exception/error code 0xc000001d running Ultimate installer

I am trying to install AVG Ultimate to a Windows XP (professional, w/SP3) that had AVG 2013 installed (license expired).  When I try to run the downloaded installer (avg_gsr_stb_all_ltst_xx.exe where xx is 95, 106 or 144), I get a Windows error message that says it has encountered an error and needs to close.

I get a similar error message and the same exception code when I go thru the AVG support process and trying to run the remote support application (support-logmeinrescue.exe).

Bill, Try removing AVG by downloading & using the 32 or 64bit 2015 Remover (http://www.avg.com/ww-en/utilities) [Scroll Down], whichever suits your system. If you're not sure about 32 or 64 bit on your system have a look @ this link (http://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/827218).

First I'm not sure how 2015 Remover is related to my problem as the problem is unable to run the 2015 Ultimate installer, but I downloaded the 32bit version of the remover and ran it.  After it finished shortly after the computer rebooted, I ran the AVG 2015 Ultimate installer again and still get the same error message (picture below).

Hello William. Thank you for providing the screenshot of the error and I am sorry once again to hear about the inconvenience caused. I would request you to boot your PC to safe mode ( http://avgread.me/1JwmD6g ) and try to run the remote control applet to get connected to our remote support. Please contact us back should you need any further assistance. Thank you.

OK I tried both Safe Mode with Networking and plain Safe Mode - the remote control/support applet still quits with the similar error message as before.
