I keep getting messages like this popping up from AVG, even though I have system tray notifications turned OFF. I'm getting really sick of seeing these blatant advertisements from AVG, and if there isn't a way to make these messages stop, I will consider AVG to be adware and uninstall it. AVG should work in the background without me having to think about it, these messages are UNACCEPTABLE.

Disable notification
Open AVG > Options > Advance settings > Appearance > uncheck AVG Advisor notification ( if this doesn't work the please uncheck AVG Notification )

If these messages can't be turned off, then AVG is adware as far as I'm concerned, and will be uninstalled.
If this is a bug then it needs to be fixed in the next update. These ads from AVG are unacceptable.

Without an option to turn ADS OFF, then AVG is practically ADWARE. You need to realize that forcing unwanted ads on your users is UNACCEPTABLE.
YOU NEED TO INTRODUCE AN OPTION TO TURN AVG ADVERTISEMENTS OFF.
AVG as a company need to realise that this business model is a terrible idea. People install antivirus software so they are not harassed by unwanted messages, popups and annoyances. By doing this your defeating the point of your own software.
You provide a free product, advertising within the GUI; that is acceptable. But putting messages up on the screen without user prompting for it makes this software no better then any of the other junk out there. AVG got sucessful because it's software was simple, sucessful and left the user alone. If you don't change your business model you will find over the coming months a huge abandon rate on your software now that it no longer has any advantages over other software.
I use AVG -- and as a computer technician I sell it to business clients. It's because of this devotion that I took the time to write this, I would like to keep using AVG into the future, but the path it is heading is not one that I can follow for much longer.
I've used avg on my 5 computers for years, but I just switched to Panda.
See ya AVG, don't let the door hit your butt on the way out.

Also, for the record, my understanding is that even if you do pay for one of AVG's products, you STILL get bombarded with pop-up ads that you can't disable! Which makes the decision to uninstall it all the easier.

1. Disable AVG self protection:
Right click the AVG icon in the taskbar (near the clock)
Select to Temporarily Disable AVG Protection
Agree the default timeout - usually 10 minutes?
2. Open My Computer or Windows Explorer and Navigate to:
C:\Program Files\AVG\AVG201x\ ...... for 32bit systems (201x means 2013 or 2014)
C:\Program Files (x86)\AVG\AVG201x\ for 64bit systems
3. Delete the following three folders: Awacs, Banners, Tuneup
Do not delete anything else you see inside the AVG201x folder.
If you accidentally delete anything else go to the recycle bin and restore it.
Note: If you have already paid for the Tuneup addon then keep this folder
4. Close the My Computer/Explorer window
5. Enable AVG self protection:
Right click the AVG icon in the taskbar (near the clock)
Select to Enable AVG Protection - takes 20 seconds or so to fully activate.

I created an account just to thank you for the suggestion. I hope this works. This AVG bloatware was something that I used AND recommended. With their militant campaign of popups and notifications, I will not recommend AVG to anyone at present. What a pity that the product that I chose to use to block popups is now the source of my problems. As one user stated, it can knock you out of a game due to the popups. Not a problem for me as I don't game, but my son gets very irritated from it.
I will try to update this thread once I have monitored the results and have something to share.
In the meantime, I am looking for an alternate (free) antivirus to quell my rage. Probably will be Avast or Avira at this point.

Why are you lying Rajendra? It absolutely can be turned off, in a way. Please link us downloads for previous versions of AVG where this function was not installed. It came through an update, or am I incorrect in my assumption? Are you saying that the "business campaign" is maintaining a real-time connection with my computer to have these advertisements pop up periodically?

My installation is a bit different form what you describe (I don't know why), but I don't have the three mentioned folders in my C:\Program Files\AVG\AVG2012" folder. I did, however, have them in my C:\Program Files\AVG\AV folder, so that is where I deleted them from.
I would also like to comment on the typical brainless answers from the staff in this thread, who need to have things told 10 times before they begin to understand what the problem is about. It is a shame that companies these days hire such incompetent people, who are supposed to be a help in supporting their customers, but are in fact no help at all.
Now comes the big issue as it takes forever to remove avg from a single pc. THANKS AVG... Please note that thanks is sarcastic in nature. The removal of your product is so slow as to take up to an hour on each machine. I am currently removing it from mutiple units at the same time to try and speed up the process. It has also been suggested that I just reload the systems from scratch as this will only take 30 to 35 minutes per unit and we can be up and running again with all our neccessary additions to the systems in place and no problems from your program.
Now just think avg if you did not have these spamming/adware issues we would not now be removing your product from our systems. I will be very happy when avg is gone from our systems so I will be able to finish my daily workload without any annoying distractions from a spamming/adware program. GOOD BYE avg. It was sort of good while it lasted. LOL. I guess the only bright side to this is I have job security for a while.

Some of the responses from AVG reps are bordering ion the ridiculous; they know as well as anyone that the incidence of these pop-ups are recent to AVG Protection, and whilst there were pop-ups in the past they were far less frequent / intrusive.

This is getting annoying. I am getting sick of these AVG ads popping up you are losing fans and quick becaus of these annoying AVG ads.
I have been a fan of AVG since 2008 this lates update has been realy annoying to me.

The entire point of having a Anti-Virus program is to eliminate such annoyances these AVG ads or AVG pop-ups like defeat the point in having the program installed.

If your main goal is to keep customers happy then your not doing a vary good job of it.

I have used AVG for 10 years on all my computers and been fairly happy with it over the years. However, the combination of these pop ups, which will not stop, and the inane imbecile way that AVG has dealt with the complaints on this forum, have resulted in me removing AVG software from all my computers.
It was pretty good while it lasted. It's over now.

I tried twice to provide you with feedback on your online form, and it says that my submission failed even though I answered all the stupid questions.
So I just wanted to say that I have now removed AVG from all my computers, and I will never be using it again. Thanks for AVG being great for a long time.

Lets put aside the fact that this impacts my business relationships with my clients and my own reputation and reliability, after reading all the posts in this thread it is apparent that management has isolated themselves from the people who are paying their salaries (Us!) by using the equivalent of call centre reps to dish out all the "We are sorry, please post your comments on the suggestion page" messages.
Stop saying you are sorry it is patronizing when clearly after many months AVG has demonstrated the company has no intentions of reversing their decision to spam all of its clients. I myself have paid for your products over the years and apparently having the paid version of AVG does not have any effect on unwanted AVG desktop pop ups, they appear in both the free and paid versions.
You have convinced me to 1. Stop using AVG products but more importantly 2. I will no longer install AVG on clients machines or recommend any of your products, in fact just the opposite, we will go back to the drawing board and test all of the other antivirus/anti malware products and advise all of our clientèle to remove all AVG products from all of their machines.
Do not reply to this with how sorry you are from the callback handbook you were issued, do not ask for a screenshot of which pop or which AVG program we are using (like it is a surprise to AVG and they do not know what we could all be possibly talking about) it is insulting. They say even bad publicity is still publicity... well there you go mission accomplished.

If you take time to complete this form, and fill out EVERY field correctly, it FAILS.
The field which causes the error?:
"Are you aware that AVG has a full, paid version of security software? Yes/No"
Are you kidding me? that is the REASON I am providing feedback! Because you keep ramming it down my throat every day no matter how many times I tell you I am not interested!
If you select Yes in that field, it fails. Select No, it fails. Leave blank? It fails.
Result: AVG fails.
If they cannot even manage to get a simple web form to work, how do I trust them to provide reliable antivirus?
I also noted that this thread appers to be hidden if you search within their site. You can get to it from a google search no problem but maybe they dont want you to find this on their forum?

At this point, I can see that your untrustworthy company has at least 4 different links that you give as feedback URLs, and they tend to end up at either http://www.avg.com/eu-en/product-feedback or http://www.avg.com/us-en/product-feedback
If a user uses either page and selects "AVG Antivirus Free" as the answer to "Which AVG product are you currently using?", the following 2 questions are added to the list.
"Are you aware that AVG has a full, paid version of security software?"
"Do you have any plans to upgrade to the full, paid version of AVG?"
It is not worth my time to try to validate which links result in my information being accepted/discarded as intended.
The post above may be the first time you read a complaint regarding the feedback system not working, but I can assure you that it has been reported before. (If you DARE to say that the way to report the broken feedback system is with the (broken) feedback page, I can not tell you what will happen; but I can assure you that it will not result in me putting well written feedback into a dead-end system for the amusement of support morons and people who ignore security, ethics, and proper marketing issues.)

Since your feedback pages are (multiple) black-box forms with no way to verify that anyone has received or is taking action based on the information, and since your helpdesk staff has not returned my call relating to the malicious behaviors and advertising methods, I shall have to assume that we can not trust concealed methods at AVG. Telling people to submit their feedback to a private area (or broken system) where concerns can be ignored is nearly equivalent to having people submit their issues to a trash can/waste bin/dumpster/skip/AVG ethics office.

This is why AVG software can be considered malware as detailed in the other thread.
It should not take multiple complaints (especially through a broken, "black-box" closed system) and an investigation period for you (the company) to determine that what you are doing is wrong/hazardous, contrary to the objectives of proper security software, interpretable as malicious (actions of malware), and actually giving other malicious software something to copy to appear "legitimate". Certain things should obvious as bad ideas from the moment they are proposed.
To those who represent AVG Technologies, please do not respond like chat/forum bots or submit any claim that will be deductively reasoned as false ("Our main goal is to keep our customers happy.") It is clear the normal operators are unable to provide useful information, excuses, or defenses (as none exist for this behavior). Escalate this issue as appropriate, and get a proper authority to respond.
It has been clearly shown above that:
a) they do not read the previous comments (first time anyone has mentioned broken
b) they do not even know their own systems (there is no question "do you know there is a paid for version?" REALLY?)
It all points to 1 thing, the product is not my problem, their policy and "support" is.
Their aim is 1 thing, push you away from the free version against your will. Sorry but all you do is push me to competitors.

If I was suspicious I would suggest it had been designed so that you could not complain about the free version, you can only give feedback if you have paid for it.

I used AVG since the day it came out and can understand about the adverising side of it but this is ridiculous?

since the introduction of these popups, i cannot recomend this program to anyone any more. i my self, are looking for other programs with less bloat ware.
Sorry, but who ever thought up this idea, is not only losing you personal users, its losing you business users too... cannot have this kind of popup show during a business meeting.
unless theres a way to disable these popups. you have lost more customers than it will ever gain, due to most people classing this as adware...

We already received many feedback regarding this campaign popups.
As this is the only way of marketing our products we couldn't stop this, however we got a multiple feedback regarding this so there is a chance of making some changes for this campaign popups.
I have been using AVG for years and like many of the folks on this thread, have a significant number of clients. I’m a reasonable man; I will continue to click “No Thanks” every day for two more weeks. The developers can fix this in an hour and put it in an update. If it’s not resolved by then I will move on. It’s quite simple really, and I suspect if they (the actual development team, not the support group) don’t address this post haste it will have a significant enough business impact that it may not be possible for AVG to recover, it is that serious.
I am today uninstalling all AVG software from all 16 computers.
I'm not sure how many times I hear from AVG that this is "legitimate Business campaign popups", but let me tell you this: This is my legitimate consumer choice decision: you have lost 16 users today.
I am a patient man but I have my limits. I will give them one week to resolve this. That should be plenty of time as it's an easy fix by another update - otherwise, Panda here I come. (Yes, I am not holding my breath).

Regarding the following solutions from two threads, can any one UNEQIVOCALLY state that they work absolutely positively for sure; i.e. over a period of say a several days, restarts, etc.... there appears to be some doubt based on other posts, at least for the latest updated version. Note that the www.wilderssecurity.com/threads/avg-2013-2014-disable-the-advertising-tiles-and-panel.357139/ noted as the source of Charles Boyce's posted solution clearly shows 2013-2014, but not 2015-2016...
Also, if one follows this advice to delete the suggested folders / files, wouldn't it also be possible to MOVE and / or RENAME file or ext. vs deleting, and if it doesn't work restore them to their original location / name, OR is that going to too much trouble vs just deleting which presumably allows complete restoration of all deletions to their original status with a few clicks putting everything back as if nothing had happened...

There's another way to stop these pop-up ads which doesn't involve uninstalling or downloading anything:
1. Turn off router (maybe I'm being paranoid here!)
2. Disable AVG self protection: Right click the AVG icon in the taskbar (near the clock).
Select to Temporarily Disable AVG Protection.
Agree the default timeout - 10 minutes should be plenty.
3. Open My Computer or Windows Explorer and Navigate to:

And why would you @Steve Lname & @Paul Harris threaten them with “your going to give them 2/1 weeks or your going to leave” your nothing to these guys and you can't hold them to ransom and losing the few that they have is just a drop in the ocean so quit threatening and just do it. Uninstall AVG and get another antivirus full stop!

Having deleted Awacs, Banners, Tuneup folders on 16Feb, I now find that AVG have invented a new pop-up saying my" AVG is incomplete".

Meaning they are not going to stop the adware campaign but maybe make it not pop up as much?
As I have said above alone with many others, I have been with AVG from day one and didn't want to leave but force met no choice. When you get bullied you have to fight back!

Ransom is not my intent, that is your word, I’m showing a little “patience” (look it up) and giving them the same professional courtesy I would expect someone to give me, instead of going in kicking, screaming, and ranting as my default position, like you. There’s a difference between a crisis and an inconvenience in life and it doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure out which one this is. If the development team hasn’t responded to the public outcry and the popups are still there in two weeks I will take the 5 minutes and switch aps, it’s really not that difficult.
My advice to you, since you’ve already switched, would be to just move on from this post and get on with your life instead of chastising everyone posts because they don’t comply to your requirement of instant action. I suggest you just take a pill and lay down for a while and try to put things in perspective. Life is way too short to get so riled up over issues like this. If you’re a millennial, I understand that you won’t be able to do that, but it would be worth a try.

I am on my PC all day every day and I get spammed with these popups. Roughly one every 2 hours or so and the recent one that insists I need better security is annoying as the AVG Firewall it installs is rubbish. I get that notification at varying times. Sometimes twice an hour, sometimes once a day. Hitting 'No-f*cking-Thank-you' does nothing.
I had already installed the new Firewall but didn't like it as it blocked my access using WinAmp Desktop and the WinAmp Android App WiFiSync and the Firewall refused to pop up a request in adaptive mode. So I uninstalled the security addon it installed and it removed EVERY AVG product I had. I then re-installed and I keep getting these damn popups. At this rate, I am going to be forced into getting another Anti-Virus.
It sucks really as I have done nothing but recommend to hundreds if not thousands of people over the years that AVG was the best Anti-Virus out there. That will be changing now for sure.
@AVG, you REALLY need to fix this. I do not mind the adverts being on the application homescreen itself like the old versions, but these popups HAVE to go! I will give you a month to roll out an update/fix to this or I will be gone. Don't force me to buy that horrible virus-ridden app called Norton now...
1. I did a clean insatll of win 7/64 today, loaded drivers and within 30 minutes of installing AVG adware, before even the initial scan was done, up came a pop-up asking if I wanted to tune the PC - thats plain ridiculous.
2. I have now removed the 3 folders suggested, but now I get a pop-up "Your AVG is incomplete", blah blah...AVG is really taking the ****.
Some of you may recall 2-3 years ago AVG became so heavy that it would delay boot time by 30-60 seconds - many folks did move from AVG, they voted with their feet. AVG knows when you uninstall, so thats the only way they will really take notice and reconsider this silly practice.
Not only does it annoy gamers,it also pops up during iplayer, watching movies etc....If it gets silly I will start uninstalling, my own as well as clients PCs, (note that many of the latter do go on to the paid versions), so there would be a net drop in revenue to AVG.

Yes but you are sending the same adware many times over - if you must then one a year, better still by email (then we can automatically send to our junk folders. I have other products and I get offers by email this is by far the less intrusive way of doing this.

By the way this:
1. Disable AVG self protection:
Right click the AVG icon in the taskbar (near the clock)
Select to Temporarily Disable AVG Protection
Agree the default timeout - usually 10 minutes?
2. Open My Computer or Windows Explorer and Navigate to:
C:\Program Files\AVG\AVG201x\ ...... for 32bit systems (201x means 2013 or 2014)
C:\Program Files (x86)\AVG\AVG201x\ for 64bit systems
3. Delete the following three folders: Awacs, Banners, Tuneup
Do not delete anything else you see inside the AVG201x folder.
If you accidentally delete anything else go to the recycle bin and restore it.
Note: If you have already paid for the Tuneup addon then keep this folder
4. Close the My Computer/Explorer window
5. Enable AVG self protection:
Right click the AVG icon in the taskbar (near the clock)
Select to Enable AVG Protection - takes 20 seconds or so to fully activate.
Does not disable the popup for me.
And no I will not waste my time with a "feedback" form.

It essentially involves blocking avgui.exe from accessing the internet via the Windows Firewall. This prevents it from calling home to grab the ads to popup on your screen and annoy you into buying AVG.
On my Windows 7 machines, this fix is working well. I see no popup ads from AVG Free whatsoever.

Everytime AVG performs an update, these pop-ups come back. I was able to eliminate these by deleting the folders mentioned above, and had to do so after every update. The fact that this work-around, and the firewall blocking required to eliminate the unwanted advertisments is ridiculous.
I created an account here strictly to express my extreme anger at this forced advertisment. AVG being uninstalled as I type this, and will no longer be recommended by me.

As you are all aware, previously, when you clicked "No thanks" on the annoying pop up it disappears but comes back the very next day. This made no sense as you have clearly told them you are not interested in buying their "Protection Pro" yet it continues to offer it - this was very annoying.
AVG have finally taken bold action to clear this up. Now, instead of offering a "No thanks" button, they present us with a button saying "Remind me later", meaning they are free to remind us whenever they damn well please.

I, like most of you, am fed up with their attempts to up sell through these never ending pop ups, however, I am further annoyed at their use of fear mongering language.
The bold sentence "Your online security is incomplete" is clearly carefully designed to install fear in the minds of the more technologically vulnerable and is in itself underhanded. I know many people who would be very alarmed by this message and assume their PC is unsecured.
AVG have had many, many months to sort this unacceptable issue. Apparently the outcome of their careful deliberations is to slightly change the wording of the pop up to be more consistent with their ongoing aggressive marketing campaign.
AVG, after over 10 years with you, I have today begun looking for a more ethical and non-intrusive anti virus solution.
AVG, you guys just don't get it. IF your "free" product is good enough, it WILL STAND ON IT'S own and sell itself. You don't have to turn your AntiVirus program into a SPAM FROM HELL portal.
I am using AVG for some years. I was always satisfied with the application and recommended it to my friends. It has always been a good product, with elaborated user interface, simple and comfortable to use, there never has been any trouble neither with the usage of AVG Free Antivirus, nor with its results.
I regret to inform, that now I am about to change my mind, because of irrigating pop ups, which started to show up some time ago. Usually I get two or three pop ups per day. They are large enough to be disturbing and unfortunately do not hide automatically, forcing me to distract from what I am doing and close them by clicking "No, thanks". (Which is a bit ironical, actually, since at such moments I am far from being grateful.)
I seached a way to disable them, but came up with nothing. (The variants proposed above do not solve the problem for me.) Also I found no way to decline that suggestion, despite of the fact that I am not interested in the target product.
I find the new "business campain", as AVG employees refer to it, strange and confusing. In my opinion, it has caused a drop in quality of the product. Being a user, I can say 100% sure, that necessity to see tons of those notifications would not make me any closer to the desicion to buy a feature that I have no need in. It would rather one day make me reject the product as a whole and search for alternatives.
I hope that the marketing team would realize these inconviniences they bring to their loyal users and AVG would become again a nice product to use and to recommend.

1. If the product is marketed as free - then it should be free. We are not going to pay for it. Charge the money - and be done with it. Us consumers will then decide what to do next.
2. If the installer package did not warn me that I will have to handle the pop-up annoyance after every single restart, then I should not have to face that popup. The pop-up is misleading, it is intrusive, it is malware and uses a typical scaring tactics - it simply should not be there because I did not agree to see it after every reboot. It started to appear after an automated update – I did not agree to it explicitly by no means!
3. Because it is there, and it should not be there and it can not be stopped, I will wait for exactly one week for AVG to stop this criminal behaviour, before I report this to ACCC.
I've been using AVG for 15 years and am shopping for the product I will be replacing it with. Adware has no place in my computer, regardless of whether it's the AVG Free or Paid versions.

I am glad I came across this feed, I too have AVG Free Adition on 2 of my computers, 1 of which is my Media Centre, and AVG has this popup which comes up almost every few hours interrupting my Movies. It is starting to piss me off, so what did I do, I contacted the head of Microsoft department and filed a complaint because I disabled ALL NOTIFICATIONS within the AVG Software and also disabled ALL notifications through the Microsoft Action Centre, which should hide ALL Notifications from AVG, but AVG have by-passed this somehow and have violated Microsoft Terms and Conditions and will get a nice letter from their legal team in the comming days/weeks advising them to change their script and remove this notification or they will be persuing legal action against AVG. Kind Regards! Better pass up to your developers ASAP to redo their sneaky little coding of their popup string that by-passes ALL Microsoft Notification Disabling Services!!!
AVG has been the best free antivirus for years. I can't even remember when I started using it. Now the program has gone down a dark path, as it violates the rights of thousands of users. The fact that after more than 6 months nothing has changed, makes me wonder if they really care. In addition, the stupid comments of the Indian customer service, that probably never used the program, annoys me enormously.
I will ask it once more, in the name of all AVG free users: please remove the pop-ups or add an option to completely disable them. I will wait a week and than start uninstalling AVG on all my computers, friends computers etc. I will also contact Microsoft as AVG deceives their previously mentioned Terms And Conditions.
Please let me know whether AVG is actually working on this OR whether we are better off uninstalling the adware completely!

All you need to do is add a keyword filter (if this option is available to you), "campaign.avg.com" to your firewall list. And you're done, no more annoying pop ups ;)

I researched other options and learned there is another free antivirus tool for Windows that actually ranked higher through an independent study of factors. So, my first course of action this morning was to completely uninstall AVG and install a better and less intrusive tool that meets my needs. My quest for a replacement may not be done yet but, at least I am no longer battling those lame popups.
It is a shame that AVG became so aggressive in their marketing pursuits, really. The popups really did have a threatening tone, almost as if I had not configured the software to protect my PCs. I was tricked into activating a trial for something I wouldn't ever need several months ago because the alert said my PC wasn't protected.
You folks at AVG can continue to claim these popups are legitimate marketing campaigns but, darn it, they act move like malware. With no way to opt out of the campaigns, enough is enough. I hope you're happy with the loss of consumers to support.

I used to recommend AVG, but I honestly can't anymore. The ceaseless pop-ups and advertisements are impossibly frustrating and constantly interfere with my daily computer usage. I came here to hope and find a way to turn them off, but apparently AVG's staff has no intention of enabling such an option as the above responses prove. How far this once reputable program has fallen, I suppose.
Needless to say, I will be making no purchases from AVG, will not be using any of their free programming, and will not recommend their products ever again.
How sad your support staff must be, forced to lie through their teeth and see their entire jobs reduced from true "customer support" to "wallet-holder placation".
I have been using AVG Free since it was first released on every PC I have ever owned including recommending it to anyone who ever asked about which Anti-virus software they should go with. Probably would be in the 100s the amount of PCs that use this as a result of my recommendation.
I can't believe after months of negative feedback from customers on this forum nothing has been done about it.

These pop ups kill me. They interfere with other programs I'm running constantly (The Game mode option works like crap), and I average seeing one just about every hour. This is a distraction while I'm working or gaming. These pop ups came out about a version or two back, and have gottten worse with each incarnation of the program.
I just deleted it from my laptop, and decided to explore new AV options. To the people who dislike what many have said, calling them "entitled", "Whiners", etc. I think you need to reflect on why people would get upset about this. Mainly, by installing AVG, you are looking to install a program that keeps other programs off your computer that does exactly what AVG is doing, and spamming you with unwanted.pop-ups. Free or not, By AVG performing such pop-ups, it defeats the purpose of the software.
Regardless, everyone in this thread needs to realize that the AVG reps responding are from a help desk, most likely somewhere in India, and not from their North American or European offices. They don't care, and the second rate, off site help desk proves it. You guys who are unhappy are better off just uninstalling and moving on.

AVG has gone overnight from being my go-to antivirus to adware.
Combine this with unhelpful staff responses(In another thread, a staff member recommended that we ignore the popups, wtf?), and my descision has been sealed to switch to Avira Antivirus, and I suggest everyone else do the same.

Looks like avg hasn't fixed anything. This post has made me absolutely certain that I am ready to kick AVG to the curb. My family has been using AVG, both paid and free versions on our various computers since '06. It's over now, these ads are intrusive and if even paying for the program can't rid of them, why would I want this?
The world of technology works fast. I can't imagine how you guys must be bleeding clients right now seeing as you have obviously taken zero steps to fix the ads in the past 8 months.

I deleted the folders to stop the pop ups which were atrocious, but am now actively looking for a better solution. I've used AVG for years and years and always recommended them. Definitely not now. Adware is NOT the answer. The fact I'm reading PAID customers get the same ads is just downright insulting. WOW. Way to screw up your reputation and company image guys. You have some bad leadership right now.
I understand that I'm using the free version, but you are forcing more ads down my throat than most malware you are trying to protect me from.
It's a shame AVG has come to this.
I'm getting pop up adverts on all computers including my home computer while playing games, which the pop up advert minimises the game i'm playing.
Yes I have the AVG advisor notifications box unchecked and the game mode enabled and it is still happening.
Judging by the auto bot responses in this thread in reply to many other users with the same problem, it is clear that AVG is no longer a internet security program. It is now adware. I paid for AVG to prevent pop up adverts. I should be able disable them within the paid version.
I can see by this thread that this problem has been going on for months so clearly, you will do nothing to prevent AVG internet security from being adware.
Your crappy adware is being uninstalled and replaced with a product from a company that removes and prevents unwanted pop up adverts.

I am actually an account manager for a VAR (Value Added Reseller) and I sell AVG business but now I'm positioning Kaspersky or TrendMicro to my clients. I am also uninstalling AVG and all my friends who are complaining about the pop-ups and to who I've recommended AVG to over the last ten years are also going to uninstall AVG and follow my next recommendations. Goodbye AVG.
To help others molested by the spamming, I have few suggestions with screen-captures.
1. To stop spamming on all PC's / laptops connecting to a router which settings you can access (e.g. your home router), go to the WebServer of the router, Block Sites, and enter: campaign.avg.com
2. To stop the illegal spamming outside your home, if for example you take the laptop to UNI and use their hotspot for internet access, go to: C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc\hosts.txt and enter: 127.0.0.1 campaign.avg.com .Make sure that you have administrator rights to modify this hosts.txt file.
Hope this helps. This will stop all iligal spamming by AVG. Hopefully ACCC will do something about this as well...

I'm seeing at least 2 or 3 popups every single day now. The worst thing about this is that when you dismiss an ad, it just comes back later. If I'm not interested, then I'm not going to change my mind a day later.
If this doesn't change within the next ~10 days or so, I'm going to install another AV.

It is really annoying and actually I use just as much as I can of the program, as turning on any of the options else would cause conflicts with the rest of my system.
I was annoyed by the pop-ups, but I'm even more annoyed now by the staffs responds.
I know that's now common, but I refuse to put up with this.
I'm already using other products and AVG would be no longer recommended.
They really don't care about a bunch of people whining about the Free Version support and how awful it is to get popups. After shares are bought back, problems will be fixed. Until then good luck.

I don't think that AVG are being very smart. There are many folks such as myself who add AVG to clients PCs - often these clients do accept an upgrade to the paid for version when renewal is required. Now in all honesty I just cant put this c**p on clients PCs any more as it damages my reputation too.
One has to wonder sometimes how smart the guys are on the other end of this - suspect techies in total isolation. Not unique to AVG, some of MS ideas on Win 1o0 are pretty crazy too.
As I have just paid my subscription, I will continue with AVG until it is time to renew. In the meantime, it seems I can stop the popups in AVG Internet Security by blocking avgui.exe in AVG's own firewall!
AVG Panel --> Firewall --> Settings --> Advanced Settings --> Applications
Look for 'AVG User Interface', which is AVGUI.EXE
Select this and edit it to change settings to Block
This seems to work so far, but the appearance of AVG's promotional popups appears to be random. If it is a solution, one might ask why AVG support has not passed this on to users.

AVG has in my view completed its transition from antui-virus software to just plain a virus. A software that spits out unwanted text literally every three minutes, is malware, a virus.
Goddbye for good, I am also uninstalling on mobile where I paid for it, I cannot in good conscience support a company that behaves like this.
Campaign through my registered email address if you must, I actually read those. Don't do it within your own product without leaving your customer an option to turn it off!
it's bad practice - no matter who's telling you different (looking at you marketing/sales team).
Litmus test: how many of your own employees refuse to use your own product for the same reason; might want to check on that ;)
Lost customers = lost revenue = lost jobs = company out of business.
I've really had it with this pervasive software industry mentality. There are plenty of options out there for customers and you are simply driving them away. Choose to stop the madness now and instead become the torch bearer for better business practice and customer satisfaction!

Why would I post a screenshot? That has been done many times on this thread by other unhappy client / free users. This ad pop up campain is not a news flash. It was likely dreamed up by AVG marketing dept. Approved by the board and developed by your tech dept. You know what we are talking about. Screenshot will not solve this this problem, specially if it is true that an AVG restores folders people are trying to delete to stop this crap.
I found an answer through some easy googling that seems to have worked...there are three folders in the AVG folder in Program Files that you need to delete, but you have to disable avg first...
1. Disable AVG self protection:
Right click the AVG icon in the taskbar (near the clock)
Select to Temporarily Disable AVG Protection
Agree the default timeout - usually 10 minutes?
2. Open My Computer or Windows Explorer and Navigate to:
C:\Program Files\AVG\AVG201x\ ...... for 32bit systems (201x means 2013 or 2014)
C:\Program Files (x86)\AVG\AVG201x\ for 64bit systems
3. Delete the following three folders: Awacs, Banners, Tuneup
Do not delete anything else you see inside the AVG201x folder.
If you accidentally delete anything else go to the recycle bin and restore it.
Note: If you have already paid for the Tuneup addon then keep this folder
4. Close the My Computer/Explorer window
5. Enable AVG self protection:
Right click the AVG icon in the taskbar (near the clock)
Select to Enable AVG Protection - takes 20 seconds or so to fully activate.

Also we have removed AVG from our machines and switched to a different Anti Virus program
We advise everyone to do the same since this is just utterly ridiculous.
And their single-minded copy & paste response to post a screenshot at any report you ever send to AVG, even if all the information they need is clearly communicated, spells that big business has moved offshore to some small place where they don't understand english very well.
It's doom and gloom for AVG I think.
It has now been 9 months, and still no change. Obviously your main goal is to make money (which is very resonable), rather that keeping AVG (esp. Free) users happy - what do you take us for?! don't treat us like we're complete idiots.
However, making money usually goes hand in hand with customer satisfaction, so I stuggle to follow your logic. It makes me sad that, what used to be a good, simple, user friendly piece of software, has become an unbearable piece of useless adware.

I actually considered PURCHASING a website blocker to PREVENT AVG access to campaign.avg.com (2.20.27.2) so that I could block the popup.
I can understand having ads in the GUI but to have a popup that is more pervasive than malware from pron sites...really guys.
I created this user account with the sole purpose of telling AVG to piss off.
They claim that these ads are "legitimate"! What on earth is legitimate about those unsolicited pop-ups? I'll start an anti-AVG campaign soon and I'll keep you updated on where to post.

It doesn't matter which process it was. What matters is that AVG is not only interferring with games but also apps used in day to day business activities. So for me it has become a liability and too risky to leave on a business machine. I'll be joining the flock and trying something else.

First of all if an company in India did buy AVG then it is doomed. Their exploits and thinking have eroded all common considerations of the customer base because they just have adopted shot sighted "business plan" that as usual will kill anything to make a quick turn around off of it.
I've been installing AVG in client's computers for at least 10 years and this is coming to the point where I have to change products. This is so needless. So inconsiderate and so typical of what you see today, companies commiting suicide because crazy business concepts get in the way of a good product.
So after months of constant pop ups asking me to upgrade my AVG package came a week of rest...
Then every day for the past week I have been asked "Would you like to upgrade your experience" and every day I have said no.
Today I was asked again by AVG would you like to upgrade, this time I said yes.
I uninstalled AVG and installed Avira.
Problem solved.
These latest changes, both as a corporation and as a software product, concerning the pop-ups, indicate how you'v lost direction as a company. Regardless of whether the ads are for self-promotion or promotion of 3rd party software, IT IS STILL ADWARE. This is a policy that is going to make you lose millions of users if course is not changed.
Another point. Having your staff post response after response which repeats the words "regret", "apologize", "sorry" and "understand" in the first couple sentences, while at the same time NOTHING is being done to correct the issue, only demonstrates that your CSR (Customer Service Rep.) training is being followed to the letter but by doing so you are turning people off.
In fact, the ONLY person from AVG technologies who didn't respond with one of the previous keywords was "Jan", whom I'll presume is at a management level and actually has the authority to think, unlike the army of Indian minions who are programmed to tick the box for each e-mail.
Like many of the other people who have commented here, I also only created my account so that I could express my displeasure with the new corporate policies and announcing that I am UNINSTALLING AVG and moving on to a competitor's product.

I too am in the IT industry and for many MANY years have recommended AVG Free to hundreds of people. It is very sad that AVG has lost its way and now continually interrupts the user with pop-up advertising.
Years ago there were few if any alternatives and AVG may have got away with annoying their users like this, this is not the case now though.
I almost never sign up to make posts like this, but given my history with AVG I signed up to give feedback and say good-bye. AVG needs to realise that for every customer saying they are leaving there will be 1000+ customers who just leave without saying "good-bye".
I fear that if AVG does not reassess their ways they will spiral out of existence.

How do you not realize that designing a program to do percisely what it's supposed to prevent will make people turn away from it, entirely? These pop ups appear even when you are using full-screen application - for example a video game.
In the middle of intense fight, suddenly the game closes (minimizes) just because AVG decided to spam you in this moment.
I'm very sorry AVG, but you are losing faithful customers this way.

You should be embarressed for treating people, who have stuck by you for years and promoted your product via word of mouth, in the way you have on this thread. You are basically saying the free version is now adware and to remove the ads you must pay. The popups are the tip of the iceberg, this policy of pushing 'other products' has been in place for several years now despite customer complaints, so unless there is a change of management at AVG i do not see any change in sight. Like others, AVG have had fair warning, i'm not renewing my licence either.
Oh well, as long as they are "sorry for the inconvenience caused" and are willing to continue graciously accepting screenshots from their frustrated users, all is good. After all, the constant unwanted pop-ups are all part of the marketing plan that ultimately funds the free version that YOU are currently enjoying. So just be grateful that AVG has given you the privilege of being one of their customers.

I understand that when I get "Free" AVG there will be something for you to make money off of... it's important for you to put forth those offers... Its important for your company to get paid.

AVG having been 'esculating' this issue since last year looking through the thread but it's clear nothing is going to be done about it and word-of-mouth is the best and worst publicity.

These ads keep popping up while doing a power point preseintation at a company conference.
These ads can't be disabled, and interrupt our work 10-20-50 times EACH DAY.
I run multiply AV programs on different computers for testing, AVG and its pop ups are also starting to annoy me.
Also note a lot of my customers who get the free version with an expensive repair job (to help keep their costs down), are told about the pros and cons of free V paid and often update to the paid version.
I can not in good conscience keep recommending AVG and other now recommend AVIRA and AD-Aware Antivirus.
Interesting to note that some of AVG extras get picked up when running adware and junkware removal programs!

It is an absolute disgrace that AVG have sunk down to the mud by spamming it's customers.
It is not relevant that the customer have downloaded the free version of AVG. It does not at all entitle AVG to spam customer on a daily basis.The customers that have downloaded and installed the free version did it for exactly that reason. It is FREE.....
I do understand that AVG wish to get more paid customers, and if they did one or two of these popups, and on these gave the option to "not show this again", then this would be acceptable.
Not respecting customers choice, and then spamming customers daily and some times even several times each days is not going to get AVG more paid customers.
Such lack of respect for peoples privacy is actually making me seriously question if AVG is the right SW to protect my privacy at all???
Someone within AVG desperately need to take the spamming tools away from the kids in the marketing department ASAP, or they will be wiped of my recommend list at least.
......And, by the way. The same goes for the SW upgrade procedure.......
It is just as much disgrace that AVG here as well by default "fool" people using AVG free to go for a trial of the pro version, and then start spamming people after a short while stating that their license has expired.

Like many other people I’ve been using AVG for years, but no more. I’ve had enough.
Now Here in the UK we have harassment laws. I found this info which I think AVG should be aware of.
Harassment is both a criminal offence and a civil action under the Protection from Harassment Act 1997. The offence of harassment extends to any form of persistent conduct which causes another alarm or distress. Therefore the range of behaviour that is capable of constituting an offence under the Act is potentially very wide.
So there we have it. All it will take is for someone to make a complaint to the police & they will have to act on it.
That’s something to think about.
What is Adware?
Adware refers to the class of malware that presents unwanted advertisement using intrusive and at times dangerous methods.
I am trying out alternative anti-virus because off all these pop ups. They can steal focus from the work I do on my PC causing me to make mistakes if I do not notice right away.
That link is perfect. But some guy named allahu akbar tech support mohammad is going to say something stupid and unsincere about how its being looked at. Until there is proof that it is happening there is no problem assuming that the next admin that responds is going to outright lie.
Finally got fed up with the pop ups. So I used the 'options/advanced options/system tray notifications' suggestion.
Considering that I've had to manually update AVG on a regular basis, rather than it updating when opened or according to a schedule...oh, except for the updates that require me to turn the computer off and on again, those are automatic updates...and that I've been a regular AVG user since about 2003, I'm at the point where I want it to work, like it's always worked or I'm just going elsewhere.
When I say 'I want it to work', that means in the classical sense. Quietly, in the background, without being a resource hog.

The only suggestion worth implementing, given the sheer number of requests above, is for AVG to provide an option that turns your all advertisements off, so they don't interrupt work or games. If it's not fixed by the time of my renewal, I will not renew.
3. Delete the following three folders: Awacs, Banners, Tuneup
the AVG201x folder was no longer there, so I just searched while in the AVG folder for Awacs; Banners; and then Tuneup. they all appeared, and I deleted them...now to reboot and see if it still works...
Well, it took less than a day. Less than a day after disabling the system tray notifications for an advert popup to appear.
So, goodbye AVG. It's been a long run. I'm going to try out Avast, which PC Mag actually rates higher than AVG and Panda, which is rated 3rd overall.
I am sure you are already working around the solution from Charles Boyce. When you do and the unclosable popups return, your product will be uninstalled and (I am guessing I wont be the only one).

AVG changed over the years. Like many others users I'll be moving on too. Anti-virus is meant to stop annoying issues, not be the annoying issue.

It has been approximately a month since removing AVG and installing Avast. Avast has been running very well. But just the other day I was very surprised to see yet another AVG ad pop up. I wondered how that was possible. Was AVG coming back from the dead? No, it turns out that at some point in the last year, an additional AVG program was installed on my PC that I didn't know about. Possibly PC Tuneup, or Zen, or something else. I don't even remember doing it. Maybe AVG did it on its own after I made a clicking error while disabling one of the pesky ads. Anyway, if you're un-installing AVG-AV, you might be wise to check for other AVG products on your system or they too will start producing ads before long.
So that brought me to this thread and to your original post about a year ago, and to the wilderssecurity thread. Thanks for that.
What I have done is to rename the three folders - awacs, banners and Tuneup - which are all in "C:\Program Files\AVG\Av" on my XP machine. I always rename in case I need to rename them back to their original names :) . The usual change that I make to the name is simply to add "WAS " at the beginning.
The only positive comment I would like to make to the AVG guys - apart from the fact that their software does do a good job, of course - is to say "kudos to you for leaving this thread online" as it doesn't take too much effort to find out what to do.
Of course, the pretty "gift" pop up may come back tomorrow... If it does I'll be sure to come back here again!

So, just to add one more voice to this:
AVG, I have very simple rules for software on my system. You may only put forth visual or audio elements while I'm actively using your software, unless I give you specific permission otherwise. Popups or ads outside the context of me actively using your application are not remotely acceptable. Whoever thought this was a good idea should be fired. Displaying ads in this manner makes your software adware, period.
Furthermore it is clearyou have no intention of removing these popups as this thread has been around for 10 months and this is still an issue.
So, if someone manages to post a solution to this latest gift popup before it comes up again, then I suppose laziness will allow me to remain a user. If not, then I'll be joining the list of ex-AVG-users (plus, there will be social media posts).

Also, after uninstalling via the Control Panel (everything starting with AVG), there were still multiple keys in the registry from AVG. I deleted them all like the plague for better or for worse.

No, you are clearly not. If I believe that you believe the nonsense you're spouting, then the fix would have been simple: just add an option in the settings to turn off the ads. I still think the presence of the ads at all is a travestry and a violation of trust, but at least with a toggle, people who find them useful (because they *totally* exist) can leave them on while those of us who don't want them can turn them off.
It's a super-trivial thing to do, especially if you have several months in which to do it.
And yet... it's not done. So I don't even think you believe that bull you said. You know fullwell that most people do not want the popups, but you figure that more people will give you money either for better protection or to make them go away, and if you lose users who aren't paying right now, well, no harm to you, right?
I honestly can't think of another explanation. I can't even imagine how anyone with a mindset other than that allows this idea to go through.
Well, I for one will NEVER give you money, because you have proven that customer satisfaction is not your top priority or even close to it.
So the VERY VERY LEAST you could do is not insult our intelligence and just be honest that you have no intention of fixing the problem.
Because, again, it would have sufficed to add a toggle so that those of us who cared could turn the popups off. You'd likely still have plenty of people too lazy to do so and they'll see your ads and maybe even buy, but you wouldn't have this massive backlash at you because your product turned into adware.
I haven't seen the other popups since I deleted the three directories suggested by Charles Boyce, but I've seen the "A gift for you" popup THREE TIMES IN THE LAST TWO DAYS and that is THREE TIMES TOO MANY.
I have debated now, as I'm writing this, whether to just go and find another anti-virus, or to give you a chance to respond... since I'm writing this, it seems only fair to allow for a response, but you are on your very last chance. If the next response either
- Doesn't arrive by EOD tomorrow.

- Fails to pass the Turing test.

The above paragraph was loaded with sarcasm in case anyone missed it, especially those poor agents that have to do copy/paste response and for whom English is probably not their first language.
So in short, here's what we get.
1) They're sorry, they apologise, many people have complained, they're working on it, post on the broken feedback form so that their team can fix the issue...
2) Follow the steps provided by Charles to disable popups. (I've gone a week without one so far, instead of 3-4 per day)
3) Uninstall AVG and find another fine product out there. Most of them are of at least equal quality based on reviews, and some of them don't even have a campain to force you to fork out money out of your pockets just so that you can get different popups that will ask you to dig in the wallet again. I know that's what I'm doing.
1. Prompt response, check.
2. Include instructions on how to disable popups - FAIL.
3. Pass the Turing test - FAIL.

Understand that you have a lot of users who are EXTREMELY UPSET that you have turned your software into adware, and that all we want(ed) was even just an OPTION to turn those ads off.
Or don't, because it's quite clear that you don't actually care.
You can say "Our main goal is to keep our customers happy." as many times as you want, but actions (and inactions) speak louder than words.
Your complete and utter failure to address this issue for months tells us what your real priorities are. I can't speak for everyone for 100% certain, but I believe that no on on this thread - not a single person - actually believes you when you say this.

I'm going to try Avast.
The only workaround I have found is to block all the IP addresses used by AVG. I then enable one set of IP addresses in order to take any new virus pattern updates. When done, they then get blocked until next update is needed. Looking at my network traffic, I noticed a lot of cases where AVG was creating all kinds of network trafic back to the mothership. It is a pain we have to go to this extent just to use AVG software. The again, I sure do not miss the pop-ups.... :-)

Now, if AVG is making popups that can not be turned off (free edition), then I'm having second thoughts. Maybe I should try some other antivirus, but the problem is that several antivirus programs does not support pre-SSE2 CPUs.

As this is a free version, the pop-up cannot be stopped. However, new option of controlling the frequency of pop-up notifications is integrated with latest version of AVG free. To change the settings click on Options ->Advanced settings ->Appearance ->Set maximum frequency of in-pp offers from AVG and trusted 3rd parties.

I have used AVG as my primary, and in some cases ONLY virus protection for over a decade now. I reciently installed windows 10 as a secondary boot on my Linux desktop and installed my old trusty friend AVG. I have been plagued with the pop-ups since the day I installed the best virus scanner I have used to date. I wanted to find a way to get rid of them, like most people have, and I came across this thread. After reading that in the free version there is ZERO ability to get rid of these pop-ups I feel that there is only one last resort to get rid of this adware.

I my self am a mac user who boots to windows for games (that cant run full screen thanks!) and some apps that cannot run in Mac OS. I can tell you these type of ads would never be allowed by apple and your app would be dropped from the appstore.

And I would like to advise that while AVG was being number one for so much time - and STILL has fairly good antivirus/machine tune-up capabilities - now is going down. Why?
Simple. AVG's advertising policy now proves to be IRRESPONSIBLE, to the point of even harassing customers who PAID for an online and/or store acquired software.
I paid for my TuneUp Utilities 2014, I am happy with it, I DON'T NEED you to try forcing me to upgrade, so STOP this popup IMMEDIATELY!
You should have known better how to really serve your customers, instead of bombarding them with popups, even after they actually BOUGHT a software!...
Again I remind you: I am a PAYING customer who acquired a LEGITIMATE TuneUp Utilities 2014 copy, and I am fully happy with this version, I simply don't need to upgrade; I own NOTHING else labeled AVG, so I request you with a solution to stop the popup tabs on my browser IMMEDIATELY.

I'm another long-time AVG user leaving for good. In due course I will remove it from all the devices in my household (Windows and Android).
I did abandon it when I upgraded to Windows 10, but recently returned having (naively) thought that they had probably given up on the intrusive and annoying adware. I don't care that I use AVG Free and have done so for many years. I DO NOT fall for advertising campaigns. If I turn down an offer, I do NOT expect to see the pop-up again. Ever.
So, in the interests of annoying advertising, would you all care to flood the forum with your alternative, reliable, NON-INTRUSIVE, and free AV choices? And keep doing it daily until AVG begs you to stop.

I am going to add in my thoughts about this debate. Yes, I bought the software -- not because I was HARRASSED CONSTANTLY, but because I wanted to support AVG and was waiting for a fair sale to purchase. However, I don't like all the DAMN POPUPS. Annoying as anything.
Then, I just made a similar commentary on HOW MANY POPUPS YOU GET just when you are SIMPLY SCANNING A FILE. Avg must feel that all I have time to do, is click their close buttons. It has THREE WINDOWS after you right-click in Explorer and scan a file.
Now, isn't that a little much to tell you if file has virus???? I thought it was supposed to do the work, NOT ME. Seems like I am on a CHAIN GANG banging rocks all day, having to keep clicking AVG's POPUPS.
Really?!?!?!? I bought your product with a multi-year license. Now, leave me alone. Monitor for viruses, and quite OPTIMIZING MY COMPUTER (unless I ask) or tell me how to HIDE IT or POSTPONE IT when it popups.
My time is valuable, and I don't want to WASTE IT MONKEYING WITH AVG. That's not how I earn money.

Google for "Clam Antivirus" - it has been the defacto standard for Linux for years and there is a version for Windows 10 x64. it's open source so stick your business campaigns you know where. Bonus is it's much faster than AVG with its multithreaded scanner.

I though the guy who jumped and told us that we are "entitled" ... Pretty sure I'm not "entitled" when I remember using AVG "free" because it was a superior product and it wasn't full of ads and gimmicks like this.... that was the other guys, that's why we used AVG and not the other ones.
Now, I certainly understand advertising and that running a company isn't free, etc.
I returned to AVG because it was a great product (and, I'm sure, still is), I was considering paying for some "premium" features, subscriptions or whatever, but I've quickly become so fed up with all the gimmicks (that I HATED in other products, that run scans and report a large number of errors …. then try to scare you into buying something with the idea that if you don't spend the money your computer could have "serious issues" that will "slow" it down or cause some sort of "failure").
I'm seriously considering doing away with AVG. (I don't play games on my computer at this time, but you can bet that if AVG popped up with some B.S. from their now built-in spam-ware and disrupted something I was in the middle of (you know.... Something I actually bought my computer for...) AVG would have been GONE off all my devices already.
I even have an actual paid version on Android and it seems that they've changed the model to subscription or something because now I'm getting messages within the app telling me that my "Pro Version" is expiring or something. (Trying to get me to pay again, I guess!)
It's sad, those of us that have been a long time loyal users that may actually pay a little something at some point (just because we appreciated a great product) are being chased off by this silly respected AVG becoming lowly Adware thing.
Not sure this is such a great move on AVG's part, but it may be very lucrative for them and it won't be the first time that principles and quality have been sold out for the moolah! (as P.T. Barnum is attributed to have said, a sucker is born every minute!)

Sadly, over the last few months, instead of being her guardian, AVG software has become a source of frustration, confusion and worry for her. The constant pop-ups, dire warnings and splash pages are now so bad she thinks she has viruses and spamware on her PC ! Despite all my efforts, I've been unable to remove a "trial version expired" spalsh page for the last 2 weeks and have no means of controlling the pop-ups.
I understand AVG need to make money through upsales and paid subscriptions, but their sale techniques are overly aggressive and appear designed to prey on the unsuspecting and vulnerable. In my elderly mother's case, it is little different to unsolicited phone calls and predatory scammers looking to extract money for services she does not need. Looks like I need to drop AVG and find a better online guardian for her, which is a pity.

Do you monitor the number of times your freeware closes another program to spam us? Do you monitor how many times your ads get closed and how fast? Do you monitor the number of people who uninstall your products with in minutes of a popup being generated? Have you monitored how often people have had this issue and your staff have given the same bullshit answer?
I have tried many of your fixes including but not limited to: restarting pc, reinstalling freeware, updating, changing settings, etc..
I continue to get pop ups ever 10 minutes from your program. I've considered upgrading in the past, but after looking at this thread, I think I'll save my money and just switch Anti-Virus protections to a company that actually cares about its freeware clients.

Funny to read other AVG Free users so enraged at all this. "How dare you give me something for free (maybe, like me, for 10 years or more) and now make me have to look for something else free because I'm too cheap to spend money."

Also, it's not an advisor notification problem because it's not a notification, it's an in-app offer and can't be switched off, only the frequency changed - which, of course, doesn't work either.

Like all of the people commenting here, I've become thoroughly sick of the incessant pop-ups in recent versions of your product. So much so that I've not only stopped recommending it, I actually advise people to avoid it.
I first started using AVG on my home PC in the late 1990s and was so impressed with it that I persuaded my employer, a national IT support company and system integrator, to use it instead of our existing Computer Associates product. The company, in turn, was so impressed with it that they added it to their portfolio and became an AVG reseller.
Your oft-stated comment "Our goal is to keep our customers happy" is patently untrue because you've done absolutely nothing about stopping the unwanted, intrusive pop-ups about which you're receiving so many complaints. Avast/AVG seem to have a counter-productive marketing policy, because you persist in claiming that they are "legitimate business campaigns" despite the fact that they seem to be causing you to lose customers, including resellers, in droves.
I think that lots of your users are like me, in that if we want products, from you or anyone else, (AAAARRRRGGGGHHHH!!!!! I've just been prevented from typing because of your "Black Friday" pop-up) we're intelligent enough to look for them ourselves, as and when we want them.
I've had enough. You can now add me (and any future customers that I might have advised to use AVG) to the list of non-AVG users. I'm sure your competitors will be more than happy about the new customers you're sending to them.

Such software has been acquired by AVG about two years ago. Unfortunatelly, those famous utilities has been turned into adware by an automatic update. Now it starts my browser on their own behalf and open pages inside of it to show me advertising pages.
I consider aggressive and unacceptable appropach from AVG to turn a former paid software into adware. It may be acceptable in free/trial product, but not in paid version.
So sorry, despite I buyed Tune-Up licenses several times, no further business of any kind will occur with AVG.
There are other vendors offering simmilar products.
Just my money has been wasted a lot, but it's a business. It's my fault I considered AVG trusted in the past, so I got I deserved.

I too am completely fed up with this. AVG clearly have no interest in resolving this issue; obviously the revenue from the advertising outweighs any concerns regarding customer satisfaction which is a real shame. Every response starts with "We apologize if an AVG product did not meet your expectations. Our main goal is to keep our customers happy." - clearly this is utter bollocks. I started with Norton / Symantec back in the 90's and when that became bloatware I moved over to AVG and have been a loyal customer for many, many years.
So, my question to the community is which anti-virus software do you recommend as an alernative to take us back to the good days?

I imagine Ranjani and co must wince each time this page bings. I'm equally having a terrible time with this AVG pop-up nonesense. I bought the one year version last year sometime, and it wouldn't stop harassing me for the entirety of that one-year period. Now that it has expired, the popups are in overdrive. This would not normally be much of a problem; I can always go back to Norton, and in fact, I think I may.
But looking at the utter lack of regard to the customer base, as evinced on this webpage, really gets me upset, and makes me want to go angrily to my keyboard. Why do you keep apologizing when you obviously aren't fixing the problem? Further, you keep assuring us that you guys will deliver the complains to the "concerned department," which, after much repetition, makes me believe that AVG has an actual corporate branch called "The Concerned Department." This leads me to believe that the other departments can be called the "Unconcerned Departments."
Secondly, the "Legitimate Business Campaign" excuse used earlier must have been a PR error. That phrase, and its accompanying context, is the equivalent of saying, "we don't care about your complaint; we just want money." I can guarantee you that is not the way of going about it.
Lastly, someone on your squad is extremely patronizing. Press the X button on the upper right-hand corner of the box? Seriously? Why bother even answering this page if you clearly don't want to put in either the effort or the honesty.
I sincerely hope somebody on that apathetic team of business campaigners understands that this webpage can become viral at any moment, and it won't be just a handful of users clicking No Thanks.

Reading through the above and seeing the uncaring formulaic responses from AVG Mods - they've been saying "we will escalate your concern" for over a year, now, and have admitted that the pop-ups don't go away when you upgrade to the paid version due to marketing policy. Spare us all from bag-biting marketroids!

I have a paid version of AVG Internet Security but in the last year or so I have been getting periodic pop-up messages in the bottom right corner of the screen. Today's message told me that my internet activity could be seen by others, offering me a button to "hide my activity" or some such thing. At first I thought this was a reminder to turn on an option in my existing AVG installation, but in looking into it more carefully this appears to be another pop-up advertisement for a different AVG product. It's not the first such pop-up like this. If I was using the free version of AVG then pop-ups like this would be expected, but in the PAID version THESE ADVERTISEMENTS ARE NOT ACCEPTABLE. One of the reasons I pay you is so that I can be free of this kind of annoying advertising. I like AVG Internet Security in general, and in paying you for it I expect you to respect me in turn - these advertisements in a paid version are, to the contrary, quite disrespectful of me as a paying customer. At present I have a 3-computer licence, but if the adverisememnts persist for too much longer then I will seriously consider not renewing my subscription when it comes due, and instead weigh up moving to anther company's internet security product. If the advertisements are intended to entice me to buy another product then someone at AVG has seriously miscalculated; for PAYING customers the advertisements are an incentive to dump AVG rather than buy more product from AVG. Basically it's AVG's call; keep PAYING customers happy and they'll stay with the product, or annoy and irritate those customers and they'll leave AVG along with their money.

I've deleted AVG 6 months ago, and installed 360 Total Security. It's FREE, and in 6 months, NO POPUPs at all. Zero popups.
I'm not affiliated with 360 Total Security, I've just googled for AV alternatives, and found it. My last 6 months have been spam and popup free. :)
AVG should be aware that a with their intent of these popups can be considered malware/spam-ware and could cause a class action lawsuit against the company and a hefty fine.
Now if I were the CEO of AVG, I would really think about this and remove the ads, popups that AVG is advertising from their FREE and PAID Antivirus to avoid a class action lawsuit.

I've had the very same problems. At one time, AVG was a great piece of software. It detected malware and viruses, easily removed them, was on par with McAffee, and wasn't an annoying piece of adware that constantly implored you to upgrade. But I found an excellent solution to this problem.
I installed Avira and got rid of AVG.
Just to add fuel to the fire, I thought I'd let you know that I too used to advise friends and family on the great AVG but since the popups started I couldn't face the adware / spam approach and uninstalled. This was quite some time ago but I stumbled across this thread and it seemed only right to add my voice to the many so the message is clear.
Saying that, thank you for the many years you provided this software *really* for free as I'm sure you saved me from a digital fate worse than death more than once.
I'm very unlikely to consider purchasing what many others are providing for free so you might want to ignore the next bit but if you are still with me, can I suggest you allow users who actually pay for your software the ability to opt out of marketing placement advertising. That part of the whole issue seemed the worst of all!

So this afternoon I was thinking about switching to another free AV program. I was Googling alternatives, though I've used and rejected many of them in the past, when an idea hit me. Malwarebytes 3.0 Premium (No, this isn't a plug for MBAM). I logged into Malwarebytes, checked my account and there was the solution. I'd forgotten that I have not one, but two lifetime licenses. Good-bye AVG.
And it really is too bad because over the years I really have liked AVG. And I don't mind a company that advertises. But this in my face barage of pop ups was just too much.
But that really wasn't the last straw. The last straw was the sacarin "We understand your concern", "We do understand how difficult this is for you", "I profusely apologize for the inconvenience caused" canned non-responses by the AVG Help Desk personnel. I believe that it's safe to assume that English is not their their primary language and they have no idea just how insulting those chosen words are. Though the phrases may be proper in another culture's language, that dog transliterated into English does not hunt. Or maybe they do understand and, like the spam, do it to be "politely" annoying.
Now the company is doing well and I just paid for an unlimited version and now I am being plagued with pop ups that I never had with the free version.
I have a perfectly adequate firewall solution covering the network; I don't need an AVG firewall on every PC thanks very much, so why do I get constant red "warning" screens?

I am sorry to hear that. This issue could have caused if the old traces of AVG was not removed properly and that must have slowed down the computer performance. If he used AVG remover to uninstall AVG, then all the old traces must have got removed and the reinstall should not have slowed down the computer performance. eg. Password protection should be part of the privacy/firewall offered in Ultimate.

You can NOT switch off these popup adverts, I repeat can NOT switch off.
If AVG tell you otherwise, they are liars, the "zero" second popup feature in 2017 paid software is bypassed and AVG intentionally do this.

I understand your concern. We have new feature added to stop the campaign pop-ups in the latest version of AVG. Please check if you have updated to the AVG version 17.7. If it is, please follow the below steps to stop AVG pop-ups.

The frequency of Pop-Ups can be controlled directly from the application or can even be Turned Off. Please open AVG Internet Security, click on Menu>Settings. BUT my biggest problem was uninstalling "AVG pc tuneup 2015". When I chose "uninstall" a "confirmation" window appeard saying the usual "are you sure you want to uninstal"(except it was whining about how I'm making a big mistake), and when I clicked yes... it didn't work... literally I couldn't press "yes". I could press "no", in which case it closed the window, but the "yes" button didn't work at all, which is just shitty. SO I googled until I realized that turning off the internet worked.
So I did, and FINALLY the "yes" button could acutally be pressed. But when the uninstallation process started, it connected to my wifi by force, and I thought it was to take me to a feedback page or someshit but NO, it just started it for no apparent reason. Kinda creepy don't you think? So I turned it off again and F I N A L L Y that useless program was uninstalled! Now hopefully there's no spyware lingering. So, to clarify for everyone:
1. Go to Control panel>Uninstal a program
2. Find the program you're looking for
3. Turn off your internet/router/disconnect(just get offline completely)
4. right klick on the program and chose "uninstall"
5. click "yes"
6. Turn your internet again if it connected like the creepy piece of shit it is.
7. Feel the freedom, because the exorcism has finally been completed, you're free now.
AVG has become malware, I don't recomend it to anyone, ever, boycot this shit.
Oh! And you don't have to respond with your useless "We're sorry to informe you blah blah blah" shtick because I won't be coming here again.

I know you need to put ads up, but this often and in such annying fashion (sorry, AVG pop up just appered) is just bad. You dont need that many ads, like you dont need ten of the same ad on a website. You are just as likely to click on an ad if there was one of them or 10 of the same ad. Its also anoying how you do the ads. Pop ups are just bad and infuriating, for any thing you might do on a computer. Its also ironic, since thats what AVG does- Remove Pop-ups. I get twice as many pop ups with avg... lol. My question is, why cant you do ads diffently, in a way tha dosent defeat the point of using your product and still lets you advertise? If i see ads whenever i open AVG, I, and a lot of people, would be fine with that

I recommended and installed AVG PAID VERSION on many computers a few years ago. And even now I am getting requests why they get a popup that their computer seems to be slow, or that they are not fully protected and had to install another AVG product etc.
Mostly they do this because they think the programs are addons or even worse, they click on every banner they see.
So, no customers that rely on them, but customers that should be protected by NOT giving them banners.
Therefor, when I am in their neighbourhood, I uninstall AVG, remove their subscription and install a competitor which has their customers in view in stead of their wallet.
AVG will never ever change this, because they are selling years subscription and since there are millions of potential customers they won't have to be friendly for their current customers.
It would be great when sites that sum up the best anti virus also include customer satisfaction. That way AVG would drop significantly and they might be forced to take actions accordingly.
Please accept my apologies with regards to the AVG software not living up to your expectations. In the recent version, you can turn off the campaign popups notifications permanently. To do that, please open AVG Internet Security > Menu > Settings > General > Popup > Uncheck "show popup offers for other AVG products" > click ok and restart AVG program to check the staus.
You should not receive ads for other AVG products after applying the above mentioned settings. We'd like to take this as your valuable feedback about making this settings default and pass it up to concern team.

In the latest version, You have this option under "Menu->Settings->General->Privacy".

None of the answers seem to help and it is now May 2020!
I started getting copious amounts of pop-ups (in fact i get more pop-ups and spam from AVG and AVASt than any adware i've ever had in the old days.
So, also, when i do get these numerousd and irritating pop-ups that are blank white windows, and go to task tray thing (Win10) and click AVG incase it actually has anything useful to say (FOR A CHANGE) it won't even load up and show me. even though there has been a little exclaimation mark on there for days)
And if i go to Start and click AVG from there? NOTHING! ABSOLUTELY NOTHING!
It's been going on for weeks.
I am on the free version. And definately have found nothing to convince me i need premium version (same with Avast now too.. they spam even MORE than AVG do.. whiuch is saying something)
