9 months it is painfully obvious that you don't giva a sh*t.
Goodbye AVG

The problem I don't think these popups make them money, rather push people away. even if let say I decide to open a company would I go to buy a software from a company that nagged me for it and didn't even care for customer satisfaction?  of course not.  for us who use it at home, we're unlikely to upgrade now. because why? especially if I have windows 10 or 7 or 8.  it's not that urgent to have anti-virus as before.  and there are a lot of alternatives. make your popups smart and not nagging. I don't mind sometimes. but not several times a day with a tricky message that looks like update message, but actually free trial.   be professional.
Goodbye AVGGoodbye AVG
I just set up an AVG account for the sole purpose of saying goodbye. I have been with AVG since the very early days and have generally been pleased with their performance and level of trust. But in the last year or so, AVG's credibility has been badly compromised in my opinion. It started with the controversy in September 2015, when AVG announced that it would start tracking users and analyzing their data in order to sell it to the advertising industry (see AVG in Wikipedia). I'm sure AVG will loudly proclaim that users' personal data is never passed on. You can believe that if you want. But the whole idea seems somewhat disingenuous coming from a company / product whose sole business model is to protect people. There have been a couple other issues along the way, but mostly tolerable. However, the latest thing is these tacky, annoying and perpetual advertising popups discussed in many comments above. Most people regard these as little more than adware - something AVG claims to protect against. The last straw happened this morning when a piece of AVG advertising popped up and temporarily took control of my PC, interrupting e-mail productivity. After a several months of tolerance, I took the plunge and removed AVG from my PC and installed Avast, which was a surprisingly quick and easy process. I guess over the years I had become conditioned to how pushy AVG has become. Avast seems quite a bit more relaxed and unbloated. If you're frustrated with AVG, give Avast a try. (Like AVG, Avast also has 200million users, if that means anything.) It is unlikely that AVG will revise its tactics anytime soon. This approach seems to be their new corporate character / personality. Not for me. Goodbye AVG.

Really AVG? Your popup is now showing up THREE TIMES A DAY. It is worse than the adware and the malware I was trying to prevent. Not only that, but the close buttons are disabled so I cannot even close it when it pops up. I now have open the task manager to "end task" to get it to close.
I actually considered PURCHASING a website blocker to PREVENT AVG access to campaign.avg.com (2.20.27.2) so that I could block the popup.
I can understand having ads in the GUI but to have a popup that is more pervasive than malware from pron sites...really guys.
I created this user account with the sole purpose of telling AVG to piss off.
Blah NowaySmithBlah NowaySmith
I created just to say I'm moving to another software, too. They have officially gone off the rails, I have been getting a popup every five minutes now. I can't stop them, and I can't do anything on the computer with them without being repeatedly interrupted. Unacceptable. I don't know who you guys have in your advertisement department at AVG, but fire all of them, because they're doing nothing but driving away customers who were at one point loyal. Over the years I've used both paid and free protection, but you won't be getting anything else from me, and you only have yourselves to blame.

I am very unhappy with AVGs current sales tactics. What happened today was a lousy trick. I was working on a customers computer, and a pop up stated that an "Update" was available for AVG. Thinking it was an update to the EXISTING program- AVG Free, I clicked to find out more. Instead of information, I got an AUTOMATIC upgrade to AVG Internet Security Trial- NO warning, NO explanation first, just an un-stoppable install. After reboot, I has to uninstall AVG to get back to AVG Free. That was a DIRTY, UNDERHANDED, CHEAP trick to install the trial. I can see how my customers have been tricked in the past. I install AVG Free for MANY customers. Some have come back to me with paid versions of AVG, and when I ask, EVERY ONE of them said that the program said it expired and HAD to be paid for. SO, they were tricked into the trial, and did not know that the only way to go back is by starting to UNINSTALL to get the option to go back to Free. Not ONE customer has ever told me that they DECIDED to switch to the paid version because they wanted to. They all said they had no choice. There are many other pop up messages that lead to sales pitches for paid software such as performance repair, web tune up programs, etc. Unless AVG stops these kinds of unethical, devious sales methods, I will no longer be installing AVG for my customers.
Mohamed OthmanMohamed Othman
I can't imagin that after all these millions of complaints, not just here but in various sites on the Internet, the AVG team is still giving a deaf ear to its customers.
They claim that these ads are "legitimate"! What on earth is legitimate about those unsolicited pop-ups? I'll start an anti-AVG campaign soon and I'll keep you updated on where to post.
I believe that unless they lose customers dramatically they will always react stupidly, and will continue to ask for a screen shot!!!!!
John SnowJohn Snow
I can handle the odd popup if it goes away. But recently the AVG popup has stopped responding when I click close or no thanks. Not only that, it buggers up Windows Explorer and a few other apps, which just appear not open. At first I blamed Windows 10, but after running some diagnostics which confirmed Windows 10 was set up and working fine, I had a closer look at AVG. I can't believe how many processes they run. Anyway, I just started ending AVG tasks (sorry can't remember which ones) and after hitting about three, the popup closed and all the blocked apps (Windows Explorer, Firefox and Word) just burst open on my screen.

It doesn't matter which process it was. What matters is that AVG is not only interferring with games but also apps used in day to day business activities. So for me it has become a liability and too risky to leave on a business machine. I'll be joining the flock and trying something else.

Well, this is what happens when Bean Counters get in the way of good technology and programs.  They turn the cow into hamburger and milk the poor thing to death.  End of the road.  We can see it happening with Windows bringing 8 in thinking everyone would be pleased to have their computer turned into the interface of a mobile phone.  What are these idiots thinking??
First of all if an company in India did buy AVG then it is doomed.  Their exploits and thinking have eroded all common considerations of the customer base because they just have adopted shot sighted "business plan" that as usual will kill anything to make a quick turn around off of it.
I've been installing AVG in client's computers for at least 10 years and this is coming to the point where I have to change products.  This is so needless.  So inconsiderate and so typical of what you see today, companies commiting suicide because crazy business concepts get in the way of a good product.

John SnowJohn Snow
By way of follow up, it happened again this morning and I took a screen shot of the running processes. The ones I had to stop were AVG User Interface (32 bit), and I had to stop both of them in order to kill the popup and to enable file explorer to open.

I'm commenting here NOT because of the popups being bad or wrong. I want to offer a suggestion.  Stop using the word UPDATE and UPGRADE in the popups.  I do a lot of technical support for seniors and those who don't understand all the messages popping up on their computers. I spend hours uninstalling the trial version and re-installing the free edition. All because the pop-ups are confused with FREE add-ons or FREE updates or even confused with the daily updates of the virus databse. I waste hours of my day doing this. I know your company wants to sell us a product, not give away your product for free, but everytime another of my clients/friends clicks on UPGRADE they end up with a trial version (or some add-on that costs money). Then I get a call sometime in the next 30 days or after the trial expires with them being worried that they are at risk, etc. Make the pop-ups more clear that by accepting the pop-up it will cost them money. Or make the "No Thanks" bigger. I'm not against your need to market your products to us free users, but please stop wasting my time because you are mis-wording your pop-ups and people endup downloading and installed trial versions. Thanks, I stil recommend your free AND paid products -- they still beat other company's products hands-down.

I too am a computer tech having the same issues everyone on this thread has had. I have imaged hundreds if not thousands of computers and always added AVG to the install list. Like many others I have created an account to way in and say goodbye. I stopped adding AVG to new computers late in 2015 because of the popup issue. I understand the need to make money, however in these attempts to make money you have broken your flagship product. There are too many free tools that can do what AVG does which forces your loyal customers to stop preaching AVG and jump ship. We had a good 15 years or so together AVG, good luck!  Ciao!

So after months of constant pop ups asking me to upgrade my AVG package came a week of rest...

Then every day for the past week I have been asked "Would you like to upgrade your experience" and every day I have said no.

Today I was asked again by AVG would you like to upgrade, this time I said yes.

I uninstalled AVG and installed Avira.

Problem solved.

I've seen sevaral treads like this on this forum, and indeed, I feel like AVG has swithed sides.  They are no longer better than the stuff they fight against.  They obviously think it's ok to keep bugging us with annoying popups (outside the GUI) calling their offers upgrades etc. whilst it clearly is pure marketing.  Even the paid version gets this garbage btw.  I'm a computer technician, installing AVG at client PC's for years, but since a year or so I noticed a change in AVG's policy making me to stop doing that (choosing AVG).  I swithed to Panda for new clients first, but am now actively removing AVG from several clients, since they too are sick of this "temporary" spam.  Temporary or not, free version of not, spam is spam !

AVG Corporation:

These latest changes, both as a corporation and as a software product, concerning the pop-ups, indicate how you'v lost direction as a company.  Regardless of whether the ads are for self-promotion or promotion of 3rd party software, IT IS STILL ADWARE.  This is a policy that is going to make you lose millions of users if course is not changed.

Another point.  Having your staff post response after response which repeats the words "regret", "apologize", "sorry" and "understand" in the first couple sentences, while at the same time NOTHING is being done to correct the issue, only demonstrates that your CSR (Customer Service Rep.) training is being followed to the letter but by doing so you are turning people off.

In fact, the ONLY person from AVG technologies who didn't respond with one of the previous keywords was "Jan", whom I'll presume is at a management level and actually has the authority to think, unlike the army of Indian minions who are programmed to tick the box for each e-mail.

Like many of the other people who have commented here, I also only created my account so that I could express my displeasure with the new corporate policies and announcing that I am UNINSTALLING AVG and moving on to a competitor's product.

Like many others above, I too am a long time user of AVG Free, in fact I believe I have been using it ever since it was first released and was known as the best free anti-virus software available.
I too am in the IT industry and for many MANY years have recommended AVG Free to hundreds of people. It is very sad that AVG has lost its way and now continually interrupts the user with pop-up advertising.
Years ago there were few if any alternatives and AVG may have got away with annoying their users like this, this is not the case now though.
I almost never sign up to make posts like this, but given my history with AVG I signed up to give feedback and say good-bye. AVG needs to realise that for every customer saying they are leaving there will be 1000+ customers who just leave without saying "good-bye".
I fear that if AVG does not reassess their ways they will spiral out of existence.
Good luck and good-bye AVG. I'm going to a better (add free) place!

I tried deleting the folders mentioned a couple of times but that did not kill the latest stupid pop-up offering some upgrade to some 'Internet Security', whatever the hell that is (don't know, don't care). What I did note however was that when that popped up again (much to my annoyance) was that in Task Manager there was a process called 'campaign.avg.com blah blah...'. So, the ad itself apparently is not some static code in the application itself but merely a vehicle to show some web content in that window.
Go to C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc and find the hosts file. Open in Notepad. At the bottom add this line:

127.0.0.1 campaign.avg.com

Save

So far the pop-up hasn't activated again, probably due to there being no content accessible for display.

If this doesn't work, goodbye AVG. No more chances. This is an incredibly ill-concieved ad campaign that will crash your business like it crashed my desktop.

Same here, I am getting daily (at least once, sometimes multiple) advertising popups to pursuade me to upgrade or whatever. Seriously, I get that it's a free program and you'll have to accept SOME advertising SOMETIMES. But a) this ammount of advertising didn't use to be in earlier free versions of AVG. And if, after seeing advertising on the websites, during the install and multiple times after that, I still decide to stick with the limited protection of the Free version; why do they think daily popups, for eternity, are going to persuade me? I already went into the setting and disabled ALL system tray popups, but I still get system tray popups, which is driving me insane. Seriously, leave me the heck alone and stop spamming me! Not only is it a daily nuisance in itself, but sometimes they popup when you are running another program or game, or on my laptop that I use as a media server, when I am sitting on the couch watching a movie, and I have to get up and walk over to the machine to close another stupid popup. I have been using AVG for years with great satisfaction about the product itself, but I am seriously considering leaving AVG and never coming back if this problem does not get resolved.
John DoeJohn Doe
I've put up with these damn popups long enough. Just had 3 popups within 10 minutes of each other interrupt and minimize a fullscreen application, despite "Display system tray notifications" being disabled and "Game Mode" enabled. Created this account just to let you know you've lost another customer permanently, and I will no longer recommend or install AVG on any computer I manage ever again. Good riddance.

Well I've scanned down the comments and responses here from Aug 15 to date and it's all a sorry tale.  I've had AVG on three computers for years and have been recently completely sickened off by these pop ups.  I've Googled for solutions, I've tried solutions and nothing has worked and now I see from this thread I've just been wasting my valuable time. In fact AVG and their attitude towards their customers has wasted my time, and frankly my time is not theirs to waste. So as others above, I've created an AVG account just so that I can add my annoyed comment to the many.  It's going.  After all these years AVG can go take a hike.  Never again.  Compounded by the inane AVG responses, treating us like we're stupid.  We know what they are doing, they know what they are doing, all we want is an opt out.  Other free anti-v are mentioned here and that's where I'm going, going, going, gone.

Hey AVG! I only went to the trouble of making this account to let you know that I'm uninstalling your useless, application hijacking, pop-up causing, advertizing riddled "antivirus" software.

Isn't AVG supposed to prevent things like adware and popups? Has your roster of upper management corporate clowns become infected themselves with neo-consumerist advertizing salesmen? How do you not realize that designing a program to do percisely what it's supposed to prevent will make people turn away from it, entirely? Your "anti-pop-up-adware-prevention" program is giving me pop-ups with things like "STOP POP-UPS NOW! ONLY $54.95!"

.. and now for the clusterf@%k that I'm sure will be trying to uninstall your piece of trash software.

Just reset my password (didn't even know I had an account) to thank Les Sharp for his answer. The pop ups seem to have stopped for more than 24 hours, here's hoping it carries on like this. If it doesn't then I guess I'm also out. Hopefully AVG doesn't delete his answer because it disables something that's supposedly impossible to disable.

Blocking URLs helped a lot to get rid of AVG solicited spam, but not 100%. www,avg.com IP does not need resolve, it is probably implanted as IP in the code. One should block the IP address. Below is full block list:
REJECT loc net:www.avg.com
REJECT loc net:104.87.4.122
REJECT loc net:93.184.217.9
REJECT loc net:static.avg.com
REJECT loc net:campaign.avg.com
REJECT loc net:download-webtuneup.avg.com
REJECT loc net:cmp.avg.com
REJECT loc net:stats.avg.com
But the real solution is to replace AVG. After all the software is used to do some job, giving the idiots from AVG support and the impudent attitude of the whole company, I can imagine what is in the code . . .

I'm having these popups constantly too even though I've disabled notifications and clicked "No thanks" to them. This is unacceptable, AVG has become adware itself. I've been using AVG since I purchased my first very own computer, which is like 10+ years ago.

After over a decade of using AVG today I have uninstalled it on all my machines, due to the incessant pop ups.

What was once a light weight great AV has now become an over bloated piece of adware.

Shame on your marketing team & development team.

You should be embarressed for treating people, who have stuck by you for years and promoted your product via word of mouth, in the way you have on this thread. You are basically saying the free version is now adware and to remove the ads you must pay. Well no, most of your current 200 million users might be noobs but the rest of us that are IT litterate will simply uninstall and never give your scamm company a penny.

Good marketing makes people want to pay for a product, not forces them to.

So long and thanks for all the fish, good riddence AVG team.

Dear AVG:
Cannot disable those infuriating advertising popups. The usual system tray manipulation does not work, as you of course are aware.
Did you think that by violating the concept of blocking popups by bombarding your users with your own popups we would be compelled to buy something from you? What confidence could we have that buying your products would protect us from your arrogant ad campaign? We are not idiots.

Wow, so i'm not the only one fed up of AVG corporate policy, i have been a paying AVG customer for more than 10 years, i figured after 2 years of using the free product i should support the AVG team buy getting the paid for version, now i just feel sad that all the hard work by the origional software writers of this product has been reduced to this.
AVG please listen to your customers, stop forcing all this rubbish at us and concentrate on making a good reliable AV program.  Nero burning ROM did what you are doing and see where they are now!
The popups are the tip of the iceberg, this policy of pushing 'other products' has been in place for several years now despite customer complaints, so unless there is a change of management at AVG i do not see any change in sight.  Like others, AVG have had fair warning, i'm not renewing my licence either.

As an update - it's been approx. 2weeks since uninstalling AVG and installing Avast. And strangely, there have been no pop-ups, ads, messages, or any other form of unwanted marketing. My machines also seem less impeded by resource-hungry processes at start-up. Is it possible that AVG's behavior and performance are not actually the market norms as they suggest?

Oh well, as long as they are "sorry for the inconvenience caused" and are willing to continue graciously accepting screenshots from their frustrated users, all is good. After all, the constant unwanted pop-ups are all part of the marketing plan that ultimately funds the free version that YOU are currently enjoying. So just be grateful that AVG has given you the privilege of being one of their customers.

If you have already said goodbye to AVG, then sadly you can no longer call yourself a customer. But on a positive note, this message board does become much more entertaining to read!

I'm not going to whine - just vote with my feet. I've been using AVG since the year dot, (I use a paid for copy), and have a free pen to prove it, but I've also had enough of the annoying pop-ups and I'm also sick of getting calls from people I provide support to about the same thing so I shan't be renewing my subscription and where my advice to people used to be "download the free copy of AVG or if you require more protection buy the paid-for copy", now it's "download Panda or Avast", especially as it seems almost impossible to find the Zen-free vanilla AVG anti-virus version anymore. Even the refills in my free pen have run out - it was a good pen, too... It's a sad day...

I found the solution to this new policy AVG is offering the NEVER ENDING POPUP SPAM ...  I unistalled it and went with another alternative... I been using this for many many MANY YEARS ... and this never ending bombardment of *ZEN* bull was the last straw... I could put up with the over protective nature of it causing false alerts ... but now that I am getting spammed pretty much every few hours with a POPUP that NEVER STOPS ... I uninstalled it so until AVG ditches this intrusive and very ANNOYING B$ I am done with this program now...

Just my 2c: Popups that can't be disabled are a piss poor "advertising campaign". Users shouldn't have to consider deleting folders from installation folders to stop popups.

I understand that when I get "Free" AVG there will be something for you to make money off of... it's important for you to put forth those offers... Its important for your company to get paid.

It's also important not to take it too far and annoy your prospective customers.

I didn't consider disabling the ads or replacing your product UNTIL you took it too far.

Signed,
Just another annoyed user of Free Avg.

By this time, having read through way too much of this and other threads, I fully realize that my comment will have no impact on the AVG Marketing & Development teams (who I think should all be fired). But it still feels satisfying to join the ranks and say SHAME ON AVG. I uninstalled and will try out Panda or Avast. And, yes, I left reviews on PC Mag and Cnet.

Today is also my goodbye to AVG.

As other people stated, this is not what a free version is supposed to do...

It's more of a pain dealing with AVG then with the popups it prevents.
Had a good run, take care AVG, but remember...

No popups.

Like others I have made an account just to tell you that I have uninstalled AVG for this exact reason.  I would suggest you change your model to make these product notifications optional before you lose any more people to other antiviruses but I don't really care.  Won't be returning to avg, ever, and don't bother responding to this comment because I won't be returning to this site either so don't waste your companies time or money.

I have been a long time (paid) user of AVG Internet Security 2015, and my subscription expires in 5 days. I have decided not to renew, for much the same reason as others in this thread. I don't want the Tuneup product and I don't want a monthly subscription (a new advertisement which has just popped up today). If you cannot switch off promotional pop ups for the paid version, then it really is time to look for something else. It's a pity - I have been using AVG and recommending it for many years now.
Binda WinsBinda Wins
I've been putting up with popups for a while and was ok with them till one crashed the game I was playing and then my PC in the process. This with Game Mode set to ON.

You guys at AVG have been aware of this problem for at least a year, looking at this thread. How about fixing it???
Freelance CraigFreelance Craig
Well that's me done with AVG as well. What none of us want are pop ups invading our desktops (i.e. the windows desktop) which is way more intrusive than websites that do similar things. I'll not be recommending AVG to anyone else.

AVG having been 'esculating' this issue since last year looking through the thread but it's clear nothing is going to be done about it and word-of-mouth is the best and worst publicity.

I switched to AVG 5 years ago because Trendmicro started to do this popup advertising thing. I currently have a paid subscription for 5 computers which still has a year to run, but if it doesn't stop soon I'll be removing it from all 5 computers and finding another AV program.  And I won't be back.

I created an account too just to join in and let AVG know they lost another customer, used AVG since i got my first computer at 12 and now im leaving as i think its utter bullshit that AVG thinks its doing us customers a favour by closing our games midway just for it to promote their latest business model. BYE AVG i hope you have heaps of fun! So far ive read over 50 people have left due to this post. I love snowball effects. Time to share this on reddit people!
Dave RedburnDave Redburn
I as well created an account to chime in on this issue. I've turned off the ads, and they continue to come and steal my focus. I can't accept this. I will never buy services from a company with such an annoying, intrusive, popup window ad campaign. And I don't want apologies. I want the popups to stop.
Rosalyn DodsRosalyn Dods
I understand that with a free product there will be some degree of advertising. It used to be inside the GUI which was fine. I would even be willing to put up with pop-ups from time to time IF clicking on "No, Thanks" worked. Seems like once a user has indicated a lack of interest, there should be a lack of pop-up on a particular campaign.
Jason DavidJason David
I also came here because I wanted to disable the ads, but I have to say I'm shocked and dismayed by the rudeness of "John" (OP) and other customers.

They're giving us a free product here that says a bundle of money and has been a reliable option for over a decade, people! The least you could do is to be respectful and understand of their advertertising, especially when they're helping you to disable it!

Wow!

Jason, if you read the posts here, you'll find that THESE ADS CAN'T BE DISABLED.

These ads keep popping up, even we untick the options in the app's settings.

These ads keep popping up while watching a movie full-screen with our families.

These ads keep popping up while doing a power point preseintation at a company conference.

These ads can't be disabled, and interrupt our work 10-20-50 times EACH DAY.

Hi all, I'm another PC tech but unlike some I represent a lot of low paid workers who cannot always afford yearly upgrades for their devices.
I run multiply AV programs on different computers for testing, AVG and its pop ups are also starting to annoy me.
Also note a lot of my customers who get the free version with an expensive repair job (to help keep their costs down), are told about the pros and cons of free V paid and often update to the paid version.
I can not in good conscience keep recommending AVG and other now recommend AVIRA and AD-Aware Antivirus.
Interesting to note that some of AVG extras get picked up when running adware and junkware removal programs!

Considering this post was made on August 13, 2015, and it is now June 17, 2016, and these pop up adds are STILL happening, I'm going to assume AVG does not care, because if they did this PROBLEM would have been FIXED long ago, and chalk it under negligence. I have been using AVG since the early days, and as an IT consultant also recommended and installed AVG Free on houndreds of computers over the years.

It is an absolute disgrace that AVG have sunk down to the mud by spamming it's customers.
It is not relevant that the customer have downloaded the free version of AVG. It does not at all entitle AVG to spam customer on a daily basis. The customers that have downloaded and installed the free version did it for exactly that reason. It is FREE.....

I do understand that AVG wish to get more paid customers, and if they did one or two of these popups, and on these gave the option to "not show this again", then this would be acceptable.

Not respecting customers choice, and then spamming customers daily and some times even several times each days is not going to get AVG more paid customers.

Such lack of respect for peoples privacy is actually making me seriously question if AVG is the right SW to protect my privacy at all???

Someone within AVG desperately need to take the spamming tools away from the kids in the marketing department ASAP, or they will be wiped of my recommend list at least.

......And, by the way. The same goes for the SW upgrade procedure.......
It is just as much disgrace that AVG here as well by default "fool" people using AVG free to go for a trial of the pro version, and then start spamming people after a short while stating that their license has expired.

This is my first, and last post here on the AVG forum, I actually went through the bother of registering just to post this.

Hi, I’m also don’t like this non-stop adware.
So I’ve gone over to Panda antivirus. I’ll give them a try. It’s free just like AVG,
Like many other people I’ve been using AVG for years, but no more. I’ve had enough.
Now Here in the UK we have harassment laws.  I found this info which I think AVG should be aware of.
Harassment is both a criminal offence and a civil action under the Protection from Harassment Act 1997. The offence of harassment extends to any form of persistent conduct which causes another alarm or distress. Therefore the range of behaviour that is capable of constituting an offence under the Act is potentially very wide.
So there we have it. All it will take is for someone to make a complaint to the police & they will have to act on it.
 That’s something to think about.

What is Adware?
Adware refers to the class of malware that presents unwanted advertisement using intrusive and at times dangerous methods.

I am trying out alternative anti-virus because off all these pop ups. They can steal focus from the work I do on my PC causing me to make mistakes if I do not notice right away.

Finally got fed up with the pop ups.  So I used the 'options/advanced options/system tray notifications' suggestion.

Considering that I've had to manually update AVG on a regular basis, rather than it updating when opened or according to a schedule...oh, except for the updates that require me to turn the computer off and on again, those are automatic updates...and that I've been a regular AVG user since about 2003, I'm at the point where I want it to work, like it's always worked or I'm just going elsewhere.

When I say 'I want it to work', that means in the classical sense.  Quietly, in the background, without being a resource hog.

When I first started using AVG a few years ago there was maybe one popup every month or two, now it seems I get them three or four times a week.  I have also had them crash a game I was playing and lose everything I had achieved on that level to that point, very annoying.  I chose you because Kaspersky had my computer locked down so tightly that a game sight I have used for years couldn't connect to my computer to validate the game for my usage without turning Kaspersky off.  AVG didn't do that.  Then about a year ago, approximately the same time zen showed up, AVG started blocking my game sight as well and I am back to turning it off to download games from them and be able to actually run the games.  Zen, by the way, is a royal pain in the neck!!!!  It's something I don't want and it is constantly messing things up on my computer.  I have tried removing it but within a few updates it's back again.  I am sure I am not the only user with all of these complaints and the complaints I have to just keep multipling.  None of them every go away.

These advertisements are not useful for me, they will not work on me (I will not purchase advertised products on principal) and I'd like them to be turned off. I'm not using the free version, I paid $85 for a 2 year license.

The only suggestion worth implementing, given the sheer number of requests above, is for AVG to provide an option that turns your all advertisements off, so they don't interrupt work or games. If it's not fixed by the time of my renewal, I will not renew.
Charles BoyceCharles Boyce
I had to find my own post on this site to fix the problem on my home computer...I don't know if it still works, I noticed they removed the folder that the adds were contained in...but the subsequent folders are in there somewhere...what I did was, after disableing the avg protection, I went to C:\Program Files (x86)\AVG\AVG201x\ for 64bit systems
3. Delete the following three folders: Awacs, Banners, Tuneup

the AVG201x folder was no longer there, so I just searched while in the AVG folder for Awacs; Banners; and then Tuneup.  they all appeared, and I deleted them...now to reboot and see if it still works...

I'm with everyone else been using avg since the dawn of winxp.   Now these popups started did like everyone else and tried to disable in the settings to no avail.   I'm not going to go in and delete files or folders to make this work for me.  It should work for me way before I have to edit code or anything on my own.  I have my 3pcs and 19 client pc's. 7 of those Pc's are paid 1 years that will be getting canceled when there year is up.  Guess we are moving on to a new antivirus.  Time to go to BitDefender.   I had no problems with them the last time I put it on a clients pc.  It was a good run avg sorry you had to go and fuck it up for everyone.

Like so many others on this thread I got a username simply to voice my DISGUST with AVG for these annoying popups. I am currently in the process of downloading another antivirus, after which I will uninstall AVG. Their "customer service" responses, with all due respect to the human beings who are merely carrying out AVG orders, are worse than no responses at all since they indicate a complete indifference to customer needs. So, goodbye AVG. You suck.
George BGeorge B

Well, it took less than a day.  Less than a day after disabling the system tray notifications for an advert popup to appear.

So, goodbye AVG.  It's been a long run.  I'm going to try out Avast, which PC Mag actually rates higher than AVG and Panda, which is rated 3rd overall.

AVG-  I understand that you may need to create these pop-ups to generate money. Most people download your service because it is free and you had a decent rep for internet security. If you made it as simple as closing the pop-ups/adware that you generate, many would find it tollerable for a free service, however when you disable the close button on those pop-ups and try to force users to click on your ad (or use task manager), you have crossed a line that makes you and your product appear cheap, and completely untrustworthy, no different than the crap onthe internet that you claim to protect people from.

I am sure you are already working around the solution from Charles Boyce. When you do and the unclosable popups return, your product will be uninstalled and (I am guessing I wont be the only one).

There is 2 answers you will get from AVG regarding pop ups:

1. We regret for the inconvenience caused.
The popup will be stopped as soon as possible. Your patience is much appreciated. Our main goal is to keep our customers happy. (really... then remove the pop ups since thats what every customer seems to want).

2. We have escalated this popup issue to our concern team already and we are working on this. (This particular thread started in Aug 2015. Surely the concern team have had a chance to mull it over by now).

AVG changed over the years. Like many others users I'll be moving on too. Anti-virus is meant to stop annoying issues, not be the annoying issue.

So the typical pop-ups haven't shown up again, but I did get one that looked like a gift card saying they had a special offer...I don't know which folder that would be in...I appreciate all the thanks everyone!  I didn't come up with the solution, it just took a little extra digging to find it!  A real hero would be someone who comes up with an adblock for windows.

I thought I was free at last!

Related to Charles Boyce's comments,
It has been approximately a month since removing AVG and installing Avast. Avast has been running very well. But just the other day I was very surprised to see yet another AVG ad pop up. I wondered how that was possible. Was AVG coming back from the dead? No, it turns out that at some point in the last year, an additional AVG program was installed on my PC that I didn't know about. Possibly PC Tuneup, or Zen, or something else. I don't even remember doing it. Maybe AVG did it on its own after I made a clicking error while disabling one of the pesky ads. Anyway, if you're un-installing AVG-AV, you might be wise to check for other AVG products on your system or they too will start producing ads before long.

Yes - I have had a couple of these annoying "gift" pop ups, too! What will AVG think of next to entice people to click on their pop-ups? So annoying.
So that brought me to this thread and to your original post about a year ago, and to the wilderssecurity thread. Thanks for that.
What I have done is to rename the three folders - awacs, banners and Tuneup - which are all in "C:\Program Files\AVG\Av" on my XP machine. I always rename in case I need to rename them back to their original names :) . The usual change that I make to the name is simply to add "WAS " at the beginning.

The only positive comment I would like to make to the AVG guys - apart from the fact that their software does do a good job, of course - is to say "kudos to you for leaving this thread online" as it doesn't take too much effort to find out what to do.

Of course, the pretty "gift" pop up may come back tomorrow... If it does I'll be sure to come back here again!

Ben LBen L
Like some others here, I created an account just to express my disappointment/anger at AVG.
I'd managed to get rid of the other popups by deleting the directories mentioned, but I too now see the gift-like think.  I even clicked open the 2nd time to see if that would clear whatever was tripping it, but no.  It just came up again.

So, just to add one more voice to this:

AVG, I have very simple rules for software on my system.  You may only put forth visual or audio elements while I'm actively using your software, unless I give you specific permission otherwise. Popups or ads outside the context of me actively using your application are not remotely acceptable. Whoever thought this was a good idea should be fired.  Displaying ads in this manner makes your software adware, period.

Furthermore it is clearyou have no intention of removing these popups as this thread has been around for 10 months and this is still an issue.

So, if someone manages to post a solution to this latest gift popup before it comes up again, then I suppose laziness will allow me to remain a user. If not, then I'll be joining the list of ex-AVG-users (plus, there will be social media posts).

Seriously, fix your shit.
Mike MetcalfMike Metcalf
Just adding another voice to the pile here. The pop up ads from AVG seem completely counterintuitive and disruptive for an antivirus program. I would consider paying for the full product if it were not for the way you are advertising to your userbase and if I could pay a one time fee instead of a yearly subscription.

"Thank you for reaching out to us with your concerns."
Shut up with the canned responses.  Are you even a person, or just a less-intelligent-than-normal bot?

Many of our users find these offers useful: they rely on them to upgrade to our higher levels of protection."

You don't seriously expect us to believe that there is anyone out there who appreciates unsolicited popup ads, do you?

"But we do understand the repeated appearance of the same message is frustrating and we are working to improve your experience."

No, you are clearly not.  If I believe that you believe the nonsense you're spouting, then the fix would have been simple: just add an option in the settings to turn off the ads.  I still think the presence of the ads at all is a travestry and a violation of trust, but at least with a toggle, people who find them useful (because they *totally* exist) can leave them on while those of us who don't want them can turn them off.

It's a super-trivial thing to do, especially if you have several months in which to do it.

And yet... it's not done.  So I don't even think you believe that bull you said.  You know fullwell that most people do not want the popups, but you figure that more people will give you money either for better protection or to make them go away, and if you lose users who aren't paying right now, well, no harm to you, right?

I honestly can't think of another explanation.  I can't even imagine how anyone with a mindset other than that allows this idea to go through.

Well, I for one will NEVER give you money, because you have proven that customer satisfaction is not your top priority or even close to it.

So the VERY VERY LEAST you could do is not insult our intelligence and just be honest that you have no intention of fixing the problem.

Because, again, it would have sufficed to add a toggle so that those of us who cared could turn the popups off. You'd likely still have plenty of people too lazy to do so and they'll see your ads and maybe even buy, but you wouldn't have this massive backlash at you because your product turned into adware.

I haven't seen the other popups since I deleted the three directories suggested by Charles Boyce, but I've seen the "A gift for you" popup THREE TIMES IN THE LAST TWO DAYS and that is THREE TIMES TOO MANY.

I have debated now, as I'm writing this, whether to just go and find another anti-virus, or to give you a chance to respond... since I'm writing this, it seems only fair to allow for a response, but you are on your very last chance.  If the next response either
  1. Doesn't arrive by EOD tomorrow.
  2. Doesn't include step-by-step instructions on how to disable ALL popups.
  3. Fails to pass the Turing test.
Then I'm out.

We should all feel grateful for the awesome support. I mean, most of us here get a response from AVG support, even if it is pretty much the same response for each one. And guys, come on, they're working on it. This thread started on August 13 2015, and we're now almost in July of 2016.  11 months. It's not that bad, is it?

The above paragraph was loaded with sarcasm in case anyone missed it, especially those poor agents that have to do copy/paste response and for whom English is probably not their first language.

So in short, here's what we get.

1) They're sorry, they apologise, many people have complained, they're working on it, post on the broken feedback form so that their team can fix the issue...
2) Follow the steps provided by Charles to disable popups. (I've gone a week without one so far, instead of 3-4 per day)
3) Uninstall AVG and find another fine product out there. Most of them are of at least equal quality based on reviews, and some of them don't even have a campain to force you to fork out money out of your pockets just so that you can get different popups that will ask you to dig in the wallet again.  I know that's what I'm doing.

Nessa CarsonNessa Carson
Created an account to say I am uninstalling today due to this! This has clearly been an issue you've known very well about since at least August 2015, so no. Until recently, the pop-ups weren't so bad for me. Now they are often more than once a day: that's insane. Stop shouting at me. I keep getting that 'To: you, From: AVG' present, and have absolutely no desire to click your clickbait. Luckily the above comments introduce me to good anti-virus freeware from other vendors!
Ben LBen L
<sigh>
1. Prompt response, check.
2. Include instructions on how to disable popups - FAIL.
3. Pass the Turing test - FAIL.

I suppose I didn't really expect any different.
"If you have a specific experience with AVG products that you would like to share with us, we would appreciate hearing about it."

If you had actually bothered READING my posts, you would know that the experience I'm objecting to is the same as everyone else here: unsolicited popup advertisements that come up even when I'm not directly engaged with your software.

Also, again, your main goal is clearly not keep your customers happy, because your customers have been telling you for TEN MONTHS that there needs to be a least an option to turn these ads off, and yet, there is still no such option.

So, if you are actually a person, and not a ...
I JUST HAD HE "AGIFT FOR YOU" POPUP COME UP ***AGAIN***, JUST NOW, AS I WAS TYPING HERE.
...

As I was saying.  If tere are actually any humans from AVG monitoring this thread, go back and read my previous post again.  Then re-read it... then re-read it again, and don't respond until you actually understand the problem.  Understand that you have a lot of users who are EXTREMELY UPSET that you have turned your software into adware, and that all we want(ed) was even just an OPTION to turn those ads off.

Or don't, because it's quite clear that you don't actually care.
You can say "Our main goal is to keep our customers happy." as many times as you want, but actions (and inactions) speak louder than words.

Your complete and utter failure to address this issue for months tells us what your real priorities are.  I can't speak for everyone for 100% certain, but I believe that no on on this thread - not a single person - actually believes you when you say this.

So goodbye, I'm leaving AVG.  I will post about this experience on FB.  I doubt it'll matter too much, it's not like I have a lot of influence, but if I can convince even one person who might have bought your software not to, then good.

Hello Jeff,
Thank you for reaching out to us with your concerns. Many of our users find these offers useful: they rely on them to upgrade to our higher levels of protection. By doing so, they help fund your free version of the protection. We also handpick offers from our other products or those of partners we feel can add to your security or digital experience. If you have suggestions on how these offers might be more relevant to you or less intrusive, please let us know. We are always working on improving your experience with AVG. Thank you for understanding.

Load of rubbish. Yesterday I tried the steps Charles suggested above, and this morning got another notification - your pro thingy trial has expired... The one I tried using to get rid of the stupid pop-ups, and then locked me out of AVG completely after the 30 days was up... UNINSTALLING.

Goodbye AVG.

I'm going to try Avast.
Neal BradleyNeal Bradley

The only workaround I have found is to block all the IP addresses used by AVG. I then enable one set of IP addresses in order to take any new virus pattern updates. When done, they then get blocked until next update is needed. Looking at my network traffic, I noticed a lot of cases where AVG was creating all kinds of network trafic back to the mothership. It is a pain we have to go to this extent just to use AVG software. The again, I sure do not miss the pop-ups....  :-)

I registered at this community because AVG refused to install on an old computer and I needed help.

Now, if AVG is making popups that can not be turned off (free edition), then I'm having second thoughts. Maybe I should try some other antivirus, but the problem is that several antivirus programs does not support pre-SSE2 CPUs.

Hi, I have posted one time before in this thread and that was not a request for help. I commented on the situation but it seems that my point was missed.

But no worries. I'm out of here because AVG antivirus seems to not be what I'm looking for. Goodbye and thanks.

Hello John,
We regret for the inconvenience.
As this is a free version, the pop-up cannot be stopped. However, new option of controlling the frequency of pop-up notifications is integrated with latest version of AVG free. To change the settings click on Options ->Advanced settings ->Appearance ->Set maximum frequency of in-pp offers from AVG and trusted 3rd parties.
If you still have any issue, you can always contact us back.
Thank you

Just two more cents (had to relook up this entry to remember which folders to rename, again).  I agree with the posters that choose to rename rather than delete the folders, but it doesn't seem to matter.  Every time AVG updates I believe it reinstalls the folders and they seem to have changed their location twice...I just want a free anti-virus program that doesn't hog all my system resources, and AVG seems the best at it, but when I get pulled out of a game because of a pop-up it is beyond annoying...though I shouldn't complain since its free...still...

I have used AVG as my primary, and in some cases ONLY virus protection for over a decade now.  I reciently installed windows 10 as a secondary boot on my Linux desktop and installed my old trusty friend AVG.  I have been plagued with the pop-ups since the day I installed the best virus scanner I have used to date.  I wanted to find a way to get rid of them, like most people have, and I came across this thread.  After reading that in the free version there is ZERO ability to get rid of these pop-ups I feel that there is only one last resort to get rid of this adware.

Dear AVG,
I'm sure you're familear with a dear john letter so I will get to the point.  Our relationship is over.  You no longer get the privlidge of fondling my hard drives.  The days of you by my side watching my back as I surf the web has passed.  I don't love you anymore.  It's not me, it's you.  YOU have changed for the worse and I don't like it.  Gather your things, I want you out my morning.

Figured I would Chime in too. AVG is now off my systems for good. No one likes pop ups it is a terrable practice. I understand AVG is a business here to sell a product but you need to step back and really think about how to di this with  out annoying your customer base.  Also many of us just need a virus scan nothing more annoying us with adds is never going to ring us in but can quickly move us out.

I my self am a mac user who boots to windows for games (that cant run full screen thanks!) and some apps that cannot run in Mac OS.  I can tell you these type of ads would never be allowed by apple and your app would be dropped from the appstore.

I have changed the POP-UP frequency to every third day. Well, that's better than nothing but now there is still one concern. Do the POP-UPs still halt everything you're doing? Now it popped even when I tried to bid something on eBay. I was waiting for last seconds to rise the bid BUT then Your POP-UP prevented it. And please, do not begin saying: "We apologize for the inconvenience. " It is almost as annoying as those POP-UPs.

I am being bombarded with something else: sometimes when I open my browser (Firefox), a tab automatically pops up, and even though I own a PAID TuneUp software and NO freeware from AVG, I cannot disable that.
Care to explain how the hell you also harass PAYING customers with unwanted popups??
Picture for attention is included.
And I would like to advise that while AVG was being number one for so much time - and STILL has fairly good antivirus/machine tune-up capabilities - now is going down. Why?
Simple. AVG's advertising policy now proves to be IRRESPONSIBLE, to the point of even harassing customers who PAID for an online and/or store acquired software.
I paid for my TuneUp Utilities 2014, I am happy with it, I DON'T NEED you to try forcing me to upgrade, so STOP this popup IMMEDIATELY!
You should have known better how to really serve your customers, instead of bombarding them with popups, even after they actually BOUGHT a software!...
Kazuki KashiwazakiKazuki Kashiwazaki
On my last reply, I did not included the evidence, so here is.
Again I remind you: I am a PAYING customer who acquired a LEGITIMATE TuneUp Utilities 2014 copy, and I am fully happy with this version, I simply don't need to upgrade; I own NOTHING else labeled AVG, so I request you with a solution to stop the popup tabs on my browser IMMEDIATELY.
This popping tab should never appear on my browser, as I have a paid software already, and don't need to upgrade.

Hi All,
I'm another long-time AVG user leaving for good. In due course I will remove it from all the devices in my household (Windows and Android).
I did abandon it when I upgraded to Windows 10, but recently returned having (naively) thought that they had probably given up on the intrusive and annoying adware. I don't care that I use AVG Free and have done so for many years. I DO NOT fall for advertising campaigns. If I turn down an offer, I do NOT expect to see the pop-up again. Ever.
So, in the interests of annoying advertising, would you all care to flood the forum with your alternative, reliable, NON-INTRUSIVE, and free AV choices? And keep doing it daily until AVG begs you to stop.
So long, and thanks for all the fish.

I am going to add in my thoughts about this debate.  Yes, I bought the software -- not because I was HARRASSED CONSTANTLY, but because I wanted to support AVG and was waiting for a fair sale to purchase.  However, I don't like all the DAMN POPUPS.  Annoying as anything.

Then, I just made a similar commentary on HOW MANY POPUPS YOU GET just when you are SIMPLY SCANNING A FILE.  Avg must feel that all I have time to do, is click their close buttons.  It has THREE WINDOWS after you right-click in Explorer and scan a file.

Now, isn't that a little much to tell you if file has virus????  I thought it was supposed to do the work, NOT ME.  Seems like I am on a CHAIN GANG banging rocks all day, having to keep clicking AVG's POPUPS.

Really?!?!?!?  I bought your product with a multi-year license.  Now, leave me alone.  Monitor for viruses, and quite OPTIMIZING MY COMPUTER (unless I ask) or tell me how to HIDE IT or POSTPONE IT when it popups.

My time is valuable, and I don't want to WASTE IT MONKEYING WITH AVG.  That's not how I earn money.

STFU for most of the time and help me out when I need it.  Don't make my computer an AVG ADVERTISING SYSTEM.  Okay?

Does that make sense?  Guy at the vary top and some of the others are HITTING THE NAIL ON THE HEAD.  This is too much, especially after someone buys the damn product.

Thanks, venting but BEING HONEST,
David Fullerton

Everyone,

Google for "Clam Antivirus" -  it has been the defacto standard for Linux for years and there is a version for Windows 10 x64. it's open source so stick your business campaigns you know where. Bonus is it's much faster than AVG with its multithreaded scanner.

Hee Hee.  I'm so glad I'm not the only one who is annoyed with all the pop ups and scans followed by installing some other component, only to run a scan again that tells you something like "gee...  you have x amount of errors, purchase now to fix these errors...."  (I actually came across this forum when, in fit of aggravation, typed in this search:  "When did AVG become such a big POS adware"

I though the guy who jumped and told us that we are "entitled" ... Pretty sure I'm not "entitled" when I remember using AVG "free" because it was a superior product and it wasn't full of ads and gimmicks like this.... that was the other guys, that's why we used AVG and not the other ones.

Now, I certainly understand advertising and that running a company isn't free, etc.

I returned to AVG because it was a great product (and, I'm sure, still is), I was considering paying for some "premium" features, subscriptions or whatever, but I've quickly become so fed up with all the gimmicks (that I HATED in other products, that run scans and report a large number of errors …. then try to  scare you into buying something with the idea that if you don't spend the money your computer could have "serious issues" that will "slow" it down or cause some sort of "failure").

I'm seriously considering doing away with AVG.  (I don't play games on my computer at this time, but you can bet that if AVG popped up with some B.S. from their now built-in spam-ware and disrupted something I was in the middle of (you know.... Something I actually bought my computer for...)  AVG would have been GONE off all my devices already.

I even have an actual paid version on Android and it seems that they've changed the model to subscription or something because now I'm getting messages within the app telling me that my "Pro Version" is expiring or something.  (Trying to get me to pay again, I guess!)

It's sad, those of us that have been a long time loyal users that may actually pay a little something at some point (just because we appreciated a great product) are being chased off by this silly respected AVG becoming lowly Adware thing.

Not sure this is such a great move on AVG's part, but it may be very lucrative for them and it won't be the first time that principles and quality have been sold out for the moolah!  (as P.T. Barnum is attributed to have said, a sucker is born every minute!)
Jeffrey KezerianJeffrey Kezerian
I'm late to the game, yet finally after a few years of having AVG actually places popups on our computers when the essense and mission of their product is to remove unwanted popups is simply about money and greed.  They've sold out. They don't care about poeple nor ethics.  They sucked everyone in (like so many freeware software packages) and then when you're dependent on them and they've grown a bit, they disregard all the progressive loyal people that helped them grow, and disregard you.  It's greed. It's business people caring only about money.  And the Customer Service responses of "I'm sorry for your the inconvenience AVG is causing you..." and all that BS.  Those phrases cannot be any more dismissive and patronizing.  They are a complete impersonal thing to say.  I personally, my family, and my engineering company will no longer be using AVG.  I'm so so glad I took a few minute finally after a few years of watching AVG do this and found this forum.  I'm retracting my recommendations to all the user I've shared AVG with and will commitedly say to everyone "To stay far away from AVG". Just another small business that grew and sold out.

Created an account to add my concern. I've installed AVG software (free and paid) on my mother's PC for many years to keep her safe on the web. She is now 84 years old and her PC is an invaluable "window to the world" using it for email, browsing and online purchases such as grocery deliveries.

Sadly, over the last few months, instead of being her guardian, AVG software has become a source of frustration, confusion and worry for her. The constant pop-ups, dire warnings and splash pages are now so bad she thinks she has viruses and spamware on her PC ! Despite all my efforts, I've been unable to remove a "trial version expired" spalsh page for the last 2 weeks and have no means of controlling the pop-ups.

I understand AVG need to make money through upsales and paid subscriptions, but their sale techniques are overly aggressive and appear designed to prey on the unsuspecting and vulnerable. In my elderly mother's case, it is little different to unsolicited phone calls and predatory scammers looking to extract  money for services she does not need. Looks like I need to drop AVG and find a better online guardian for her, which is a pity.

Completely fed up with these popups.  Looks like AVG's solution is just deal with it.  UNINSTALLED!  I'll go find another anti-virus, there's more out there that won't invade my pc like a virus I'm trying to protect it from.

These pop-ups are now occurring every 10 minutes.  Settings (under Advanced) are set to maximum of 3 days, which is still ridiculous.  I'll be uninstalling this adware as soon as I have enough free time to do so.

Hello John,
We apologize for the inconvenience. We are aware of this pop-up and working on a permanent fix for this issue. We suggest you to run a tool to collect the error log from your computer which will be helpful for us to know more about the cause of this pop-up. We have emailed you a link for the steps to download and run the sysinfo tool.
Thank you.

"Our main goal is to keep our customers happy.
AVG carefully monitors the quality of our products and the service we provide, therefore all feedback from our customers is important to us."

Do you monitor the number of times your freeware closes another program to spam us? Do you monitor how many times your ads get closed and how fast? Do you monitor the number of people who uninstall your products with in minutes of a popup being generated? Have you monitored how often people have had this issue and your staff have given the same bullshit answer?

I have tried many of your fixes including but not limited to: restarting pc, reinstalling freeware, updating, changing settings, etc..

I continue to get pop ups ever 10 minutes from your program. I've considered upgrading in the past, but after looking at this thread, I think I'll save my money and just switch Anti-Virus protections to a company that actually cares about its freeware clients.

Hello Justin,
We regret for the inconvenience caused. The AVG campaign popup that is discussed here recently is a bug and we are working on to fix it. We do value all of our customer's feedback and come up with a solution for it. The repeated campaign popups issues were reported by many of our customers and we implemented the option to setup the frequency for Marketing popups, please have a look at this article http://support.avg.com/SupportArticleView?urlname=How-to-Change-the-Frequency-of-Pop-Up-Notifications following link to get to know how to stop campaign popup in AVG Interface. Feel free to contact us for further assistance. Thank you.

Aw. Used AVG free for 10 years plus but now this "beefed up" pop-up won't stop whatever solution/hack I apply so I guess I'll go find something else.
Funny to read other AVG Free users so enraged at all this. "How dare you give me something for free (maybe, like me, for 10 years or more) and now make me have to look for something else free because I'm too cheap to spend money."
Also funny to read the staff saying "Our main goal is to keep our customers happy" - translation: our only concern is people who pay us, the rest of you can go .....check out this support article. Fair enough. Google the definition of "customer".
Also, it's not an advisor notification problem because it's not a notification, it's an in-app offer and can't be switched off, only the frequency changed - which, of course, doesn't work either.
Why would AVG care if free users are unhappy and considering uninstalling and going elsewhere? Makes no difference to them one way or another.
Oh dear, you recommended a free app to your customers and now it's rebounding on you?
Har har har.
This thread is comedy gold.

I've gone minutes now without AVG taking oof my computer, opening a browser program and trying to sell me something. Turned off Advisor, set ads to never. BUT there is a big button in the middle of GUI that says Fix Performance and does the same con stuff malware does (detects issues and tries to sell you something to fix).
I've paid for my license, stop hustling me, and especially if I'm seeing your fake stuff that you say is legit) on a regular basis, I get used to it and might miss some real malware.

I'm an AVG Reseller and I'm about to close my account with AVG and stop selling their products to my customers if AVG don't stop these ridiculous popup messages. I have paid version and have set popup notifications to never and I'm still getting popup ads from AVG. I'm getting calls from my clients everyday about these popups. I'm fed up with it.
AVG DEAL WITH THIS ISSUE AND STOP THESE POPUP ADS.
You are only annoying your clients with these popups.

Over a year of your militant adware campaign and still no sign of ending the ads. I have been a loyal user of AVG and have recommended it to everyone I know since at least 2003, but that changes now. I am uninstalling as I type this and only made this account to add my name to the increasingly long list of unsatisfied customers. AVG is currently no better than the adware and viruses it claims to protect you from.

Like all of the people commenting here, I've become thoroughly sick of the incessant pop-ups in recent versions of your product. So much so that I've not only stopped recommending it, I actually advise people to avoid it.

I first started using AVG on my home PC in the late 1990s and was so impressed with it that I persuaded my employer, a national IT support company and system integrator, to use it instead of our existing Computer Associates product. The company, in turn, was so impressed with it that they added it to their portfolio and became an AVG reseller.

Your oft-stated comment "Our goal is to keep our customers happy" is patently untrue because you've done absolutely nothing about stopping the unwanted, intrusive pop-ups about which you're receiving so many complaints. Avast/AVG seem to have a counter-productive marketing policy, because you persist in claiming that they are "legitimate business campaigns" despite the fact that they seem to be causing you to lose customers, including resellers, in droves.

I think that lots of your users are like me, in that if we want products, from you or anyone else, (AAAARRRRGGGGHHHH!!!!! I've just been prevented from typing because of your "Black Friday" pop-up) we're intelligent enough to look for them ourselves, as and when we want them.

I've had enough. You can now add me (and any future customers that I might have advised to use AVG) to the list of non-AVG users. I'm sure your competitors will be more than happy about the new customers you're sending to them.

Why should I be a user of a software that keeps annoying me when I can get other good free options in the market?
And it really seems that you don't care, so... I don't care either. Good-bye!

I has been satisfied user of Tune-Up utilities. Paid version, not the trial/free one.
Such software has been acquired by AVG about two years ago. Unfortunatelly, those famous utilities has been turned into adware by an automatic update. Now it starts my browser on their own behalf and open pages inside of it to show me advertising pages.
I consider aggressive and unacceptable appropach from AVG to turn a former paid software into adware. It may be acceptable in free/trial product, but not in paid version.
So sorry, despite I buyed Tune-Up licenses several times, no further business of any kind will occur with AVG.
There are other vendors offering simmilar products.
Just my money has been wasted a lot, but it's a business. It's my fault I considered AVG trusted in the past, so I got I deserved.

Registered just to get some of this action.  Went for avg myself to scan and protect my phone. Samsung s7. Immediately uninstalled as soon as the pop ups arrived, but theyre still there!! This whole thread is hilarious. The responses from avg are totally uninformative and evasive. They clearly couldn't give a pigs fart! It must be that they're revenue comes from large corporate deals where pop ups aren't even in the equation. Why would they listen to the proletariat like us humble lot. "We're getting a lot of complaints sir, about our marketing strategies" -"oh Jeremy, ignore those plebs, feed them some BS about our considering their gripes and then get back to work on the mod contract. Now f $#k off and let me enjoy my belini."

Hi all angry AVG users,

You still want to use AVG despite of all that have been said above ? Then have a look at this 2014 report about Antivirus data transmission! It's absolutely amazing, AVG is ranked amongst the worst regarding privacy protection, I bet in 2016 it's even worse. Have a look and then think twice about it !

I too registered with AVG only to add my two cents worth here.   Yes, I use their "free" version and have been happy with it's performance but having given their Tune-up app a try just recently, I am now bombarded with reminders that "Your Trial Has Expired" on a constant basis.  I have never had pop ups from any other company to the degree that AVG is now giving me!  I even went into their options menu and reset from the default "more than once a day" to the "once every three days"  and without a word of a lie, the frequency of the ads has INCREASED!  I expected much more from this company but it would appear their moral compass is in desperate need of a reset.

Their responses to comments on here are laughable and clearly evasive.  I now sit on the brink of abandoning AVG software once and for all and a few more pop ups will probably do the job for me.  Anyone suggest another company with less hassles and more ethics?

We do understand how difficult this is for you. Please be informed that the AVG pop-up you received because, the trial version, you have installed got expired in your computer. That is the reason why you received the pop-up to upgrade to pro version. In this case, we request you to uninstall your AVG PC Tuneup trial version to fix the issue. If you  get any other popups, please provide us with the screenshot http://avgclick.me/getscreenshot of it, we will check and assist you further. Thank you!

Hi Guys,

I too am completely fed up with this.  AVG clearly have no interest in resolving this issue; obviously the revenue from the advertising outweighs any concerns regarding customer satisfaction which is a real shame.  Every response starts with "We apologize if an AVG product did not meet your expectations. Our main goal is to keep our customers happy." - clearly this is utter bollocks.  I started with Norton / Symantec back in the 90's and when that became bloatware I moved over to AVG and have been a loyal customer for many, many years.

So, my question to the community is which anti-virus software do you recommend as an alernative to take us back to the good days?

Paul,
We understand your concern, we will definitely escalate your concern to the developers team. They will work on it and found the resolution. We are sorry, we are not suppose to provide any information related to third party programs. Thank you for your better understanding.

This webpage is lunancy.

I imagine Ranjani and co must wince each time this page bings. I'm equally having a terrible time with this AVG pop-up nonesense. I bought the one year version last year sometime, and it wouldn't stop harassing me for the entirety of that one-year period. Now that it has expired, the popups are in overdrive. This would not normally be much of a problem; I can always go back to Norton, and in fact, I think I may.

But looking at the utter lack of regard to the customer base, as evinced on this webpage, really gets me upset, and makes me want to go angrily to my keyboard. Why do you keep apologizing when you obviously aren't fixing the problem? Further, you keep assuring us that you guys will deliver the complains to the "concerned department," which, after much repetition, makes me believe that AVG has an actual corporate branch called "The Concerned Department." This leads me to believe that the other departments can be called the "Unconcerned Departments."

Secondly, the "Legitimate Business Campaign" excuse used earlier must have been a PR error. That phrase, and its accompanying context, is the equivalent of saying, "we don't care about your complaint; we just want money." I can guarantee you that is not the way of going about it.

Lastly, someone on your squad is extremely patronizing. Press the X button on the upper right-hand corner of the box? Seriously? Why bother even answering this page if you clearly don't want to put in either the effort or the honesty.

I sincerely hope somebody on that apathetic team of business campaigners understands that this webpage can become viral at any moment, and it won't be just a handful of users clicking No Thanks.

Best,

Nik

I'm not sure I understand how in this day and age, any company would think that spamming the sh!t out of people will convince them to happily send them money to stop the spam. Furthermore, after what I've been reading here for the past.. hmmm 16 months, I'm definitely not going to be sending any money soon, since apparently it doesn't stop the popups.  Like Paul, I used a different AV back in the days, which became bloatware and even tho it did stop the viruses, it affected productivity.  I came to AVG thinking this would be a better world, which it apparently isn't.  Like Paul (and many others) I am drifting away.  I already spoke to the MBAM people, the paid version doesn't have any popups, other than actual warnings of serious issues (ie, malware has been detected), which is what any DECENT AV should be restraining itself to. You want to REMIND people to upgrade? Spam their email, like everybody else, and save them the frustration of stopping what they're doing to "click on the small X" and lose their focus.   Seeya AVG, it was nice for a while, now you're just obnoxious with no intention of fixing this issue.

Yet another long-term AVG user - pretty much ever since it first came out - who has created a login just to let AVG know that I am deleting their product and no longer will recommend it to all my contacts.

Reading through the above and seeing the uncaring formulaic responses from AVG Mods - they've been saying "we will escalate your concern" for over a year, now, and have admitted that the pop-ups don't go away when you upgrade to the paid version due to marketing policy.  Spare us all from bag-biting marketroids!

Thanks to those who suggested Avira as a suitably reliable ad-free free alternative - you're far more use to the community than any AVG staff.

Dear AVG,
I have a paid version of AVG Internet Security but in the last year or so I have been getting periodic pop-up messages in the bottom right corner of the screen. Today's message told me that my internet activity could be seen by others, offering me a button to "hide my activity" or some such thing. At first I thought this was a reminder to turn on an option in my existing AVG installation, but in looking into it more carefully this appears to be another pop-up advertisement for a different AVG product. It's not the first such pop-up like this. If I was using the free version of AVG then pop-ups like this would be expected, but in the PAID version THESE ADVERTISEMENTS ARE NOT ACCEPTABLE. One of the reasons I pay you is so that I can be free of this kind of annoying advertising. I like AVG Internet Security in general, and in paying you for it I expect you to respect me in turn - these advertisements in a paid version are, to the contrary, quite disrespectful of me as a paying customer. At present I have a 3-computer licence, but if the adverisememnts persist for too much longer then I will seriously consider not renewing my subscription when it comes due, and instead weigh up moving to anther company's internet security product. If the advertisements are intended to entice me to buy another product then someone at AVG has seriously miscalculated; for PAYING customers the advertisements are an incentive to dump AVG rather than buy more product from AVG. Basically it's AVG's call; keep PAYING customers happy and they'll stay with the product, or annoy and irritate those customers and they'll leave AVG along with their money.

Guys,

I've deleted AVG 6 months ago, and installed 360 Total Security. It's FREE, and in 6 months, NO POPUPs at all. Zero popups.

I'm not affiliated with 360 Total Security, I've just googled for AV alternatives, and found it. My last 6 months have been spam and popup free. :)

Dan MasonDan Mason
If you all have noticed, The response that AVG gives to all the people is really Automated with the same answer which does not answer any solutions to the problem that everyone is having with the POPUPS.

AVG should be aware that a with their intent of these popups can be considered malware/spam-ware and could cause a class action lawsuit against the company and a hefty fine.

Now if I were the CEO of AVG, I would really think about this and remove the ads, popups that AVG is advertising from their FREE and PAID Antivirus to avoid a class action lawsuit.

I came here to find a solution, only to read that the best thing to do is change to another provider. I created an account just to say the following. I have been a fan of AVG for over 15 years, and have recommended it to many during my years in IT Support. So it's a pity the relationship must end, but the infuriating pop-ups are totally unacceptable.

Bye bye AVG.

Thanks for the heads up for 360 Total Security.  I've been an AVG user for well over a decade and am so done with all the pop-ups.  It's a total shame that this company is shooting itself in the foot (arms, head, torso, etc.) over something as foolish as not allowing their users to turn off the pop-ups.

This is the beauty of a free-enterprise system.  There's always competition just waiting around the next corner!

Thanks for the memories, AVG!

Yet another ex. customer here - I was a subscription AVG user for donkey's years and advised numerous friends and aquaintances to install AVG. I got so sick of the pop-ups on the paid for software so I unsubscribed and peace at last... I just cannot understand this suicidal business model of AVG's - how to alienate your customers and run a business into the ground. Now I tell people to avoid AVG... It was great while it lasted, but there are better, more ethical alternatives.

I will quite using AVG too, because of these stupid commercial popups. I have the scedule on NEVER, but of cause AVG doesn't look at that and popups every now and then with some annoying 'hint' to buy yet another program from them. Damn, I bought this program, stop bugging me!

I've had the very same problems. At one time, AVG was a great piece of software. It detected malware and viruses, easily removed them, was on par with McAffee, and wasn't an annoying piece of adware that constantly implored you to upgrade. But I found an excellent solution to this problem.

I installed Avira and got rid of AVG.

Hi,

Just to add fuel to the fire, I thought I'd let you know that I too used to advise friends and family on the great AVG but since the popups started I couldn't face the adware / spam approach and uninstalled.  This was quite some time ago but I stumbled across this thread and it seemed only right to add my voice to the many so the message is clear.

Saying that, thank you for the many years you provided this software *really* for free as I'm sure you saved me from a digital fate worse than death more than once.

I'm very unlikely to consider purchasing what many others are providing for free so you might want to ignore the next bit but if you are still with me, can I suggest you allow users who actually pay for your software the ability to opt out of marketing placement advertising.  That part of the whole issue seemed the worst of all!

So long and thanks for all the popups x
E. DarbyE. Darby
Yup.  I've recently been using the free AVG version but over the years I've bought licenses for both work and home.  Then the pop ups started fairly recently.  As mentiojed above, I couldn't (notice the past tense) turn them off and they would pop up and log me off of online games.  Very annoying.

So this afternoon I was thinking about switching to another free AV program.  I was Googling alternatives, though I've used and rejected many of them in the past, when an idea hit me.  Malwarebytes 3.0 Premium (No, this isn't a plug for MBAM).  I logged into Malwarebytes, checked my account and there was the solution.  I'd forgotten that I have not one, but two lifetime licenses.  Good-bye AVG.

And it really is too bad because over the years I really have liked AVG.  And I don't mind a company that advertises.  But this in my face barage of pop ups was just too much.

But that really wasn't the last straw.  The last straw was the sacarin "We understand your concern", "We do understand how difficult this is for you", "I profusely apologize for the inconvenience caused" canned non-responses by the AVG Help Desk personnel.  I believe that it's safe to assume that English is not their their primary language and they have no idea just how insulting those chosen words are.  Though the phrases may be proper in another culture's language, that dog transliterated into English does not hunt.  Or maybe they do understand and, like the spam, do it to be "politely" annoying.

I agree with all that say AVG is best unistalled and alternative producy installed. I too have removed it as I get ads all the time for various AVG products. Not once but over and over. AVG's pop ups are like the lunatics taking over the asylum. Let us stop that for you by us doing it (spamming)  for you instead. We are the one stop shop for spam. No need to get you spam from various sources as we can supply a 24 hour spam. Even the email I signed up for this site with is being deleted after this post to stop them spamming that. AVG has no insight at all and the reply that they are sorry that their product did not meet expectation demonstrates this. Users are telling you to stop and are leaving as they dont wont it and you are telling them well that is our product - but we dont want it. Any compnay that sees it users tell them we are leaving over and over due to the same issue but carrys on with that issue is living on borrowed time. Instead of playing pirates and letting the parrot do the talking, we are sorry that it did not met your expection! we are sorry it did not met your expectation! try getting a human to read the posts! Once a customer is gone they are unlikely to have any intrest in returning. I have found better (Avira) and I aint going to return to AVG as to me it was a waste of space. A con to nag me to get a paid version; ramsonware in all but name - pay us or else we will use your computer to effect your life until you do pay us! Try making it clear in the main ad of your product that once installed they will be spammed every day over and over for numerous paid products if they proceed and see how many people would touch it! The fact that you put it in the small print confirms you are aware not many would touch it! Bye, bye AVG - your past is better than your future!

I have used AVG for as long as I can remember. I uninstalled paid for versions of Norton to install free AVG on work PC's as it was superior as far back as 2000. I have installed the free version on countless PC's of friends and family and at our small company when we were a start up and every penny counted..

Now the company is doing well and I just paid for an unlimited version and now I am being plagued with pop ups that I never had with the free version.

I have a perfectly adequate firewall solution covering the network; I don't need an AVG firewall on every PC thanks very much, so why do I get constant red "warning" screens?

You couldn't make it up. Now I have to uninstall it and find something else.

Great, thanks AVG.

Two years later and they still haven't fixed the problem.  I, too, keep getting constant popup advertisements from AVG trying to sell me their products.  I installed AVG because I thought it came free with my Hotwire Communications (ISP) package.  But the aggravation certainly doesn't do them any favors, brand-wise.

Since it seems a good place to complain about AVG, let me tell my workmate's story :-) He installed AVG on his computer. The advertisements were (of course) very often and annoying. So he uninstalled AVG. But unfortunately Windows Defender didn't reactivate itself automatically and he couldn't activate it also. He had much work to do, so he installed AVG again and decided to find a better antivirus later. But after this (second) installation of AVG, his computer slowed down significantly and his network card seemed to malfunction. De facto he couldn't work any longer on this computer. AVG started to show messages that the computer is very slow but it can be boosted up with AVG tools! You just need to buy them! During the weekend, my colleague uninstalled AVG and his computer started running as fast as before. He finally managed to enable Windows Defender.

This way AVG has put itself into a category of ransomware, I think.
KarthikeyanKarthikeyan (Foundever)
Hello Adam,

I am sorry to hear that. This issue could have caused if the old traces of AVG was not removed properly and that must have slowed down the computer performance. If he used AVG remover to uninstall AVG, then all the old traces must have got removed and the reinstall should not have slowed down the computer performance. You can use this AVG clear tool https://share.avg.com/steam/PSP/AVG2017/AVG_Clear.exe
(Note: When you are prompted to restart in safe mode, please click on "NO" and continue to uninstall AVG in normal mode) to uninstall latest version of AVG from your computer and this should remove all the traces completely from your computer.

Thank you

I have the latest Ultimate on a number of our devices.
I'm seriously displeased over the amount of unsolicited advertising popups.
This isn't just a notification of another service I might like, but an invitation to buy services that should already be included with what I have.
eg. Password protection should be part of the privacy/firewall offered in Ultimate.

AVG are basically spammers, and they know it.

You can NOT switch off these popup adverts, I repeat can NOT switch off.

If AVG tell you otherwise, they are liars, the "zero" second popup feature in 2017 paid software is bypassed and AVG intentionally do this.

Having used AVG for 10 years, this is the last year and on renewal will look elsewhere for a company that doesn't spam it's paying customers.

AVG - WHEN will the new version be available that allows your shrinking customer base to turn off pop-up Ads?
WHAT - is the version number of this supossed release
WHO - is the product manager responsible for this mess?

I've been a paid user of AVG for years as many on this forum are (or were).  This is completely unacceptable.  Your business will continue to dissolve if this isn't fixed.

Hello John,

I understand your concern. We have new feature added to stop the campaign pop-ups in the latest version of AVG. Please check if you have updated to the AVG version 17.7. If it is, please follow the below steps to stop AVG pop-ups.

Open AVG Internet Security->Menu->Settings->General->Pop-up->Uncheck "Show campaign pop-ups for other AVG products".

This will stop all AVG campaign pop-ups. If you face any difficulties, feel free to contact us.

I am responding to the 'solutions' offered to the DRep problem by Rajarajan Sooiyachanth (AVG Technologies) on August 2, 2016. I spent a considerable amount of time carefully going through all that was asserted to correct the problem, but none had any effect. I still am not beling allowed to download my own programs from my own server! They are not infected and AVG will not honour "exeptions". This is a most serious issue and has to be resolved. Will someone from AVG please provide a way to deal with this effectively?

I also have a paid version of the software. Through this thread I learned how to turn off the ad popups (the most recent one resulted from clicking on a previous one which tried to sell me software *I already had installed on this workstation*.) BUT I SHOULDN'T HAVE HAD TO. This is really really poor user experience. I understand that the 'price' of free software is to have the developer try and upsell you occasionally, but once you buy, all advertizing, particularly intrusive ones you can't extinguish immediately, should stop. This is a triumph of some idiot in marketing over more sensible heads I think. You need to fix this.

SK,
I understand this must be annoying.
The frequency of Pop-Ups can be controlled directly from the application or can even be Turned Off. Please open AVG Internet Security, click on Menu>Settings. In Settings Window, expand "Pop-Ups" and uncheck "Show pop-up offers for other AVG products". Ok so, I've, like many others here used AVG for many years, but a while ago I decided that it had gone too far, I uninstalled it and downloaded Avast, so far it works much better.
BUT my biggest problem was uninstalling "AVG pc tuneup 2015". When I chose "uninstall" a "confirmation" window appeard saying the usual "are you sure you want to uninstal"(except it was whining about how I'm making a big mistake), and when I clicked yes... it didn't work... literally I couldn't press "yes". I could press "no", in which case it closed the window, but the "yes" button didn't work at all, which is just shitty. SO I googled until I realized that turning off the internet worked.

So I did, and FINALLY the "yes" button could acutally be pressed. But when the uninstallation process started, it connected to my wifi by force, and I thought it was to take me to a feedback page or someshit but NO, it just started it for no apparent reason. Kinda creepy don't you think? So I turned it off again and F I N A L L Y that useless program was uninstalled! Now hopefully there's no spyware lingering. So, to clarify for everyone:
1. Go to Control panel>Uninstal a program
2. Find the program you're looking for
3. Turn off your internet/router/disconnect(just get offline completely)
4. right klick on the program and chose "uninstall"
5. click "yes"
6. Turn your internet again if it connected like the creepy piece of shit it is.
7. Feel the freedom, because the exorcism has finally been completed, you're free now.

AVG has become malware, I don't recomend it to anyone, ever, boycot this shit.
Oh! And you don't have to respond with your useless "We're sorry to informe you blah blah blah" shtick because I won't be coming here again.

Sincerely, Go Fuck Yourselves <3

Srsly? This is 2018 and im still losing world of tank games by stupid pop ups. Hurry up, avast installer....
I know you need to put ads up, but this often and in such annying fashion (sorry, AVG pop up just appered) is just bad. You dont need that many ads, like you dont need ten of the same ad on a website. You are just as likely to click on an ad if there was one of them or 10 of the same ad. Its also anoying how you do the ads. Pop ups are just bad and infuriating, for any thing you might do on a computer. Its also ironic, since thats what AVG does- Remove Pop-ups. I get twice as many pop ups with avg... lol. My question is, why cant you do ads diffently, in a way tha dosent defeat the point of using your product and still lets you advertise? If i see ads whenever i open AVG, I, and a lot of people, would be fine with that

John,
Thank you for reaching out to us with your concerns. Many of our users find these offers useful: they rely on them to upgrade to our higher levels of protection. By doing so, they help fund your free version of the protection.
We also handpick offers from our other products or those of partners we feel can add to your security or digital experience.
Please provide your valuable feedback on our product feedback page here: http://avgclick.me/AVGfeedback .

@Avinash: Are you really convinced that many customers find the offers useful? Didn't you mean that many customers by accident clicked the offers and installed those programs?
I recommended and installed AVG PAID VERSION on many computers a few years ago. And even now I am getting requests why they get a popup that their computer seems to be slow, or that they are not fully protected and had to install another AVG product etc.
Mostly they do this because they think the programs are addons or even worse, they click on every banner they see.

So, no customers that rely on them, but customers that should be protected by NOT giving them banners.

Therefor, when I am in their neighbourhood, I uninstall AVG, remove their subscription and install a competitor which has their customers in view in stead of their wallet.

AVG will never ever change this, because they are selling years subscription and since there are millions of potential customers they won't have to be friendly for their current customers.

It would be great when sites that sum up the best anti virus also include customer satisfaction. That way AVG would drop significantly and they might be forced to take actions accordingly.

Hello Bhuvaneswari, if this works, then please make this the default!
AvinashAvinash (Avast)
Arco,

You should not receive ads for other AVG products after applying the above mentioned settings. We'd like to take this as your valuable feedback about making this settings default and pass it up to concern team.

I have used AVG for a few years and consistently get repeated advertisements for additional products. I am sick and tired of this behavior and not being able to turn them off. The latest is that I am seeing advertisements for AVG Chrome extensions when I open my Chrome browser. I have ZERO AVG extensions installed and somehow they are monitoring my web activity to still advertise to me. I will be choosing another anti-virus product after my subscription runs out because of this.

None of the answers seem to help and it is now May 2020!

I started getting copious amounts of pop-ups (in fact i get more pop-ups and spam from AVG and AVASt than any adware i've ever had in the old days.

So, also, when i do get these numerousd and irritating pop-ups that are blank white windows, and go to task tray thing (Win10) and click AVG incase it actually has anything useful to say (FOR A CHANGE) it won't even load up and show me. even though there has been a little exclaimation mark on there for days)

And if i go to Start and click AVG from there? NOTHING! ABSOLUTELY NOTHING!

It's been going on for weeks.

I am on the free version. And definately have found nothing to convince me i need premium version (same with Avast now too.. they spam even MORE than AVG do.. whiuch is saying something)

Been following this thred for 5 years and its still going on and still not acceptable AVG!  I'm one step away from moving to another provider if you don't scale back all the spam advertising.  Yes, I've turned off all notifications in settings and yes I've set up silent mode, yet STILL getting unwanted notifications.  The nice little red alam in my settings telling me that, oh no my internet activity is not private and I need to buy more protection from AVG - unacceptable!  The constant early renewal popups daily 3 months in advance of my renewal date on every single one of my 5 PC's - unacceptiable.  GET IT THROUGH YOUR GREEDY CORPORATE HEADS THAT WE DON"T WANT YOUR ADVERTISING... and it's now bordering on phishing.  CHANGE IT NOW!
